‘The Acolyte’ Reportedly Targeting June 5 Release, Michael Abels To Score

Just a couple of weeks after reporting on a summer release window for Leslye Headland’s The Acolyte, Collider is back with an update. According to them, Lucasfilm/Disney has set an internal date for the show to come out on Disney Plus: June 5.

Disney reps did not confirm nor deny the date to Collider, which makes sense, as they will be holding this one as close to the vest as possible until they officially announce it, marking the beginning of the promotional push. Marketing windows for Star Wars shows typically are in the three-month range, so we’re getting awfully close to that threshold. The Acolyte seems to be one they will not be taking any chances on, given how unknown it is among the general public, so the release of the first trailer could be imminent. (Insider Daniel Richtman said on his Patreon page that a trailer is ready, as is one for Skeleton Crew — though that doesn’t mean anything; trailers aren’t released when they’re ready, but when the publicity departments decide it’s best to drop them.)

In addition, Collider is hearing that Michael Abels, of Nope fame, is on board as the main composer of the series. Abels is a frequent collaborator of Jordan Peele but hasn’t worked with Headland before. Recent TV work includes Max’s Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and the miniseries Alien v. Farrow. As a fun fact, he worked on 2022’s Breaking, which starred John Boyega.

The Acolyte is set 100 years before The Phantom Menace, and will follow Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae’s characters as they venture into a galaxy of mysteries and darkness. It will be the first Star Wars series to focus on the villains. Here is the official synopsis:

Star Wars: The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”

Leslye Headland is the showrunner, executive producer, and one of the directors of The Acolyte. The story is likely to feature mostly all-new characters, with the exception of publishing fan-favorite Vernestra Rwoh, played by Rebecca Henderson (the extent of her role is still unknown). In addition to Stenberg and Jung-jae, the cast includes Jodie Turner-Smith, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman, Dafne Keen, Manny Jacinto, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joonas Suotamo.
