The Nameless and Other High Republic Villains Showcased in New Concept Art

In a new feature article published on StarWars.com, concept art was shown of the High Republic’s monstrous creatures, The Nameless, and of the villainous scientists experimenting on them. The High Republic publishing initiative is currently in its final phase, with the recent release of The Eye of Darkness marking the beginning of Phase III.

The Nameless are animalistic creatures that feed on Force-sensitive individuals. The High Republic’s main villain, Marchion Ro, has unleashed The Nameless as a way to counteract and defend against the Jedi. But for Phase III of the High Republic, Marchion Ro and his leaders tinker with and utilize The Nameless to a more terrifying degree.

As explained by Michael Siglain, the creative director behind Lucasfilm Publishing, the character Baron Boolan leads those experiments. It leads to The Nameless looking even more vicious and volatile:

“Marchion Ro is looking to further weaponize the Nameless against the Jedi, and has called upon scientist Baron Boolan for assistance. To say that the Baron’s experiments are horrific would be an understatement. Baron Boolan could teach Baron Frankenstein a thing or two.”

Cavan Scott, author of the mainline Star Wars: The High Republic Marvel comic series, also emphasizes the more grotesque nature of Baron Boolan and his experiments. Boolan’s work is what leads to The Nameless receiving cybernetic enhancements:

“Boolan has also been experimenting on the Nameless themselves, the corridors of his various secret laboratories lined with their preserved remains. Only two of these experiments have borne fruit, creating Boolan’s personal guard-Nameless, both of which have received numerous cybernetic ‘upgrades.’”

Siglain also provided some details on Baron Boolan’s assistants, named Reek and Niv Drendow Apruk. Siglain promises that readers will learn more about these characters in future publications:

“Every scientist needs help, and Boolan is no different. Reek is his Ewok-sized, rodent-like assistant whom we’ll meet in future issues of The High Republic from Marvel. Niv Drendow Apruk is Boolan’s protégé. Niv Drendow is cold and calculating and is working on his own experiments to impress the Baron. We’ll meet him in Escape from Valo from Disney Lucasfilm Press.”

Star Wars The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness is out now. In our review of The Eye of Darkness, our very own Nate Manning scored it an 8/10, calling it “a sprawling and intimate beginning of the end.”
