Exclusive: Greedo Takes Center Stage in Preview of ‘Hyperspace Stories’ #6
Issue #6 of Hyperspace Stories is set to release on July 26, featuring an intriguing backstory to everybody’s favourite(?) infamous bounty hunter, Greedo.
Star Wars News Net has an exclusive preview of the upcoming story, which is described to follow the young Rodian in his early days working for Jabba the Hutt. When a huge deal falls over, Jabba’s then-romantic companion puts Greedo in harm’s way. Here is the synopsis from DarkHorse.com:
Long before his infamous run-in with Han Solo, Greedo was a rookie crook trying to rise through the ranks of Jabba the Hutt’s gangster organization. But his young ambitions are quickly derailed when a big deal goes south, and Greedo is set up to take the fall by Jabba’s latest romantic companion. Can Greedo make it out alive, or will he find himself the latest offering to Jabba’s pet Rancor!
At a first glance, the artwork is vibrant and enigmatic, almost appearing to leap right off the page. Hyperspace Stories #6 is written by Cecil Castellucci, with art by Eduardo Mello. Check out a closer look at the covers and preview pages below.
The visual depiction of Greedo lends itself to a sympathetic reception of the character, and it seems the reader will find themselves rooting for the rather sweet and spindly-looking Rodian as we are allowed access to his interior dialogue. He seems to be facing a lot of pressure as he enters Jabba’s Palace.
Eager to make a good impression upon the mighty crime lord, Greedo approaches to offer a gift. The patrons of the palace appear to be fawning over something called the Sunburst Gem. They mistake Greedo’s forthright approach for an attempt on Jabba’s life (or an attempt to steal the gem), and send poor Greedo tumbling to the ground. His gift – Jabba’s favourite snack, a bowl of billging grubs – spews all over the floor and up in the air.
Any reader would have to be cold-blooded to not have an outpouring of commiseration for Greedo and his well-intentioned plan.
This glowing orange Sunburst Gem definitely piques one’s interest, but its role in the story remains to be seen. In an alternate cover by Cary Nord, a gruesome-looking Jabba threatens a stuttering Greedo with the Sarlaac pit.
