Xbox Showcase Reveals First Trailer For ‘Star Wars: Outlaws’ Video Game

Following rumors that the Star Wars game from Ubisoft Massive Entertainment (best known for games like Tom Clancy’s The Division and the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora) is set to release sooner than anticipated, the company surprise-dropped a CGI trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase. The trailer suggests that recent reports of a release targeting 2024 may be accurate, though spring might be a tad ambitious.

Without further ado, here is the first look at the new Star Wars game:

The trailer is all CGI, showing a scoundrel-type female character named Kay Vess (sadly, she’s not Doctor Aphra) playing sabacc in a cantina somewhere, before being chased away by bounty hunters. She’s met at her ship by another rogueish character and his companion, a repurposed BX Commando droid wearing a trenchcoat.

Ubisoft will show gameplay for Star Wars: Outlaws at their Ubisoft Forward presentation tomorrow.

Lucasfilm soon lifted the lid on the game’s story on the official Star Wars website, stating that the game will take place mainly in the Star Wars underworld between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Creative director Julian Gerighty shared his excitement for the game:

“It’s a dream come true to be able to collaborate with the team at Lucasfilm Games to create Star Wars Outlaws, the first open-world Star Wars game. Our team at Massive Entertainment has a great deal of experience in open-world games backed by strong technology, and it’s the perfect time to tell an original scoundrel story that will resonate with fans. With the Galactic Empire on the heels of the Rebel Alliance, and the criminal underworld thriving, an outlaw like Kay Vess has a whole galaxy of opportunity in front of her.”

First announced in January 2021, Ubisoft Massive Entertainment’s Star Wars title was confirmed to be an open-world experience using their in-house Snowdrop Engine. Rumors indicated that the game seeks to be the Star Wars franchise’s answer to No Man’s Sky, with a heavy emphasis on player exploration of the galaxy far, far away. News on the title was quiet for all of 2022, until a statement on New Year’s Day this year hinted at updates later in 2023, and Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) creative director Bernd Deimer was hired to work on the project later in January. There have been some indications that the game may have live service elements, which would make sense given that Deimer’s focus is said to be on social interactions. In addition, Nikki Foy has confirmed that she will be serving as the lead writer on Star Wars Outlaws:

Star Wars: Outlaws is set to release sometime in 2024.
