Saw Gerrera Returning for ‘Andor’ Season 2, Forest Whitaker Confirms

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Forest Whitaker confirmed that Saw Gerrera will return for the second season of Andor. Filming for the critically acclaimed TV show is currently underway in the UK. While not much is known about season 2, questions about who from the first season would be returning have been one of the biggest mysteries surrounding season 2.

The first season of Andor featured a host of award-winning actors, including Andy Serkis, Diego Luna, and Stellan Skarsgård. Luna was even nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in the series. However, not every single actor from the first season has been confirmed to return for the second chapter, including Andy Serkis. Rumors have been circulating about Serkis’ return, and it seems that he will indeed be returning for Andor season 2 based on a press release from Lucasfilm. Yet, we’ve also speculated this might have been an accident on the part of Lucasfilm.

Another character that was unconfirmed for Andor season 2 was Saw Gerrera, played by Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker. While on a press tour for his new movie, Big George Foreman, Whitaker was asked whether it was safe to say that Saw Gerrera will be returning for the second season of Andor. Whitaker then replied by saying, “Oh yeah, it’s safe to say that.”

Saw Gerrera first made his appearance in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The show depicted him in his younger years, taking on Separatist droids. Whitaker would then take on the role in live-action for the 2016 movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. But with the prequel series, Andor, taking place only five years before the events of Rogue One, this allowed Whitaker to portray the character once again. The character also showed up in Rebels and The Bad Batch.

In the first season of Andor, Saw Gerrera was shown interacting with Luthen Rael, played by Stellan Skarsgård. In those interactions, Luthen became more militant and even “radical” in his fight against the Empire. Film crews have been seen at Winspit Quarry in Purbeck, Dorset, the location used for Gerrera’s base of operations. However, filming at Winspit Quarry was stalled recently due to unfavorable weather conditions. With Whitaker confirming Saw Gerrera’s return, it appears they were indeed shooting scenes featuring Gerrera’s base and his small group of followers.

Andor season 2 is looking to wrap up production in August, with a release date set for roughly a year later on Disney Plus.
