‘Andor’: Tony Gilroy on How the Structure for Season 2 Is Perfect for Television

Total Film Magazine had the chance to talk briefly with Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy about the plans for season 2, and with Diego Luna, who is over the moon about the show. In addition, the magazine also released two new images from the first season, which will debut its first three episodes September 21st on Disney Plus.

First, Gilroy reiterated what he said at Star Wars Celebration about the overall structure of the show. Andor will be two seasons, the first season covering the year 5 BBY, that is, five years before the events of Rogue One, and the second season covering the 4 years in between season 1 and the movie. As Gilroy told Total Film, the second season will be structured in blocks of three episodes, each one covering each of those four years:

“We have four blocks of three [episodes] coming up [for season 2]. And each block will move you one year closer to Rogue One. And because it’s a year [each time], we can do something really fascinating narratively that you would never have the chance to do in a film. It’s exciting.”

Total Film also confirmed that cameras will start rolling again in November. Diego Luna (Cassian Andor) could not be more excited for the series to finally come out:

“It’s a beautiful moment. We’re getting ready. Things are being written and questioned, going back and forth… it’s beautiful to live that process from beginning to end, you know?”

He also explained how the Cassian we will meet in the first episode is a very different character from the lone ranger we first met in Rogue One:

“It says a lot that his best friend [in the movie] is a droid, you know? Or his only friend, I should say. But in the show we’re going to start with someone who is very different from the quiet, lonely man we meet in Rogue One. We’re so far away from that in this first season; there’s a whole journey for us to explore…”

When asked if we should expect Andor’s partner in crime, K-2SO, in the second season, Luna winked to the camera by saying:

“Our next season ends where Rogue One starts, so I think that answers everything!”

Alan Tudyk confirmed in January 2021 that he would not be in the first season of Andor, despite Kathleen Kennedy’s announcement at D23 in 2019. He would later confirm to Entertainment Weekly that he would be back as the beloved droid at some point in a later season of Andor, so it’s not much of a secret at this point that he will return to a galaxy far, far away. A one-shot comic book released in 2017 explained how Cassian and K-2SO met in canon, though Andor will probably recontextualize or even alter that part of the story. We’ll have to wait and see.

For now, Andor will make its debut on September 21st with its first three episodes. If you want to speculate with us what will happen in those three episodes, and the series overall, make sure to check out our trailer breakdown here. Our own podcast, The Resistance Broadcast, also tackled the trailer, which can check out here as well.
