‘Andor’ Season 2 Filming in Winspit Quarry, Dorset, Featured in Season 1 as Saw Gerrera’s Base

Andor season 2 has been filming for around six months now and has four more to go. After spending a few weeks in Valencia, Spain, for an intense shoot at the City of Arts and Sciences, the entire crew has now moved over to a familiar location from season 1, the Winspit Quarry in Purbeck, Dorset.

The first season already spent a few days shooting there back in May 2021, and the sets were then featured in the show as the cave where Saw Gerrera is hiding when Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael visits him. According to the local news website Dorset Live, the place will be closed to the public from April 12 through April 29, though it’s possible filming hasn’t started yet. The first season involved three days’ worth of filming starting on May 11, 2021, but since it was closed for a few weeks to allow the crew to set up base before that day, we don’t know whether it will have more or less screentime than before.

Knowing how the Andor series has been operating so far, it’s likely this is also not the only set being used at the moment. Multiple directors are working on multiple episodes at the same time, and it’s likely that not every major actor is needed in Dorset, which is why part of the cast may be set up somewhere else in the UK. The Acolyte is the other Star Wars show that is currently filming in the UK, though production should wrap up within the next few weeks.

The entire cast of Andor is coming back for the second season; in fact, there have been no reports about new actors joining the ensemble. (This is an interesting detail for a show that is so open about who is working on it.) The writers are also all back, with the addition of Tom Bissell, who wrote a three-episode arc for the new season. Ariel Kleiman (six eps.), Janus Metz (three eps.), and Alonso Ruizpalacios (three eps.) are the directors of the new season.

There has been a lot of talk about Andy Serkis possibly returning for the new season recently, following the inclusion of his name in a press release by Lucasfilm. While it’s entirely possible the new story will factor him into it, we’ve also speculated that this might be an error on Lucasfilm’s end, and he may not be back after all. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Andor season 2 will wrap production this August and is targeting a release date on Disney Plus around 12 months later.
