Rumor: ‘Star Wars Episode I: Racer’ To Get Remaster

A new rumor suggests that, after being ported to modern consoles not too long ago, Star Wars Episode I: Racer will receive a full remaster.

Originally released as one of many video game tie-ins to The Phantom Menace back in 1999, the first Racer game was digitally ported to modern consoles in 2020 and subsequently included in bundles and physical format the following year. But it appears as though simply moving the game over from late-90s gaming platforms to modern hardware wasn’t enough — now, there’s buzz that an unknown studio is working on a full-blown remaster of the original title.

On r/GamingLeaksAndRumors, an anonymous report has indicated that a more in-depth remaster of the title, completely updating the audiovisual presentation and much of the gameplay, will release during the fourth quarter of this year. And while this is the first time that the studio doing the remaster has done a remaster of this kind, they have apparently worked on the Star Wars IP before, leading to some speculation that they may be Aspyr Media, who handled many of the previous ports. It could also be Criterion Games, a studio connected to Electronic Arts that worked on some of the vehicular aspects of the modern Star Wars Battlefront games — the studio became famous for the fast-and-furious Burnout racing titles.

Lucasfilm Games has had ambitious plans for the Star Wars gaming scene for quite some time now, in anticipation of the end of the exclusivity contract with Electronic Arts. Since game development on new titles usually takes a while, and Lucasfilm Games plans to get at least two major titles out per year, it would not be too surprising if remasters are used to help put out additional content. Star Wars Episode I: Racer is also a fan-favorite title, and since the recent port of the game appears to have sold well, it only makes sense to go back to it and upgrade the entire thing. As it stands, the original version of the video game is available for digital download on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and macOS.
