‘Star Wars’ Lands Three Nominations at 70th Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards

Star Wars keeps reinforcing its presence in the awards season as three of its TV series have landed nominations at the 70th Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (MPSE) Golden Reel Awards.

The last few months have brought much success and awards buzz to Lucasfilm mainly thanks to Andor, which landed two big nominations at the Critics Choice Awards, an Outstanding Score nod to composer Nicholas Britell from the Society of Composers & Lyricists, and even a Best Performance nomination for Diego Luna at the Golden Globes.

Today, January 9, we’ve learned via The Hollywood Reporter about three new noms for the Star Wars teams, spread across three different TV productions: Andor, Tales of the Jedi, and LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation.

– Tony Gilroy’s much-celebrated show landed an “Outstanding Achievement In Sound Editing – Broadcast Long Form Effects/Foley” nom for Reckoning, its third episode. It’s going up against heavy-hitters such as Better Call Saul, Gaslit, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and Stranger Things.

– The anthology series Tales of the Jedi got some recognition in the “Outstanding Achievement In Sound Editing – Broadcast Animation” category for its fourth episode, The Sith Lord. In this category, we also find Jurassic World: Camp CretaceousLove, Death & Robots, and Transformers: Earthspark.

– And finally, LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation will be competing in the “Outstanding Achievement In Sound Editing – Non-Theatrical Animation” category, which is dedicated to non-theatrical animated productions which aren’t part of series. The other nominees are The Ice Age Adventures of Buck WildJurassic World: Camp Cretaceous’ Hidden Adventure, and Rise of the Teenage Ninja Turtles: The Movie.

Competition is fierce this season, but Star Wars television has a history of winning big against improbable odds in awards which celebrate technical achievements, especially since Lucasfilm’s output for Disney Plus started to ramp up, so it’s likely the franchise will score several wins over the coming weeks. Stay tuned as we keep tabs on the new noms and possible wins coming to a galaxy far, far away in 2023.
