‘Andor’ Gets Outstanding Score Nomination From Society of Composers & Lyricists

Nominations for the Annual Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards have been announced, and Andor has been nominated in the category of “Outstanding Score for a Television Production”. Nicholas Britell (Moonlight, Succession) composed the music for the series, and worked on it for two years, which is almost unprecedented for a television series.

Britell will be facing off against Siddhartha Khosla for his score for Only Murders in the Building, Bear McCreary for his work on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Theodore Shapiro for Severance, and Cristobal Tapia de Veer for The White Lotus.

Andor SCL Awards

As Britell explained in the lead-up to the release of Andor, he first worked with Tony Gilroy to put together a piece of music they needed to play on set. This happened before cameras began rolling — we learned after the series aired that music was the percussion needed in episode 3 during the Aldhani Eye Festival and the funeral march in the finale. Many months later, once principal photography was done, Britell started to come up with the main themes and sounds for the series, and eventually moved on to more specific pieces of music for each episode. The complex score for the series involves 12 different variations of the main title theme that feel distinctively separate but still reminiscent of one another, as well as a different sound for each planet — the score for Aldhani was completely different than the one we got during the scenes on the recreative planet in episode 7.

Britell will fight against harsh competition with The Rings of Power‘s Bear McCreary, who, following in on the steps of Howard Shore, elevated the material to a whole new level with his music. Siddhartha Khosla might be the surprise nominee (though no less deserving), with House of the Dragon‘s Ramin Djawadi missing a nod. His score, though, was heavily inspired by his previous work on Game of Thrones, while the SCL clearly went for a list of five unique scores.

The ceremony will be held on February 15, 2023.
