Deborah Chow Nominated by the Directors Guild of America for Helming ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’
The Directors Guild of America have announced their nominees for the 75th edition of the DGA Awards, and Star Wars has reason to celebrate. Deborah Chow, who directed all six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, has been nominated in the category of “Movies for Television and Limited Series”.
Other nominees in that category include Eric Appel, for directing the Roku Channel film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story; Jeremy Podeswa, for directing the episode titled Unbroken Circle of the show Station Eleven; Helen Shaver, for directing the episode Who’s There from Station Eleven too; and Tom Verica, for directing the episode The Devil Wore Anna from the show Inventing Anna. It’s worth noting that Chow is the only nominee who has helmed all episodes from a limited series, while Appel is the only director of a TV movie.
It’s a big week for TV awards nominations — the DGA announced their nominees on Tuesday, while the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of America are announcing their nominations on Wednesday, January 11, and finally, on Thursday, the Producers Guild of America will announce their TV nominees.
Andor has been representing the Star Wars name this season in most instances so far, so Deborah Chow’s name might have come up as a surprise, but it sure is a welcome one. Disney has been campaigning for the former, forcing Obi-Wan Kenobi to take a step back. If the Diego Luna-led show was going to miss a nomination from one of the main guild awards, it was likely going to be the DGA. The show’s writing, ensemble, and overall quality will likely be recognized by the WGA, SAG, and PGA, respectively. More accolades could still come for Obi-Wan Kenobi, so stay tuned.
The DGA Awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 18, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
