TSWS Reveals Clip of Rey’s Third Lesson, A Deleted Scene From The Last Jedi + Han Solo’s Funeral to be Mentioned in the Novelization of TLJ

The Star Wars Show revealed a clip from Rey’s third lesson, a deleted scene from The Last Jedi which will be incorporated into the novelization of the film by author Jason Fry. The show delves into the creative process behind the novelization, showing the collaboration between writer/director Rian Johnson and Jason Fry.

Go to the 3:00 mark where the segment begins. They discuss incorporating deleted scenes from the film into the novelization, including a brief eight second clip from the “third lesson” Luke had for Rey on Ahch-To. Check it out:

Also it was revealed that Han Solo’s funeral will be mentioned in the movie’s novelization by Jason Fry that will be released on March 6. That is something that we’ve discussed with you in the past…

Not only does this make me look forward to Fry’s novelization, but also the completely produced deleted scenes that will appear on the home video release!

    Good to see TSWS back.

The thing is about funerals in the saga movies, there’s always one in the 3rd movie. Padme in the PT, and Anakin in the OT. So, it makes sense they reserve it for Leia in Episode IX. But, instead of showing it in the end, they should show it in the opening act. Would complete Poe’s arc to becoming General Dameron, leader of the new rebellion.

My knowledge deficit of the PT aside. They should still have Leia’s funeral in the opening act of Episode IX.

Well, we can only assume the burning was in honour. The other Jedi might’ve all been tutting and muttering ‘I knew he’d never vanish and become one with the force. Let’s just burn him and say he disappeared.’

I wonder what happens, when you eat a Jedi: I mean, does your body process the Midichlorians of a Jedi, when eating and put them into your own cells so that you become (more) force sensitive? … asking for a friend.

That would make an interesting study. Maybe that’s how Snoke became a powerful darksider. He ate bits of Jedi he found lying around. Mace Windus arm, Luke’s hand etc, etc.

They could show Leia’s funeral taking place next to Han’s grave. Throw in a memorial of Luke as well.

They could build a statue there, too, in memorial of the heroes. In another saga/story, a thousand years later, they could show these and we see how it aged, but no one from the movie remembers, who those guys were or what they did. Similar to the trolls in LOTR, that were made to stone in the Hobbit and briefly shown in the LOTR movie.

I so much want that scene in the film… damn… it would be great to have an extended cut of TLJ. Sadly that won’t happen. Or maybe in this case it will? I can see the release of a director’s cut as a mean to further try to save the situation. Not that TLJ was unsuccessful, but more likely so to at least try to convince haters.

As far as I could see, main points about TLJ involve Luke’s attitude, Canto Bight and Holdo. I cannot see how any extended version of TLJ could convince anyone.

No, son. I think the PT was pretty shitty at times and was a 3 film missed opportunity. I think Dave Filoni is highly overrated and I find Rebels to be pretty bland.

I read every Legends novel and most were meh.

I thought KOTOR 2 was boring and the entire series overrated.

The Force Unleashed is a terrible video game and I regret playing it and buying the novel.

I also don’t have to prove anything to you, but since you are intent on saying stupid shit, I will gladly make you look like a fool.

It’s funny you just mentioned this. Because I happen to really like the ST, dimwits like this guy often accuse me of being some sort of apologist for everything Star Wars. Or…you know…they bust out the “easily pleased” or “eat everything up” phrase.

            Baseless and tedious.

I’m not a big Prequel fan. I liked perhaps 5 out of the 50 Legends novels I read. I liked Clone Wars. Rebels is okay. I can’t think of one comic series that I really enjoyed. I could care less about video games. So…I probably actually enjoy far less Star Wars narrative than I enjoy.

Rian Johnson just needs to stop explaining. He doesn’t owe anyone any explanation — and I say this as someone who doesn’t like TLJ (sorry).

Rian, you got to write and direct a Star Wars movie. The vast majority of critics loved it. It brought in over a billion friggin’ dollars. But you have to either accept or ignore the fact that many fans just don’t like it. Sorry if this likely means your SW trilogy is dead, and Disney will file away your three movie treatments for the proposed trilogy, pay you for them, and not bother to read them. That’s how it goes. You’re a talented filmmaker still (I loved Brick). Move on to your next project.

Well I loved it, but I agree; he needs to stop this constant explapology. A lot of the people here who hate it do for whatever valid reasons, just as I have valid reasons for liking it. A lot however seem to be determined to hate it more with every attempt to clarify things they didn’t get or didn’t like.
When you’re faced with arguing the point with people determined to damn your arguments no matter what you say, why give them the time of day? He’s getting paid very handsomely either way.

I think it’s a element of the current times: the Information Era connects us all in a very unprecedent way, so now someone as RJ has means to answer things. And the movie is admitedly complex and deep, so, the conversation is interesting.

The problem, as you correct pointed, is that the people who hates the movie (not those who simple dislike, but those who HATE) won’t really accept any logical (or not) explanation, and will only bark offenses, diminishing the possibility of great discussions about the themes of the movie, with the creator himsef.

I think they’re foreshadowing for that to backfire on her in the third movie. Luke mentions how she doesn’t hesitate when being drawn towards the dark, and she wins against Kylo in TFA by calling on the Dark Side. She’s this powerful because she’s taking the easy path, much like Yoda warned against. Rey (and most of the audience due to favorable editing) just hasn’t realized what’s going on yet. Rey is not a champion of the light.

I think the thing is, we probably don’t need to see it. We can just assume it. Not everything needs to be on screen. I think since the resistance was being chased from the opening of the latest movie that they didn’t have any time to pause.

I’m with you on Rey’s third lesson though, as it’s integral to the story. If we’re told there are three lessons they should probably show three or cut that line.

I agree that it’s complicated to have a funeral since movie starts with a chase but if i had creative input in the movie i would have had some time in before the FO starts chasing the Resistance instead of starting with that. Or maybe after the first Hyperspace jump they don’t find them right away but the FO takes some time to track them which gives some time on a different planet for stuff like this. This also gives more for Rey to train an improve in a more natural way.

The FO already had their location in the third act of TFA. They were preparing to shoot with Starkiller Base on D’Quar (mirroring the threat to Yavin 4 in ANH).

There are many ways they could have written the script to fix that. Just day the FO took a while to recover and gather their forces after the huge defeat at the end of TFA, or that the Resistance evacuated to a different base before the FO hoy to D’Qar so It took a bit of time for them to be found again, or don’t make hyperspace tracking so convenient maybe through having the Resistance escape the first encounter only for the FO to “lock-on to their signal” on the next space Battle.
These are just from the top of my head so I’m sure that there are better methods but my point is that there are hundreds of ways they could have rewriten the first few minutes to make it work.

No, because what’s already been revealed about ‘Lesson 3’ shows Luke as a sly trickster, and if you didn’t like the portayal of him before, then apparently this scene will make it even worse !! However, it does reveal more about the Caretakers and their menfolk….

As for Han’s funeral, how do we know it’s *not* going to be presented as a postscript ? Before or after ‘Broom Boy’ ?

I think the Resistance was pretty busy trying to avoid joining him in death to hold a funeral, what with them being busy trying to evacuate, and then being harried and pursued constantly throughout the entire movie.

Pablo Hidalgo has said that is there is a discrepancy between the film and the novel, the film is canon.
So no, there is no funeral scene

    • January 25, 2018 at 3:12 pm
      Permalink

      That’s not what discrepancy means.

If the same scene depicts different things, the film is what matters.

We won’t know if the funeral is “canon” until it is mentioned in the movie or in another source besides the novelization.

Example: Poe meets Rey in TFA, but he also meets her in TLJ.
Two depictions, so the one in the movie is the one that matters.

Things mentioned in the book, but are not in the movie are possible things, like deleted scenes.

Exactly. Like we don’t know if Unkar Plutt has one arm or two until we actually see him again on screen or it is mentioned in a different comic/novel that isn’t a Force Awakens adaptation.

        • January 26, 2018 at 1:47 pm

Deleted scenes are a case by case analysis. Pablo Hidalgo stated that himself. As an example, the meeting between senators who opposed Palpatine in Ep. III is canon. The scene where Jedi Master Shaak Ti dies in the hand of Gen. Grievous is not.

I believe that the Unkar Plutt scene is not canon. I don’t see it fitting in the overall plot of the movie or the canon itself. But, is as you said, we can know for sure when other canon source clarifies it, os a official employee of Lucasfilm with credentials to say something about it.

      • January 26, 2018 at 1:42 pm
        Permalink

In that particular case it will be canon. That’s one of the reasons the novelization will come in march, to avoid contradictions. As Rian Johnson itself sit with Jason Fry to discuss the insertion of those scenes in the book, we can rest assured that they will be full canon.

I believe that it is being made this way to avoid exactly that “Poe meets Ray” problem.

There is the possibilty of JJ bringing contradictory events in Ep. IX, but I doubt it. The declaration is clear here: the deleted scenes wich finds it way to TLJ novelization counts as true.

Think of it like levels of canon: You have movies, then TV shows, then books. So if the movie and the book disagree, then the movie is correct. Movie to movie discrepancies, however, are a little tougher. That’s what Pablo is for though (:

TLJ’s worldwide box office is 40 % down compared to TFA and that decline would have been bigger if it were not for the fans who went to see the movie spoiler-free hoping that it would be great. My suggestion: keep RIJ away from any Star Wars property if you want to protect the franchise.

Its nice that you can bring up one fact that seems to support your opinion, but ignore another fact that doesnt exactly support it. Such as the fact that worldwide the movie has made 1 billion dollars. “Terrible” movies dont make that kind of money no matter how the fan base judges it. Example of that might be Justice league. Do you want another fact? Empire Strikes Back made substantially less than A new Hope. By your logic, the lower box office signified a backlash with the Star Wars fans back then and half didnt like ESB.

It is all relative. When a movie is expected to make US$ 2.1 bi and it makes “only” US$ 1.3 bi, it is a flop. The standards for Star Wars are not the same as for any ordinary franchise. Pretty much anything that has the SW label on it is expected to make US$ 1 bi, no matter how bad it is.

Except TLJ was never expected to make 2.1b by any sane analyst. It was projected for anywhere between 1,2-1,7.
It flopped in Asia, so it’s the lower end. Large financial success nevertheless. Have a look at the DCEU if you want to see a real flop.

You presented two opinions and while opinions dont always have to be backed up by facts, your first opinion is not correct. A movie is considered a flop when its box office does not meet or exceed the cost of the budget. Thats not debatable or a relative matter. Its very different from saying a movie did not meet expectations in a box office sense, so dont conflate the two. I dont know how much Disney expected TLJ to make, but do understand that the movie up to this point has grossed 10x more than what it costed?! A movie making 1 billion is not an everyday headline. I know they had a “relatively” bad opening in China with “only” 28.7 million opening weekend, but that brings me to your second opinion which is far closer to being a valid point, and that is the power of nostalgia. Its the reason it made so much domestically and so poorly in China, which doesnt have that nostalgia factor. Even with that, I dont believe studios think that anything Star Wars automatically equals 1 billion dollars, given the reports that Disney is bracing itself for a weak showing for the Solo movie.
