T-65 X-Wing Fighter

When it comes to Star Wars, one of the things you can’t help but think of is the is the iconic T-65 X-Wing Fighter used by Luke Skywalker to destroy the Death Star –.

The X-wing’s power and size could be intimidating to new pilots. However, most pilots found the fighters gratifyingly responsive to their commands. Luke Skywalker used skills honed flying the T-16 skyhopper through Tatooine’s canyons to great effect.

A versatile Rebel Alliance starfighter that balances speed with firepower, it is armed with four laser cannons and two proton torpedo launchers found on either side of its fuselage. The rebel pilots relied on proton torpedoes to penetrate the ray-shielded thermal exhaust port that was the Death Star’s lone vulnerable point. Onboard targeting computers told the pilots when to fire – though Luke shut off his computer and listened to the Force instead.

The flight surfaces of an X-wing are also called S-foils. During battle, the S-foils spread open to form the distinctive split-winged X shape, which provides a broader field of fire for the laser cannons mounted on each tip.

Nimble engines give the X-wing an edge during dogfights, and a shield generator protects it from laser fire – a feature that gives it an advantage over the Empire’s unshielded TIE fighter. The socket behind the X-wing’s cockpit accommodates an astromech droid. During flight, the droid can calculate hyperspace jumps and perform simple repairs. All in all, the X-wing can take on anything the Empire throws at it!

TIE/LN Fighter

Unforgettable symbols of the Imperial fleet, TIE/LN Fighters were carried aboard Star Destroyers and battle stations. They were single-pilot vehicles designed for fast-paced dogfights with Rebel X-wings and other starfighters. The terrifying roar of a TIE/LN’s engines would strike fear into the hearts of all enemies of the Empire.

These Fighters played many roles within the Imperial fleet: conducting reconnaissance for Star Destroyers, serving as sentry ships for the Death Star and patrolling the skies of Imperial worlds.

As they lacked shields and tough armour, they depended on manoeuvrability and their pilots’ skill for effectiveness in combat. Their lack of defences made flying one a dangerous calling, but TIE pilots took a perverse pride in the flaws of their craft. They saw the ability to fly a TIE effectively as the sign of true ability for a pilot.
