Fan Film ‘5-25-77’ Gets Trailer and Release Date

Patrick Read Johnson’s long awaited film project, 5-25-77 finally gets a trailer and a release date that’s the same day that George Lucas’s space opera ‘Star Wars’ blasted into cinemas. Read on for more!

Harry Knowles of AintitCoolNews is reporting that Patrick Read Johnson’s autobiographical coming-of-age drama, 5-25-77 will finally be released in select cinemas. The film revolves around the epic story of young Pat (Daly), who turned his house into a mini-film studio where he made homegrown versions of science fiction features. During a vacation to Los Angeles in early 1977, he stumbles upon a fledgling special-effects house (Industrial Light & Magic) that was attempting to finish a film called Star Wars before its release date. When he finally returned home, he went to see the completed visionary film on the big screen. This unexpected cosmic event ended up changing his life forever.

Then and Now:

Production on the fan film began in the summer of 2004, but was quickly halted due to lack of funds. Since then, Johnson has been working tirelessly on adding additional material whenever he’s had the time and the money. For a while it seemed general audiences might not have the chance to see the film theatrically. However, Johnson’s determination appears to have got him a final release date.

Now, the event you’ve all been waiting for is finally here…

Looks fun. I’m curious to check it out. Hard to believe it took more than 13 years to complete. That’s obvious dedication on Patrick Read Johnson’s part – it was a project he cared for so much he wouldn’t let it go until it was finished. Sometimes it’s fun to see this kind of extreme, unadulterated nerd-love for Star Wars. I think we all can identify with it, to some degree. And if it can make us laugh (including laughing at ourselves), then it should be a fun time. Hope it’s a good flick.

Looks cute, appropriately nerdy and fun. Hopefully, it’s good and people go to see it.

It took 13 years to make. Give it awards for that reason alone like that terrible Boyhood movie.

“The Enterprise has deflector shields”. It’s probably true that the Star Trek / Star Wars debates started in 77. We had Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing. They had. . . wait for it. . . William Shatner! 😀
