Looks dark, good. The poster is amazing though, really retro, and the saber has two the colors, I wonder if Rey can turn to the dark side, in order to defeat Kylo, both die and thus the Jedi end.

I think it’s a flashback, when Kylo rebelled. It really reminds me of that scene when Luke was touching R2D2 in TFA. Next shot of Phasma walking is just to confuse people 😉

Yes exactly! that’s what Abrams called a force back. And yes that shot of Phasma seems to be made to confuse. The floor looks from an hangar.

That’s a great idea @srph25. They have an opportunity to put a lot of texture with the sparks and the smoke, which will make the effect close to perfection. I would like to see that. It would help to feel how many years have passed that we unknown.

      Yes.

I’ve just seen the spanish version of it which the background dialog is clearer.

We see Leia, we hear her saying: “you are my only hope”.

We see Kylo’s mask in pieces, we hear Obi saying: “seduced by the dark side”

And then we see the bookshelf and we hear Yoda saying: “it surrounds us, and it binds us”

Or, maybe of how the age of the Jedi existence is over and now is the time to pass over to a new generation of Light-side defenders.

      • April 14, 2017 at 8:10 pm
        Permalink

That’s a possibility too and if that’s the case I would expect the line to come at the end of the second act, beginning of the third.

As the Sith are now gone it may make sense to have the light side defenders evolve into something else, maybe something more encompassing of the force as a whole. The teaser does point to the philosophy of the force being expanded upon significantly in this film.

The light and dark being brought together into one in balance. Like Yin and Yang. That’s the true balance.

The conflict for so many generations in the SW universe has stemmed from this separation between the light and dark side of the Force. It’s affected the way societies have been structured throughout that universe. And it appears to have been for the worse throughout.

I feel we will be getting ep 11,12,13 soon after this triology ends (as in not waiting 10 years).
While i think this will function as a cohesive triology, I think it will blend more into s sequence of films (involving rey, finn , kylo etc).

      • April 14, 2017 at 8:15 pm
        Permalink

I doubt it’ll be 10 years after the last saga film either. Probably more like 3 or 4.

        • April 14, 2017 at 8:19 pm
          Permalink

I think they are going to have a triology set between ep10 and ep11 which is distinct from Rey story (eg Obiwan or Old Republic). With solo spin off films between each filmof that triology (the way Rogue fit between ep7 and ep8).
So I would say 6 years of waiting.
But I do feel we will be following the Rey story well past ep13.

      • April 14, 2017 at 11:31 pm
        Permalink

If they are going to produce the Second Sequel Trilogy fairly soon after Episode 9, there is even the awesome possibility that the “end” (in Ep. 9) will NOT be happy, but more in line with the end of the Prequel Trilogy: The bad guys have taken over. Maybe the Second Sequel Trilogy would be about the overthrow of the New Empire established by the First Order in Episode 9. (But how long could they go on doing this before galactic history becomes altogether boringly “cyclical”, with evil empires regularly coming and going every second generation?)

        • April 15, 2017 at 12:17 am
          Permalink

I feel they could bring an “ending” to this triology through Snoke.
          (a) simply killing Snoke and have Ren take his place as the main leader.
          or
          (b) have Snoke seduce Rey
We know Snoke was interested in Kylo because he assumed Kylo was the balance between the Light and the Dark.
But now it seems Rey is going to master this balance through Luke.
I doubt Snoke is sentimental and would gladly throw Kylo aside to get to Reys power.

          • April 15, 2017 at 4:35 am
            Permalink

thing being here… Snoke didn’t want a grey guy. He wanted Kylo to slay Solo to fall fully to the dark so that he could complete his training. The true test of Kylo was could he kill his own father to become the tool that Snoke needs for what ever nefarious reasons he may now have in epVIII. Well that is my take anyways….

          • April 15, 2017 at 4:45 am
            Permalink

Im sure in the novel of TFA Snoke mentions to Kylo is unique because he is between the light and the dark (being realed to luke+leia and vader).
If anything Kylo fully embracing the dark by killing Han (which something I feel was Kylo deciison not Snokes) would make him want to seek out Rey; again assuming Snoke does want the balance.
Overall, this is all speculation and Snoke could just be working for Maz Kanata.

lol yeah copy that. It certainly makes epVIII much more interesting considering that we not only get to see Rey training but Kylo as well. I’m very interested in seeing just how all this ends up falling out.

To sum up quickly: I think she’s like X-23 is to Logan. She was made in a secret Imperial facility on Jaaku. They used the DNA from Luke’s hand which had been recovered from Bespin. They had Luke’s saber, too. When the Empire fell, the project continued for several more years. Then it was discontinued, and the scientists ditched Rey because she would become too dangerous. They used Luke’s saber to buy a ship to get off Jaaku.

The Empire fell back to Jaaku because they were protecting this project: to create clones powerful in the Force. It was their last hope.

Certainly going in the right direction and getting that feel good factor just watching it over and over. 🙂

Will have to wait and see on the walker attack, hopefully its tied into the space battle so its more akin to R1 than TESB. Otherwise the only thing I was hoping for was more damage to Kylo’s face, as didn’t think the scar was over the eye itself. With the lighting though most likely a lot more to be shown.

I’m failing to post a picture up from TFA. It’s certainly going to be only a light scar at the top, but more damage lower down, that we can’t see. Pretty sure the scar is in the wrong position though, unless the image I found was wrong.

Going to have to rewatch those scenes later….

Oh yeah. With those two pictures side-by-side it’s a noticeable difference. Don’t these filmmakers know the level of OCD they’re dealing with in us Star Wars fans? They better have Rain-Man as their continuity supervisor or else they’ll be hell to pay!

I know you’re joking about it, but I actually think is great that the approach seems to be “yeah, fuck the OCD-fan”. The obsessive over-analysis of every single tiny detail, no matter how irrelevant, is – togheter with the fixation on “tying everything up as neatly as possible” – one of the worst aspects of the SW fandom.

It’s kind of a double-edged sword for Lucasfilm. Star Wars has stayed relevant and successful for 40 years because of it’s extremely passionate fans. These passionate (some might even say obsessive) fans (like a lot of us here) have put a lot of money into Lucasfilm’s pockets over the years. I’m sure they like that very much. The downside is the extreme criticism they have to deal with on everything they do. But I’m sure the good (butt-loads of money) outweigh the bad (whining and crying fans) in their view. And I genuinely think they try and do right by us fans and give us what we want, but like the old adage goes – you can’t please all of the people all of the time. I’ve come on these boards to express my complaints about some of the things that bother me in Star Wars, but I still love the saga and always will (I hope).

Does it seem like the lines at the end are not spoken solely using Luke’s voice? Specifically, the “it’s time for the Jedi…” line? I know Benecio has a thick accent, but I instantly thought of him when I first heard it. Luke’s line “…to end” is definitely Mark’s voice.

This teaser trailer is very Rey and Luke focused. We see/hear them the majority of it, while just about everyone else – Leia, Finn, Poe, Kylo, Phasma – just get one or two quick shots with no dialogue. Not a complaint, just an observation.

You have one of the weirdest obsessions on wasted screen time I’ve seen yet from a fan. I get that you want to see Darth Vader on the big screen again like you did with the Rogue One trailers. I get that the OT holds this very special place in your heart where those characters are extremely special to you, but… dude. They are just movies. Let the creators do their thing, our Star Wars OT and even our PT has come and passed. Now it’s time for the next generation to enjoy their Star Wars movies.

Just because you might not like these new characters or this new direction or whatever you dislike about the new films doesn’t mean that everybody dislikes them.

I think it’s time to realize and accept that.

If this line is heard early in the movie, it may actually be a test for Rey when she asks to be trained. Compare how Yoda initially “refused” to train Luke. The teacher wants the prospective student to really beg to be trained, thus also committing more deeply to the Jedi path.

It may be, but my impression is that, when Rey first meets Luke, he has indeed rejected the Jedi way and embraced a different, possibly grayer view of the force. That also ties with the dialogue where Rey sees the light, the darkness, the balance and Luke says there is much more to it. Anyway, the teaser is too sketchy to draw any hard conclusions.

You know, I agree with this story direction. The light and dark are like Yin and Yang. They need to come together in harmony and balance.

As for the space politics, I could see the slate being wiped clean after Episode IX. The Republic collapses but so does the FO. All the planets and sentient beings need to start again, but under a more enlightened era that the union between the light and dark bring. I predict this could be the greater, profound vision of the evolution of the Star Wars universe that the main writers (especially Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams) are aiming for with this trilogy.

There may not be movies or canon media exploring this new era until the late 2020’s, as Disney/Lucasfilm appear wanting to take a break from Star Wars after Episode IX and one or two more anthology movies after TLJ and the Solo movie.

Your reaction seems to be the most common reaction throughout social media, i.e. the trailer was seen mostly as disappointing or underwhelming, but it is only a teaser and it is still too early to tell.

Anyway, it looks like they are going in the direction of a broken Luke who has embraced a grey view of the force. I don’t particularly like that, but it may work out depending on what happens next in Episodes VIII and IX.

Here you go. Plain and simple ideas put into view…

The Jedi must end. Why? Because without the Jedi, the darkside can not exist. The balance of the force is there because one side is needed to counter act the other. Maybe it’s not a numbers game. Just because there is one in existence, there needs to be one to counter balance the other.

My prediction? Kylo Ren is going back to the light side. Rey will go dark to balance Kylo’s change of heart.

Once Luke discovered that Snoke was on the dark side, he destroyed his Jedi temple. Yes, Luke dissolved the temple. Knowing that the Jedi cause an imbalance in the force.

So many questions, so many answers.

One cannot tap into anger to boost his force skills without descending into the dark path. Once a force user goes down that “shortcut”, it will overpower him and dominate his destiny. That is why the ways of the grey are dangerous and actually unstable. Ben Solo started out as grey and eventually fully embraced darkness.

Meh. It would be cool if it was confirmed that they are using Kylo’s theme again but it seems like the trailer music is never used in the final film with the Disney films. I liked the teaser music for TFA/R1 but I don’t think it worked quite so well here by comparison.

At least it looks like we are finally getting some new vehicles even if they look a little goofy looking and Luke actually has some dialogue this around but not much to get excited about here, No real standout moments or major surprises but I’m sure those will come in future spots.

To be fair, I liked R1 a lot and really did give much of a crap about the initial teaser either. At the very least, It looks like they are taking it in a darker direction which is a good thing but I’m more excited about Han Solo at this point even though it has a 50/50 chance of sucking.

I think Disney has rescued the franchise. If George Lucas was still in charge, we’d still be in CGI hell, with dialogue like: “Master Obi wan would be very grumpy”… “You are soooooo beautiful….it’s because I’m so in love. …. so love has blinded you?”
“I know the perfect place by the lake in Naboo….” UGH.

+From my perspective, Disney is not rescuing the franchise, it was never in trouble. I am glad they want to make more movies, books, games, comics, etc , but im just not personally thrilled with their direction.

George Lucas might not be the best writer or director (Ep 1 and 2), but at least his version of 7 (& 8) wouldn’t have been a copy of 4 (& 5, though we will see), they would have been original.

I’m not a super fan of the prequels either, but after reading the non-canon (1-3) books ALONG with the plagus novel, they make much more sense and work, so when I view 1-3 I think of them in that context and they are much more tolerable, with fewer wtf moments.

The Phantom Menace is just as similar to A New Hope as The Force Awakens was. You can go through that movie and draw direct comparisons with nearly every plot point. The two films even end on the exact same shot. This idea that the prequels were so bold and original, whereas Episode 7 was nothing but a remake is absolutely bogus.

that’s an interesting opinion, I have never seen that idea that that THM is same as ANH in any way, but perhaps I never looked at it that way…I did watch TPM last week and in no way do I see it as a ANH remake, I also watched TFA (i watched them all in row, including RO in order 1-7), and I do see way too many 4 in 7 similarities.

          • April 15, 2017 at 7:23 am
            Permalink

That’s because the differences lies mostly in the visual aesthetics, but the story is still very similar. Seriously think about every moment of TPM for a bit, if you take out the pod race, there are still a lot of similarities in the story. I’ve gone through and done this comparison and contrast with every chapter which took forever and then lost it all. 🙁

But if you want me to lay out the similarities I will. The Phantom Menace is just as similar to A New Hope as The Force Awakens is. Obviously, the more broad and vague you go the easier it is to draw comparisons. For example they are all movies about Good vs. Evil.

As soon as you bring in aesthetics everything seems more different, but that’s just an illusion. 🙂

I find it interesting that Empire had the weakest box-office of all the OT films and fairly mixed reviews at the time. Now almost everyone considers it one of the greatest films of all time (myself included). It’s just funny how opinions and memories can change over time.

    Wow!
Dunno why it is so hard to please fans. This looks epic!
    1. Luke talks a lot
    2. New ships (even if variants)
    3. Land and space battles
    4. New planets

I hope it does evoke empire as it threw our heroes into disarray and we wanted to fight for them.

If the teaser is anything to go by this will be amazing.

    Just enjoy the ride!

If it follows standard narrative structure (and, yes, it will), yes, it will not only throw our heroes into, it will also leave our heroes in disarray.

Because an, unfortunately vocal, minority of SW “fans” (and I use the word loosely) actually hate themselves so, no matter what happens with the movies and other material, their first and foremost priority is finding stuff to complain about (or making it up, when they can’t find any) just for the sake of feeling misarable and in the attempt to make other people feel as miserable as them.

It happened with TFA, it happened with R1, is happening now with TLJ and will keep happening with every movie. But it’s completely and utterly irrelevant: these movies are made for the general audience, not for a bunch of mouth-foaming nerds, and general audience don’t give a crap about the stuff they’re whining about. Also, while they whine like little children, they’re also first in line to see the movie, often times for multiple views.

“Let them pass in peace” 🙂

Looks awesome! I like that the writers are challenging established concepts (even the Jedi), and it felt like Rogue One was already moving in that way anyway, with characters having different relationships to the Force in unique ways. Breaks up the dichotomy, keeps things fresh and unexpected, looks to me like it will be an amazing film. Plus – looks like we have podracers again! Most unexpected!

Gonna have to disagree with you. The photography in R1 grabbed me right away, with stunning compositions, great palettes, and deep blacks, while this is leaving me a bit cold so far with some kinda boring, flat shots. The ship designs in R1 felt like they belonged in SW, these, apart from the A-Wing and other recycled designs, feel a little stumpy, undeveloped, and….and, if I’m being honest, a bit Sci-Fi channel to me. I’m willing to chalk it up to being a first teaser, but I’m kinda, and believe me THIS is surprising to me, more excited for what Lord and Miller are cooking up than E8 at this point.

That shot of Kylo Ren, to me, is anything but boring and flat. As for the designs, we have yet to see them in full. I happen ot think that they’re pretty cool, and i do find it ironic that the second a Sta Wars movie starts putting out original ship designs, people find a reason to complain anyway.

Can’t win..have the same designs people will complain about lack of creativity..add new ones (which I personally thought were awesome) and they’ll complain about it.

Exactly. Even with the trailer,s fans can’t make up their minds. Show a bit of the story and the fans complain that you showed the whole movie. Put out a teaser and fans complain that they didn’t get anything.

        Half agree Half disagree.

I think the cinematography is a lot better in this film based on what I’ve seen, well as far as saga films go. Rogue one felt more like watching a documentary to me. Keep in mind this is just the first teaser. The shot with the rocks & Rey swinging the saber from a distance was a fantastic shot… & the red plumes coming up from the ground look gorgeous… fantastic color scheme there.

I agree about the ships though… looks like modernized nebulon b frigates. They gotta go back to the old days of building ships out of pieces of model kits and got knows what else. The reason being that it adds elements that otherwise wouldn’t have been thought of in the first place. A good example of this is the Crumb documentary… when he draws he says he uses photo references for cities because you can’t make up a lot of things that exist… even something as simple as a light pole has a lot going into it visually/ complex parts.

I think Luke starts out not wanting to train Rey because he believes he should be the last Jedi. I think balancing the force is part of that too but I don’t think they are going to kill off the Jedi.

No. There’s still hope. TFA, I still believe, will ultimately be regarded as the soulless, entertaining, vacuous, focus group corporate piece of shit it truly is, but we don’t know enough about this film yet to say that. Rian has made movies so far that have a central idea, that MEAN something. Abrams and his bullshit ‘mystery box’ and artless aping of his betters is gone now, and there’s a chance something interesting can be salvaged out of this new generation of SW. God, I hate to admit it, but I’m starting to understand where Trek nerds were coming from once Roddenberry had been removed and their franchise became a corporate meat grinder. Help us Lucas-Wan, you’re our only hope.

The light and dark.. the island shots as great as they look could be a holiday video, not very alien. Watch OT trailers, I was so excited waiting for the films back then. Now, trying to be clever, mis direction, tease can leave one feeling frustratingly annoyed. OT trailers didn’t give the story away but gave us lots to look forward to and wonder what would happen. It may be the case with so many people now involved wanting, individual ownership? They have missed the biggest movie moment forever, we all wanted to see the big three together for one scene. Obviously no one knew leia would pass but Han is dead and it sounds as though Luke is depressed and writing off the Jedi which is the premis of the entire franchise.
Also on another note for future movies, JUST PICK THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE PART!
Don’t go for the political option which appears to be the current main priority.
Keep Star Wars STAR WARS it not a generic sci fi movie.

But your post implies that such wasn’t the case, and given how good Ridley was in that role, either you have no understanding of what “acting” is or you are writing to push your own “political agenda”.
Besides, there’s absolutely nothing “political” in the way Disney/LFL is managing and marketing the new movies: what they are doing is called “targeting a demographic”. They’re after money and it just so happens that being inclusive and diverse is a better choice, business wise.

Not saying anyone, yet, luckily both Rey and Jyn were cast and worked well, however far from the best characters in the movies.
My point is simply, men and women are different (get over it) just cast the right people for the part.
There are both great men and women actors. Think of the great movies, would they have been if you switched genders (both ways)

I have no idea what point you are trying to make. So far, they have cast all the right people (and Rey was easily the best character in TFA).

the trailer is not good! Hope the next one is better. If you have a star wars film, how can you fail in doing a good trailer?? Unless…you don’t want to reveal anything of worth. THAT is my comfort. Begun the wait has….

What about it is bad, exactly?

Good teasers only give you brief glimpses, they tease, they do not give you the best of the best shots and plot points of the film. This is the equivalent of the first teaser for TFA. If you go back and watch that again and compare it to the final movie, you realize that the really showed you only a tiny fraction of what you finally got in the film.

I should have taken notes the first time I saw the Force Awakens Teaser, because I’m pretty sure I had the same response which was, alright, it’s… interesting. I questioned this BB-8 droid right off the bat and wasn’t real sure I was actually alright with TFA teaser. I remember watching it again and feeling a little better and then watching it again and getting more and more excited each time I watched it. I would say, the same is happening with The Last Jedi. First time I wasn’t thrilled but interested, second time, I was a little more intrigued, after a night’s sleep, I watched it again and I now find myself becoming more and more intrigued and excited about the prospects. I came to the realization that it’s a teaser, not even a trailer, so it’s there specifically to tease. We’ll see how I feel when I see the trailer, which I think on first watch for The Force Awakens, I was pretty excited for.
