Star Wars: Han Solo Begins Principal Photography!

Just minutes after we posted the article about Donald Glover, “Han Solo” director Christopher Miller posted on Twitter a photo confirming that principal photography for the movie has officially begun….

Great choice of words. Han always shoots first.

We at SWNN wish all the best of luck to the cast and crew during the filming process and beyond that. Exciting times for all Star Wars fans – right now 3 Star Wars movies are in active development. 🙂

Han Solo: A Star Wars Story is set for release on May 25, 2018. The movie will be directed by the duo Christopher Miller and Phil Lord and will tell an origin story about Han Solo and Chewie, which is expected to take place 10 years before the events of “A New Hope”. George Lucas developed some ideas for the story in the past, and in 2012 Lawrence Kasdan was brought in to write the script together with his son Jon.

Kathleen Kennedy described that the “Han Solo” story will have a western/heist feel. The movie also stars Alden Ehrenreich as young Han Solo, as well as Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson in an unknown roles.

    Awesome! Solo

I really hope that this movie builds on the main story arc, rather than being a complete side story. Rogue One enhanced episode 4. If the Han Solo movie can enhance the rest of the series, then great, but right now I kind of like the mystique of not knowing much about Han Solo.

I’m hoping for more side stories that ARE side stories. There’s a whole galaxy out there that the saga films don’t talk about, and it can make for some interesting movies.

It will probably have things that are vaguely referenced to in the OT.

I agree. I don’t mind a few touchstones to the OT, but there has to be plenty of room for some solid and truly stand-alone stories.

    Star wars red cup?
Also, considering the resemblance even Mark Hamill admitted with Sebastian Stan, I today came up with an interesting plot for a Spin off set in post-ROTJ, that could potentially include the Battle of Jakku, a duel between Luke and an inquisitor, possibly Thrawn (if he’s not killed off in the canon timeline earlier), and, depending kn the success of Alden’s portrayal, Han Solo. I think it might be a good idea because it would have many tie-ins between ROTJ, TFA and also the rest of the Canon.

If it’s post RotJ how could Alden portray Han, he’d have to be ~ 20 years older than he is portrayed in the Han Solo Spinoff. While I’m willing to suspend disbelief for a younger version of solo, there’s no way I would buy Alden as Han any age after the start of the Original Trilogy.

He will be playing Han in his early 20s, Han was in his early 30s in ANH.

Yes, and in his 40s, during the POST-Return Of The Jedi era, which is what LastOfTheDeji and Clone11038 were talking about. Thus,

By the time this project could be even considered by LFL, about a decade from now, he’ll be older; also, this is a mere idea I had. Probably, if I won’t accept Alden in the spin off, I will reconsider some aspects of the movie idea.

Solo makes a cheap, disposable plastic cup that rednecks and obnoxious college kids love to drink cheap, watery beer out of.

So, you’re not really missing anything.

Does anyone understand the clapboard specs? Does 6k mean they are shooting digitally, rather than on film like the other 3 movies did?

yes but who cares as long as the movie is good. Digital does not mean a bad thing and the vast majority of movies you watch are now shot on digital cameras. Rogue One was shot on the Arri Alexa 65 which is a 6k digital camera. Likely the same camera.

I’m going to watch it. I’m pretty sure it will be good. But we still don’t need this movie…

Rogue One really discouraged my interest in the spin off films, unfortunately. Sadly, I doubt this film will rekindle it.

Much better than TFA to me at least.

I realize that most people seem to love RO, and I am probably in the minority here. And I am not just trying to slam on the film for the sake of slamming on it. I think RO was a really good action movie, if it was in no way associated with the Star Wars universe. But as part of the SW franchise, I felt it lacked the soul of a SW movie, what essentially makes SW SW, if you get my drift. It was exciting to watch the first time, but I don’t feel the draw to watch it over and over again like the other SW films, including TFA. Just my personal opinion.

And what would be that soul if I may ask? Isn’t Star Wars about gathering together in the darkest of times? Fighting the evil in an epic quest?

It played things a BIT safe as far as leaning on the familiar, but I think it was the smart move for the first anthology film. It also feels like there was a great deal of re-jigging after principle photography, but I think it’s a more satisfying film than TFA. If they’ve given Lord and Miller some leeway to ake their movie, this may be a bunch of fun.

          Shocker, you contradict yourself.

Rogue One did more than lean on the familiar. It was the familiar. To the point of resurrecting dead actors.

Episode VII did the same damn thing, and you still complain about it.

Huh. If the movie begins filming now instead of in March, then I guess that they might not be delaying the movie to December after all.

I hope not. I could see him just coldly blow someone away, but I hope they don’t feel a need to references iconic Han moments.

Coldly blowing someone away is another way to say “shot first”. I’m not sure if you’re saying you hope for that or not, but it’s happening either way.

Really curious how they are going to handle Han’s un-PC habits. Is he going to be the same sexist character from ANH or are they going to show how he got that way? “If we can avoid any female advice then I think we can get out of here”. Also if they are going to downplay the fact that he was basically a drug dealer in the SW universe?

I’ll just point out that he was MUCH more sexist originally. Check out the deleted scenes of Empire and Jedi, where we get to hear such zingers as “nobody’s taught you how to be a woman”.

I don’t think they need to tie this in with any existing story, it could be a cool adventure story where Han has to transport some dodgy stuff for Jabba and avoid the Empire at the same time.
