And, there we have more Social Justice from Mark Ellis and the rest. Really getting sick of it all. You should choose directors / actors by their capabilities, and maybe personalities ( Harrison Ford’s really helped Han Solo’s character a lot ), but not by their skin colour, what they have in between their legs, or where they place their junk at night.

I highly doubt Lucasfilm are going to choose someone they think isn’t capable. The diversity thing is a money making strategy as is hiring good directors.

Nobody’s said they’re going to hire anyone unqualified. In fact they’ve explicitly said they’re looking for someone at the right point in their career.

No, that is not what I’m saying.
You see, in the past 2 trilogies, we have had white male main characters, And many star wars fans are used to this, this is their norm for star wars. However, in 2 consecutive years, we got 2 female leads, and a black stormtrooper, and many people were indeed shocked.
Look, I have nothing against diversity. After all, star wars takes place in a huge galaxy, so it would be normal to see a wide variety ie creatures and ethnicities, but Disney shouldn’t change everything so drastically, as many fans are just, used to the white male.
And if I remember correctly ( correct me if I’m wrong) J J Abrams choose John Boyega based in his ethnicities, and not acting talent ( well, of course he looked at his acting skills, butmostly ethnicity) which is what really worries me

Yes, so you think it should be white washed. Got you.

Two movies with TWO female leads and a black man back to back is just TOO much for Star Wars fans to handle.

You have no evidence that Boyega was cast because he was black. Sorry it’s so distracting for you to see a diverse cast on the screen.

wow. Congratulations on the election. You shouldnt express this so openly you havnt burned America down yet.

Dont really get why white people need to look at other white people in their Nazi flavored Space Comic movies… or why Disney would also want that or think thats how you make a billion dollars… They need to grow their bizness.

You also need to fucking grow. What you wrote is less cro magnon than it is indicative of your social consciousness and world view. Or in your case suburban view. That should shame you. My guess is your job and family probably already do that for you … so why pile on – am i right ?

But seriously bring on the blacks, gays and girls please. But no jews. Im kidding. I meant Arabs… Fuck the audience being comfortable – so long as you give them the red meat they clamor for. Disney will grow the buisness the same way they have in the cartoons…. Princess and Frog ? Mulan…. ???

Youre painfully ignorant and embarassing – sad white friend.

The ‘bacta tank’ scene from the teaser trailer, perhaps it’s not a bacta tank:
    Catalyst heavily emphasis kyber chrstals
Jedha is a planet rich in kyber crystals
The Death Star’s main weapon is powered by kyber crystals

Just maybe it’s not a bacta tank, and instead the kyber crystals’ housing that powers the weapon.

However you’ve proven you’ve cared with your last post. Mr. “Well we can’t have so much diversity all at once, please slowly phase out white and male actors because Star Wars fans just can’t handle the change”.

No, what I care about is how they are making this whole diversity matter to seem like the holy grail of humanity’s advance. And to be honest, a movie can only ever take so much diversity and change, as at some point, the movie no longer feels like the movie it’s supposed to be. Now, this wasn’t the case with tfa, as it was the first movie in the reboot franchise, but the all-of-a-sudden diversity wave can, and if this wave continues, will negate the overall star wars-ey feeling, as it will be an overflow of diversity, and that original “kick-ass princess Leia cool” feeling won’t be there anymore.

And in the end, I am just expressing my opinion against mark Ellis’ pro-pc and social justice approach towards star wars.

They said “Hey we want to have a woman director” “Hey we want a more diverse cast” and then you literally whine and cry about it..why? You can ignore it, never think or hear about it again, and it’s over.

They have the right to cast the film in any way they say fit, if they decide to be progressive about it and include more genders then just males and more ethnicity’s than Caucasian, they can do that.

But right now you sound like the white genocide people who came onto this forum when it was revealed there was black Stormtrooper for VII.

“If you don’t cast more white people, Star Wars isn’t Star Wars anymore”

I’m not actually going to talk to you anymore, because I can’t combat willful ignorance at this level.

I understand your position. At the end of the day the US box office is still the prime focus for success, and like it or not the main demographic is still male and white. This and the fact no-one likes to have obvious politically correct statements forced upon them. Look at the new Ghostbusters, it has forced home how an all female lead would be funny and if you disagreed you must be sexist.

Personally if a director is talented and can bring something to the film they are working on gender doesn’t matter, but to say we want a female director is just wrong.

Rey was a perfect character to have against Han Solo and Kylo, as for R1 we will have to see if its the right choice, so far I’m in.

        • November 25, 2016 at 12:45 am
          Permalink

Except the people who disagreed about Ghostbusters were being sexist for the most part. Funny thing is, diversity wasn’t the reason for the all female cast.

A new ghostbusters had been in development he’ll for years. When a concept that was fresh enough for studio execs came along, an all woman cast, it was green lit.

Then when the trailer came out white males came out in droves to complain even though Sony didn’t have a Kathleen Kennedy out front with a clenched fist shouting “girl power”.

In response to the rampant sexist statements hurled at the cast and crew the film adopted a pro diversity stance.

It was the insecurity of angry white men that initiated the entire fiasco.

This conversation is a microcosm of it. White males here are taking Kennedy’s statement and blowing it way out of proportion.

I’m a white dude yet never feel threatened about embracing change or acknowledging the existence of heterosexual white male privilege. I have and continue to benefit from it even when I don’t want it.

White male privilege in the US exists. It doesn’t show that white people are bad, it shows they are the majority and being a white heterosexual in the US affords you more opportunity than anyone else in the country.

The problem is when people in my country act like that isn’t the case, because they don’t know better then get offended by the fact that someone else insists it exists.

I don’t know what it’s like in your country, so I can’t and won’t share an opinion on it.

The new Ghostbusters is a bad film, even if it wasn’t an all female crew. Just look at the original teaser, it was coming over as a sequel/soft reboot with the whole thing of showing the original Fire Station and saying the world was saved x amount of years ago. It gave out mixed messages from the start.

Honestly I don’t know why you label people as sexist just because their opinion is different. All that was said by the OP was that talent and expertise should come before colour or sex. I agree with that statement, its totally neutral and not sexist or racist. I didn’t vote Trump, not being an American citizen, and wouldn’t in my dreams even if I was. However, with people accusing people so extremely of being sexist and racist at the drop of the hat its obviously a protest vote.

I have, and your basically saying people with a different opinion are sexist or racist. There will no doubt be an element of truth, as minorities in both sides of the argument are as guilty as each other. However, the original statement of talent and skill should come before a need for diversity in colour or sex is neutral.

I don’t believe angry white males started the fiasco that was Ghostbusters. The majority would of been angry at a reboot, with or without an all female cast. However the studio used the female cast as an excuse to shout down those with concerns as sexist. Had it been a soft reboot in the form of a continuation of the originals it would of worked far better. I lost interest once it was finally revealed as a complete reboot.

The statements they make are sexist, and they’re being sexist or racist by making those statements.

Sorry, but the scape goat argument “This is my opinion, it isn’t sexism” doesn’t make something you say not sexist.

And I’m sorry you don’t believe easily re-searchable facts.

Your reply: “By your reasoning then everything should remain white washed”

I’m not saying some of the other stuff that’s been said in the thread isn’t sexist or racist. But how is it white washing when all he asked for at this point was for choices to be made by talent? Of course if a role is for a female/coloured/white/asian, or whatever, then you get the most talented person you can. I personally don’t care if Finn and Poe become more than friends, great new direction, but don’t do it just for the sake of appealing to minority groups.

What fact are you referring, the Ghostbusters? Yes the fan reaction at the start killed it, but its not because of sexist feelings. How many were like me, onboard until it was revealed as a total reboot? Maybe unsure because it was another reboot? There are so many other reasons than being sexist, though note I’m not saying it wasn’t one of them. I’m just saying don’t tarnish everyone with the same brush, otherwise your as bad as those you attack.

You still continuing with talking gibberish? Resulting to childish ways because you can’t answer a simple basic question. Not still stalking me are you?

You were interesting at first, but as with all your ilk, you begin to become quite boring a few days in when you run out of original material to attempt to insult or rile me up.

Man, how many months did you wait to confront me? And this was all you had? Pffft.

Boring yet still you reply??? Brilliant.

I’m not calling you out, you can hide all you like and stamp on people with your moral high ground all you like, I’m not bothered. Act tough and clever, and I’m still not really bothered.

Said earlier I’m was now baiting you for fun to see how you like it and you are still falling for it – LOL

The repetition is really starting to kill me. If you’re going to continue to try to have the last word, why don’t you do it not saying the same thing you have the past..however many times you’ve said.

Baiting. Internet tough guy. Calling out. Hiding. Speaking down to you and everyone around me because I somehow think I’m intellectually superior. Completely whiffing on a Princess Bride Reference.

Yeah. It got boring a while ago. And you just can’t let it slide because you have a hard on for me. And now this whole “Oh I’m just here to mess with you and you’re letting me!” routine makes it even more pathetic.

This started out as a decent conversation and you’ve let it devolve into something Whedonslisp would perform. Bravo. You don’t get sadder than that guy.

I believe I said several posts earlier I was winding you up, baiting you as you do others with attitude. The term pot-kettle-black was spot on, but then I need to go to such measures – seems to be working very well.

I asked what was racist on that first post simple because that was the post you called out on, the others I’ve not bothered to read and I’ll not take your word on what was said, who would trust your word?

I’m not sure why you have such an attitude, maybe bullied or abused as a kid, I don’t really care. Maybe you are a kid, in which its kinda of sad, but in either case you need professional help. You might think I’m using a false name, whatever, but I’ve no need to hide behind another and act with attitude and then take offence when the flack comes back.

I bet you don’t speak to people on the street with your attitude, of course you don’t, its safer to do so on the internet. I’m glad its boring and you think I’ve wasted my time, even though you’ve been doing the same. I’ve happily filled in posts as a distraction to watching kids tv for the most part, so thanks for that at least. Also rather sad you think I’ve been after the last word when even after my admission of baiting earlier you still keep coming back, its almost as if that attitude you can’t control is desperately in need to have the last word………

Well I’m calling it a day. Read what you will.

I do regret some of the things I’ve said and I think we both over reacted in some areas. I admit I don’t like the attitude that some posts portray, seeing a lot as simply not needed between adults, and I’ve had fun for the most part in trying to get this through to you. In your eyes this might be right or wrong, but its the way it went down.

Probably could of had a good banter over a pint or two in a different time and place, walking away to agree to disagree.

I agree. There was only one actress who nailed the humor the rest kind of just stood there. Which was sad, based on the casting I did have high hopes. The first trailer told me no though. Still, I went to see it.

See. This is exactly where youve been misled. Human Advancement is hung up on how we percieve those we think are different from us and we see that difference most often via Race and Gender… do you not see that ? American culture and our Media (genre not buisness) are tasked with reflecting ourselves back to us in the most honest manifestation of that idea. And tthe rubber meets the road in only one place in film – Casting. No more white people movies. Its over man. Not even Trump can bring back that train. Disney and others arent casting for fucking flavor dipshit – they trying t o make art and to make art inherently you have to change things… Its a recipe but thankfully not your fucking receipe.
