In an interview with IGN (via MakingStarWars), the veteran Danish actor was asked about Galen Erso’s moral weight of building the Death Star and the burden and guilt he carries with him.

“He’s not in a super nice position. So, I mean, leaving is a big word. I mean he didn’t really have a choice. But, I think he’s the most guilty man in the world and I think that’s been very hard to cope with. But, if there was a way out of there, he would have taken it.”

I am pretty sure this will be the case:
He is taken from Empire to work on Death Star, he worked on it for a long time, than he figured out he is not doing the right thing (maybe he already knew from the beginning it will have power to destroy planets) so he told some imperials they need to put a hole on the top because it needs that hole so it can properly work, but only he knew that hole is leading to the main reactor. He made Death Star plans and he contacted Rebellion that he has a plans how that weapon could be destroyed, and Rebellion saved his daughter because they need her to lead them to him. At the end many of them will die trying to get the plans, because plans are on planet Scarrif, in Imperial base, they will get in masked as Imperials, they will find Galen Erso, he will give them plans, many of them will die trying to escape, but some of them will escape with the plans, and Krennic will kill Galen Erso for betraying them, and Vader will kill Krennic, because that’s Vader.
