Diego Luna: Rogue One is Told Through The Eyes of Jyn Erso. The Movie’s Promotion Will Start From Mexico!
The November issue of the Mexican edition of Vanity Fair has a very interesting and informative interview with Mexican native Diego Luna who plays Captain Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The actor spoke about the Rogue One premiere and how the movie is told through the eyes of Jyn Erso, while also revealing several other interesting bits about the movie. Read on for the details…
The quotes in this article has been translated from Spanish. We apologize for any slight inaccuracies.
First, the actor revealed that the movie will start its promotion from Mexico. Luna, together with several other actors and director Gareth Edwards, will be in Mexico for 3-4 days for the movie’s premiere (although the promotion will start there the official premiere will probably be again in LA a few days later):
Everything starts in Mexico, we will be here for three or four days.
He also spoke how he got the role:
I didn’t see it coming. I was so excited and I needed some time to relax and realize what happened. When I went to the set, I wanted to take a picture of everything. The shooting was really intense.
The fans can expect lots of references and Easter eggs to other Star Wars films in Rogue One. He even mentioned that there will be tributes to several famous characters from the galaxy far, far away:
The movie is full of references, small tributes and characters that fall in this chronology of events.
Diego revealed the interesting fact that the movie’s story is told through the eyes of the main protagonist Jyn Erso:
The story in the movie is seen through the eyes of Jyn Erso.
The magazine mentions that Gareth Edwards met with Diego and his agent on a Sunday at 6 pm in a restaurant. At first, he didn’t knew the reason for the appointment. Gareth had some strict rules during the meeting – nobody could use his cell phone and they couldn’t share with anyone the reason for this meeting. When someone was passing by them in the restaurant, Gareth was closing his laptop hiding what he was showing them. The meeting went on for 4 1/2 hours.
He felt immediately identified with the description of Cassian Andor as “A captain from the intelligence who used to be always in the fight.”
“I wanted to make my character more natural and realistic. Although people expect the tone of the film to be fantasy, it actually is quite the contrary. It’s an intimate story that feels real.
Luna also refers to Rogue One as a movie about the people from the Star Wars galaxy.
I think of all the Star Wars films released so far, Rogue One is the most real one, which is about the people. The characters are very similar to us. They are heroes with no powers. What they have is a conviction and desire to change reality.
The Mexican actor revealed that many of the explosions in the movie are real and some of the actors actually suffered some serious injuries. Diego himself injured his eyes very badly while filming an action sequence:
I took a lot of injuries. My chest still hurts a lot. There are some accidents that will actually end up in the final cut of the film. In a scene where we were running against a strong wind a badly hurt my cornea while trying to remove some debris from my eye. I used a patch during the last days of filming.
The film was in develeopment for 7 months, and Diego had to move to London where they had filmed all of the Star Wars movies.
There are many different people of all races and settings. They toured several places like islands. There are plenty of water and desert settings in the movie. A bit of everything. The film looks like one of those jokes where you have a German, a Chinese, a Japanese and a Mexican …
Before concluding, Diego also spoke about the new droid K-2SO and actor Alan Tudyk:
He was raised on stilts and dressed in pajamas with dots everywhere, quite ridiculous and an extension of mechanical arms and hands.
The magazine is on sale from today. Special thanks to PrensaImperial for finding the article and sending some of the photos, including the title image that I don’t think we’ve seen before.
