Rebels

This week on our Star Wars Weekly Buzz:
Kylo Ren visits a Star Wars convention, Pablo’s weekly Tweets, Vader reference reportedly almost cut from BTTF, Kristian Harloff sits down with Andi Gutierrez of the ‘The Star Wars Show, Del Rey re-releases ‘Thrawn Trilogy’ with new covers on paperback, actor Jerry Seinfeld isn’t so serious and much, much more…

We kick this week with this curious post by John Boyega on Instagram:

A photo posted by BOYEGA (@jboyega_) on

The painting in the background is particularly interesting. It’s obvious that Boyega with a hood feels very Star Wars-ey. But do we really think that Boyega will reveal his appearance from Episode VIII just like that? I highly doubt it.

But who knows? Maybe it’s a hint? Actually this robe looks more like a Jedi robe. What do you think?

StarWars.com has just released new preview of Star Wars Rebels Season Three, featuring Grand Admiral Thrawn and his plan to destroy the Ghost crew.

The official StarWars youtube page has a special look behind the scenes with the talented creators of the Go Rogue stop-motion shorts, which first part we showed you yesterday.

Our friend Nick Hedenbeck from Star Wars Alert has done it again! Another brilliant mash-up trailer. The Rogue Seven – A Magnificent Star Wars Story is a mashup trailer between The Magnificent Seven and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:

DEL REY to reissue the popular ‘Thrawn Trilogy’ with all-new Covers

Jedi-Bibliothek Via Edelweiss, notes that Del Rey has recently announced new book covers for the ‘Thrawn Trilogy’ by Timothy Zahn. The reissues of the classic SWEU novels will be available in paperback form on September 27, 2016. The covers connect to create one cover for the entire trilogy when put side by side (see title image). Note: Since these reprints are under the same ISBN , there is no pre-order links, however check Amazon.com for more details.

Star Wars Collects (@powers_douglas) spots what appears to be a new ‘Shoretrooper’ POP figure on this weeks ‘The Star Wars show’!
Nice find…

This was just hours before the official Pops line for Rogue One was revealed:

“Darth Vader from Vulcan” sequence in the film in the 1985 film ‘Back to the Future’ was nearly cut by a studio executive.

IMDb has two very interesting videos that introduce you to actors Alden Ehrenreich and Riz Ahmed, if you’re not familiar with their work:

What happened when Kylo visited the world’s biggest Star Wars convention?

from IGN

Jedi Council’s Kristian Harloff chats with Andi Gutierrez, co-host of Lucasfilm’s new ‘The Star Wars Show!’

Also, this week on The Star Wars After Show Peter Townley sits down with Lucasfilm employees and Star Wars fans Dan Brooks, Matt Martin, and Lucas Seastrom to talk about their favorite Star Wars toys of all-time, chat about the different droids in the Star Wars galaxy, and more!

Some sad news. RIP Michael Leader (via @starwarsfacts_).

Sad

Is he serious?

In a recent interview with the The Hollywood Reporter, Jerry Seinfeld had a really funny idea for a Star Wars character he could play. Best known for his role in the award winning hit TV series ‘Seinfeld’, the actor had this to say…

I watch a lot of Star Wars because of my kids. And I thought, if I was in Star Wars, maybe instead of Darth Sidious I could be Areyouserious? … ‘You want to attack an entire planet? Seriously?’ I’d be on the dark side. I’d be fine with that.

Sooo…a studio exec didn’t think the title “Back to the Future” was “wonderful” enough, so he suggested the brilliant title “Space Man from Pluto.” Wow. Just…wow.

Because “Space Man From Pluto” doesn’t make it sound like a genre picture.

Everyone was coked out of their minds in the 80s but even so…

Well that doesn’t sound like a genre picture associated with time travel to me. It sounds like an old 50s Sci-Fi film where an alien humanoid from Pluto visits Earth.

Either way, I prefer the Back to the Future title more, although I may be biased. It’s hard to imagine being the producer and thinking about what will make this movie the best as it can be because we all have a little something called hindsight bias to effect our judgement.

He feared “Back to the Future” being labeled a generic “genre” movie, that being a time-line/time-travel movie.

I see where he was going with his ideas and tried to consider the “future” of the film, (See what I did there) 😉 However, I think he vastly underestimated the potential of the title “Back to the Future” too.

Can you imagine if the title was switched from Back to the Future to Space Man From Pluto???

I mean, the movie would still be good.

        I didn’t say Jyn.

I am talking about the tweets where Pablo said Rey is Krennic’s daughter, and then complained about not being believed. Where did that come from, and is he just trolling? I wasn’t aware of EW revealing anything related to Rey’s parentage, so his comments are confusing.

I’m sorry, I thought you meant Jyn. I have no idea where Pablo got the idea or where other people got the idea that Krennic is Rey’s dad. At this point only the Lucasfilm story group and people involved with the characters know.

I think people are just guessing like crazy, because they can, even if it doesn’t make sense.

If they do need a character to act as a love interest for Luke, then they may bring her back in, just like Thrawn for Rebels. However, I can’t see them making her nearly as important of a character as she was in Legends.

about the Star destroyer from the R1 trailer – it’s already been confirmed by the ILM crew that it’s CGI – but that they were of course careful to make it look like a model from ANH. watch ILM crew R1 trailer fan reaction – reaction.

Yup. Spectacular CGI, but CGI. When I saw it in the teaser I just kept going “I KNOW that’s not a miniature, just logistically, but dddaaaaaaayum….”

it really is something – i’m really impressed. And i work in CGI so i have a pretty good idea about the insane amount or work that went into that kinda of detailed model. Its modeled in Maya most likely and likely rendered in Arnold as well.

Yeah, I was a Max guy before I switched to Maya. Preferred modelling in Max, but much preferred working in Maya overall. Although, based on my, now years out of date knowlege, I would presume ILM has written their own render engine that they employ.

Funny how some fans react to that star destroyer. If it’s CG but looks as realistic as possible people would hate it… But if it’s CG but looks like a little plastic model, people love it.

            Either way it’s still CG.

I like things that look realistic and believable. If CG has advanced to the point where we cannot distinguish it from traditional models, then I have no problem with it being digital. The believability of the original models came from the lighting, motion blur and shadows that were cast as they were photographed on film as tangible objects. They did not look like plastic models, they looked like convincing vehicles that could fly in space. CG ships originally had a hard time duplicating that realism and came across as unconvincing, with a fake digital look to them. But It looks as though the technology has improved to the point where they can now successfully pull it off, so more power to them.

Of these two photos I personally prefer the former.

Like you said there’s just the little details involving the models that make them seem more believable.

Granted the RoTS one is still pretty good, much busier, has more to render, more action, but it doesn’t hold up quite as well as the RoTJ one in my opinion. It looks more cartoony/stylized much like a screen from a Clone Wars episode.

I’m glad that ILM has managed to progress CGI to the point where even us hardcore attention to detail enthusiasts have to strain to tell the difference between a CGI render and an actual model.

… and don’t forget the old style cameras required adjusting film speed, focal depth, etc, to help sell the idea that it’s a huge spaceship and not a tiny plastic kit-bashed model…. *that* was what ILM was famous for back in the day…. :o)

And the fact that the OT was not filmed in such high resolution as the prequels, in which every pimple on an actor’s face could be seen. If Lucas had filmed 4-6 digitally, I feel that many would not be praising the special effects as much.

Not exactly accurate. 35mm captures a hell of a lot of detail, but creating positives and projection prints from the camera negs using photo-chem processes means you get softer and softer the further removed from the camera negs you are. By the time those films were in theaters in front of us back in the day, we were seeing much, much softer images than what was captured. Going back to properly restored negs, with a quality scan would give you a new digital master of the original films that would be startling in the detail it revealed. The effects work would need to be digitally composited to avoid looking like utter poop (as ILM would have introduced generational loss at the source for every compositing pass they had to do on a shot), but fortunately that work WAS done for the SEs. Not, sadly, at anything above 1080p, but it would still be serviceable.

I you judge in a more strict way, the image from epIII is more acurate to a “real” thing in every way, begining with lighting, thats one of the beauties of CGI, the simulation. With the first image you have the lighting from a lamp, not a real o simulated sun, and looks great too.

Both look great to me, but if you ask wich one looks more realistic, definetely the second image, from epIII. And I say “realistic” and not “real” for obvious reasons, people confuse that a lot.

You know the first image was created with real objects, that somehow makes you think is better or that look “more real”, even if not, in some cases.

It’s a matter more, I think, of what looks right for Star Wars. It’s got it’s own visual language, and a very distinct feeling. Part of (only part of) what doesn’t work so well for me about TFA is that none of the photography FEELS right to me, including how they approached the look of effects shots. There is NO arguing however that by everything we’ve seen, including that ISD shot in particular, ILM has absolutely nailed the classic SW look on this film, while taking full advantage of working digitally.

That shot of the shadow w/ the DS dish + the Star Destroyer is REALLY well-done! The massive relative scale(s) of a Star Destroyer against a ‘That’s no Moon’ is SO cool. Really excited to see R1 in December…

Hmmm…voting CGI on the destroyer. It’s beautifully done, but ILM no longer has a model department, and unless they’ve paid someone to build another 8 footer, some of the really lacey details along the brim trench would be really too small to build practically. It’s stunning though – detail, texturing and lighting, you couldn’t ask for them to have done more with an OT style destroyer.
