I suppose because of the Death Star dish controversy, we’ll just have to go and make Episode III non-canon, and the whole prequel trilogy for that matter.

    Oh, well!

It will never be that easy. Here’s some booze to help you forget that the prequels exist, though.

Millennials will be the ruling party of the world soon. You’ll see. Your reign of influence on society is coming to an end. Out with the old and in with the new.

(And any Millennial that thinks otherwise of what I just said is just proving to be a pretentious contrarian hipster who feels good to be non-conforming to their generation and prefers to act all “vintage”; probably prefers vinyl records to CD’s or digital music files as well).

        Hey Marsha,
There’s a simple solution if you don’t like the jokes.
IGNORE THEM. It’s not hard to do.
Turn down the oversensitive indignation a few notches and lighten up, for crying out loud. Just because you don’t like the post, doesn’t mean you can have it banned.

Going against an official mandate? That sounds like you’re saying I’m not allowed to question some dictatorial regime. You’d fit in well with the Empire. Humorless, controlling, and against free expression.

It has always been a little strange that they could build Death Star II in just a few years when it took them twenty years to build the first one. George Lucas in some commentary said something to the effect that the Empire had problems with “unions”, which makes me think that the barely takes his own creation seriously at all. I would HATE being the union leader who tried to stand up to Palpatine!

What could make good sense is that they encountered some grave, unforseen engineering problem during the making of the first Death Star. Perhaps the basic structure was completed in five years or so, but then the damn thing wouldn’t work! Hidalgo seems to suggest that they had to dismantle the canon and install a new one. I wonder if Mads Mikkelsen’s character (supposedly one “Galen”) may not be a brilliant scientist/engineer who finally solves the problem and gets the Death Star to work after a ca. 15-year delay. He has stated that his character is not a villain, so perhaps he will emerge as a sort of Oppenheimer-like figure, detesting his own invention. Maybe he will ultimately be instrumental in getting the Death Star plans to the Rebellion, likely at the cost of his own life.

Of course, when the Empire built the Death Star II, the engineering problem had been solved and there was no delay. Just build another one and plug up that darn thermal exhaust port!

I think this is the correct answer. The first was a prototype as far as I’m concerned, which also explains away the fact that it’s a lot larger.

Like in our world, I’m betting the labor unions have a heavy mob influence (Ie: Black Sun) who’s help the Empire clearly needed in the early days. I know Shadows Of The Empire is no longer canon anymore but it gives you an idea of the complicated internal politics of holding a galactic dictatorship together.

just like in real life, you learn a lot from a first attempt. I though his answer made prefect sense. A year still seems farfetched though.

I don’t know why he didn’t just say they started building it before the first one was completed. There was a line in the movie ‘contact’ about the big star-gate thing they were building to the effect of ‘why build one, when you can build two for twice the cost!’

i don’t like the whole lightbulb/socket thing, i think i better explanation is that what you see in episode 3 is temporary supports while the rest of the death star is being built, that are than removed when you bring in the laser.

Pablo said that the cannon wasn’t the first one installed. I’m not sure that it was a socket, either. The first cannon never worked, so they took it out, leaving a socket. This part is true. They built the final cannon off site and installed it once it was ready. I can’t remember the source for any of this. It’s probably EU, but there is always some truth to legends (Yeah, I said it). The second death star’s cannon, may have already been in the works before the first one was installed. I’m hoping to see some Easter egg in Rogue One that shows this.

It doesn’t mean its a still from footage, publicity shot or picture from between takes. But, I would be surprised if there was no Zuvio footage as for a background alien to have a name/character/action figure that we were made aware of before the movie release seems to hint at something more.

Exactly. Earlier, here were reports on how Zuvio’s extended scenes were of him and his militia fighting with Rey against Unkar’s thugs. So saying that there was no Zuvio footage is total BS.

To be honest, I’m gonna let the whole “DS build-time discrepency” thing slide; the Death Star always felt out of place and shoe-horned into the PT. Having it alluded to in AOTC felt kinda’ pointless, and having it shown at the end of ROTS wasn’t necessary either.

    • April 17, 2016 at 9:04 am
      Permalink

Don’t forget TPM…blowing up the death ray or big guns was always a staple in old Superman, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers serials. AOTC had its Big Guns blown up too. Now What about Empire could of I missed a DS or was it the only movie that didn’t have death ray seneros and big globes blowing up.
I think the Death Star size and time thing were a metaphor for Moore’s law:)

I hope Pablo doesn’t think he’s conducting potential damage control, because he needn’t. I don’t need him being the Canon Casebook Mediator for something that is to be conjecturally decisive by the audience. Art has no definitive answers. Let me decide and let people rant if they want to, boo hoo or oh well.
People who say others are not “getting” Star Wars, is a joke.
Mainly because everyone does or doesn’t, just ask them on different days and you will get different answers.
This isn’t Star Trek and no one needs to be Annie Wilkes.
Checking Sockets for continuity is asinine and just as is about explaining shades of grey.
I didn’t always agree with George Lucas conjectures on Star Wars, on what something represented because some things he did not intend on, they were realized by many after the fact from different points of view. I respect Lucas’s opinion and Pablo too; However, he being the head of the story group needs to go away. Allow for the Lucasfilm banner be judged as a whole.

Thrawn is a former member of the Blue Man Group, which is why he will not be a part of canon, at least not by the same name (and he won’t be blue). What a great idea. Just get a man, paint him blue, with red eyes, and bam, he’s an alien. Stupid.

Hmmm it seems like Pablo just makes this stuff up as he goes along. There’s not a answer for everything. It’s like hey what happened to vaders lightsaber? Oh some ewok has it now and uses it as a flashlight. But seriously wtf did happen to vaders lightsaber? Why does Kylo Ren not have it. It would have been cool if he used it against Rey’s/Lukes
