Star Wars Weekly Social Buzz!
This week we have less posts from the cast and crew, but again Pablo Hidalgo makes numerous clarifications on the Star Wars universe.
On the controversy of the Death Star dish being installed in the Rogue One teaser, although it has already been seen in place during Revenge of the Sith:
@hanburgundy77 that’s not the dish being built. It’s the socket for the dish.

@FreddyLovesKarl 1) It’s not twice as big. 2) They figured out the part that was taking so long.
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 8, 2016
@Gen_Kenobi896 @FreddyLovesKarl The 900 km figure fell apart during the making of the Haynes Guide. So we went back to the VFX size.

@KjamesN@starwars The socket frame was there. The cannon wasn’t. And this is not the first cannon being laid in. It was noticed. Discussed

On Darth Plagueis:
@moribito2 It never came up.

On the color of the Star Destroyers in the R1 teaser:
@HawksFan281 What color do you think they are in ANH?
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 8, 2016
.@HawksFan281 This feels like it can be the next Internet blue dress / white dress thing. pic.twitter.com/rPhBvb8ab7

On the Knights of Ren:
@JudeGore If they’re Force-users, sure. But we don’t know if they are.
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 8, 2016
@JudeGore Just Kylo. Snoke isn’t a KoR.

On how to pronounce AT-AT:
“Walker.” https://t.co/BMo1qBHkaU
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 8, 2016
@jedinews2010 Absolutely it is.
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 8, 2016
On fan’s favorite Constable Zuvio:
@iNathanMcKnight There was no Zuvio footage. He was only a background alien. He did not feature in any scenes.
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 9, 2016
On the characters being used in the standalone movies and if we can see them in the saga episodes:
@pablohidalgo so i guess we’re never getting obi-wan kenobi then..
— amazing amy (@fassbendy) April 9, 2016
@StarWarsFan93 @fassbendy I can’t keep people from jumping to whatever conclusions they want. 🙂
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 10, 2016
On Ben Mendelsohn’s character being Admiral Thrawn:
@nairmak_gren It’s like an unwanted pattern recognition mutation. These folks probably spot a pantheon of gods in tortilla shells.
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 10, 2016
On the EU and Mara Jade:
.@ARMeneely As with anything from the EU, if a storyteller had a compelling story to tell that fit with current continuity, it’s possible.
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 9, 2016
@mrs_moog @ARMeneely Well, she’s certainly not Luke’s wife. George never thought that to be the case.
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 9, 2016
@mrs_moog An exile / hermit?

@alexjmarty @maxpalas @MarissaTalchi the ship was designed for a scene where Rey, scrubbing some scrap, watches a family take off from Jakku
— Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) April 11, 2016
@alexjmarty @maxpalas @MarissaTalchi Until you see the front of the ship; they don’t look alike at all. 🙂

That’s it for this week. See you next Friday.
Founder of SWNN, MNN and The Cantina forums.
Born on April 24, 1980.
I suppose because of the Death Star dish controversy, we’ll just have to go and make Episode III non-canon, and the whole prequel trilogy for that matter.
Oh, well!
It will never be that easy. Here’s some booze to help you forget that the prequels exist, though.
I’m gonna need a whole barrel.
…and you’ve been reported for trying to rile people up and bait fans into an argument (also, for trying to go against an official mandate from Disney/Lucasfilm with your insinuation).
Your jokes are getting old and stale.
And people wonder why us Gen-Xers take the piss out of Millennials. You’d be fan-fucking-tastic in a wartime situation.
“Hey! You Vietnamese soldiers are getting reported for–”
*gets shot*
At least Marsha shot first in this version.
“There’s a piece of her here… and here… and some more here and a few bits over there and look, a bit more up in that tree over there”
Millennials will be the ruling party of the world soon. You’ll see. Your reign of influence on society is coming to an end. Out with the old and in with the new.
(And any Millennial that thinks otherwise of what I just said is just proving to be a pretentious contrarian hipster who feels good to be non-conforming to their generation and prefers to act all “vintage”; probably prefers vinyl records to CD’s or digital music files as well).
Yep, just like the baby-boomers that are running for office at the moment. I wonder what a world run by Millennials would be like? Nothing would get done because all of the reporting and offense taken.
And the fact they text people sitting <20' away instead walking their a$$es over and ENGAGING them…yeah, introverted & socially awkward will doubtless CHANGE THE WORLD
I could go on about this for hours but this is a Star Wars site goddammit. I have to get back to being told that having my childhood raped wasn’t such a bad thing and that Attack of the Clones IS a good film.
Sure…as soon as they move outta Ma’s basement & pay down 6-figures worth of college tuition. Should be any decade now!
Reported for using parenthesis! I don’t like parenthesis!
Everybody’s favorite Debbie Downer!
But her name’s Marsha…
Mad Mad Marsha
Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!
You’ve been reported for filing false reports and just being fucking rude and annoying. So there’s that.
no i think you suck and are never funny either – too
Lora, is that you?
think your claim of reporting is a falsehood, and therefore I’m reporting you for failing to correctly file a false report. I’m also reporting myself for the exact same infringement.
REPORT EVERYTHING!!
I’m reporting for duty…someone told me I was needed in the detention block….um…do I stand over here?

Hey Marsha,
There’s a simple solution if you don’t like the jokes.
IGNORE THEM. It’s not hard to do.
Turn down the oversensitive indignation a few notches and lighten up, for crying out loud. Just because you don’t like the post, doesn’t mean you can have it banned.
Going against an official mandate? That sounds like you’re saying I’m not allowed to question some dictatorial regime. You’d fit in well with the Empire. Humorless, controlling, and against free expression.
If you don’t like the prequels IGNORE THEM 🙂
I’d love nothing more. But they are forever tied to the ones I do like – hence the call for de-canonization.
I don’t like sand, but i can’t ignore it. It’s coarse and rough, and it gets everywhere. Not like in the OT, there everything is soft and smooth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YT5qGE4PIdI
Well that’s too bad.
*breaks out the balloons and steamers*
It has always been a little strange that they could build Death Star II in just a few years when it took them twenty years to build the first one. George Lucas in some commentary said something to the effect that the Empire had problems with “unions”, which makes me think that the barely takes his own creation seriously at all. I would HATE being the union leader who tried to stand up to Palpatine!
What could make good sense is that they encountered some grave, unforseen engineering problem during the making of the first Death Star. Perhaps the basic structure was completed in five years or so, but then the damn thing wouldn’t work! Hidalgo seems to suggest that they had to dismantle the canon and install a new one. I wonder if Mads Mikkelsen’s character (supposedly one “Galen”) may not be a brilliant scientist/engineer who finally solves the problem and gets the Death Star to work after a ca. 15-year delay. He has stated that his character is not a villain, so perhaps he will emerge as a sort of Oppenheimer-like figure, detesting his own invention. Maybe he will ultimately be instrumental in getting the Death Star plans to the Rebellion, likely at the cost of his own life.
Of course, when the Empire built the Death Star II, the engineering problem had been solved and there was no delay. Just build another one and plug up that darn thermal exhaust port!
I always explained it by saying they had already started construction of #2 before #1 went foom.
I think this is the correct answer. The first was a prototype as far as I’m concerned, which also explains away the fact that it’s a lot larger.
Like in our world, I’m betting the labor unions have a heavy mob influence (Ie: Black Sun) who’s help the Empire clearly needed in the early days. I know Shadows Of The Empire is no longer canon anymore but it gives you an idea of the complicated internal politics of holding a galactic dictatorship together.
just like in real life, you learn a lot from a first attempt. I though his answer made prefect sense. A year still seems farfetched though.
Dude….did you just watch ‘Clerks’? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQdDRrcAOjA
I don’t know why he didn’t just say they started building it before the first one was completed. There was a line in the movie ‘contact’ about the big star-gate thing they were building to the effect of ‘why build one, when you can build two for twice the cost!’
Look at the Lego version of Donnie Yen’s character: they decided to color his eyes blue, not white. Is he realy blind, or is he Arkanian? (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Arkanian)
So apparently ya’ll is no longer just a southern American thing. Thanks Daisy. 🙂
I think it’s become Internet slang now.
wait, what? Star Destroyers are grey! Not white! Right? RIGHT?!
I’m sure all the original toys/models etc were grey not white.
If not, that’s my childhood blown haha
The way the light hit them always makes them look grey, I believe.
No, that’s not possible! it’s always been a really light grey! No! NOOOOOOOOOOO
http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/random-ness/images/9/9f/Darth_vader_no.gif/revision/latest?cb=20120616003315
that I quoted 😉
Toys always have been grey https://img0.etsystatic.com/055/0/10519030/il_570xN.722699892_bglw.jpg
exactly
Oh, ha ha ha, Pablo! Yes, please, leverage a domestic abuse meme for your little Star Destroyer joke. That’s some funny, funny stuff right there.
Does this meme look like domestic abuse to you?
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a8/The_Dress_(viral_phenomenon).png
Because THAT’S the blue/white dress that he referred to.
Wait, Rey was watching a family take off? Well that would have been some nice context to actually, you know, appear in the film.
I can’t wait to meet the Knights Of Stimpy.
Apropos of nothing, I’m enjoying the heck out of ‘Knights of Sidonia’ right now – good stuff if you enjoy mecha anime like ‘Evangelion’…
Thanks for the recommend, I’m always in need of new ones.
I’m currently watching Free! – Eternal Summer –
I remember a time when the only SW buzz I heard were my own buzzing sounds as I ran through the garden with my Kenner speeder bike, making up post-Jedi tales. And now I can barely keep up. Also, the overwhelming sense of SW being a big deal again…I love it. I haven’t felt like this since ’83 and during the leadup to the special defections. Star Wars.. ye
i don’t like the whole lightbulb/socket thing, i think i better explanation is that what you see in episode 3 is temporary supports while the rest of the death star is being built, that are than removed when you bring in the laser.
how much more detailed of a description do you require? Imagine what you will.He gave a solid answer.
Exactly, and we didn’t need Pablo.
Pablo said that the cannon wasn’t the first one installed. I’m not sure that it was a socket, either. The first cannon never worked, so they took it out, leaving a socket. This part is true. They built the final cannon off site and installed it once it was ready. I can’t remember the source for any of this. It’s probably EU, but there is always some truth to legends (Yeah, I said it). The second death star’s cannon, may have already been in the works before the first one was installed. I’m hoping to see some Easter egg in Rogue One that shows this.
One other thing to consider on the fast construction of Death Star II is that it was never ever completed. https://youtu.be/QrNGsszunm0
Killing a ton of hapless contractors!
Sorry, Pablo is almost always full of it, no scenes for Zuvio, and this looking almost into the camera? http://img.lum.dolimg.com/v1/images/constable-zuvio_2814b373.jpeg?region=0%2C171%2C1560%2C781
It doesn’t mean its a still from footage, publicity shot or picture from between takes. But, I would be surprised if there was no Zuvio footage as for a background alien to have a name/character/action figure that we were made aware of before the movie release seems to hint at something more.
Exactly. Earlier, here were reports on how Zuvio’s extended scenes were of him and his militia fighting with Rey against Unkar’s thugs. So saying that there was no Zuvio footage is total BS.
To be honest, I’m gonna let the whole “DS build-time discrepency” thing slide; the Death Star always felt out of place and shoe-horned into the PT. Having it alluded to in AOTC felt kinda’ pointless, and having it shown at the end of ROTS wasn’t necessary either.
Don’t forget TPM…blowing up the death ray or big guns was always a staple in old Superman, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers serials. AOTC had its Big Guns blown up too. Now What about Empire could of I missed a DS or was it the only movie that didn’t have death ray seneros and big globes blowing up.
I think the Death Star size and time thing were a metaphor for Moore’s law:)
I hope Pablo doesn’t think he’s conducting potential damage control, because he needn’t. I don’t need him being the Canon Casebook Mediator for something that is to be conjecturally decisive by the audience. Art has no definitive answers. Let me decide and let people rant if they want to, boo hoo or oh well.
People who say others are not “getting” Star Wars, is a joke.
Mainly because everyone does or doesn’t, just ask them on different days and you will get different answers.
This isn’t Star Trek and no one needs to be Annie Wilkes.
Checking Sockets for continuity is asinine and just as is about explaining shades of grey.
I didn’t always agree with George Lucas conjectures on Star Wars, on what something represented because some things he did not intend on, they were realized by many after the fact from different points of view. I respect Lucas’s opinion and Pablo too; However, he being the head of the story group needs to go away. Allow for the Lucasfilm banner be judged as a whole.
The conversation involving TUD and Marsha is not making any sense at all.
Thrawn is a former member of the Blue Man Group, which is why he will not be a part of canon, at least not by the same name (and he won’t be blue). What a great idea. Just get a man, paint him blue, with red eyes, and bam, he’s an alien. Stupid.
Hmmm it seems like Pablo just makes this stuff up as he goes along. There’s not a answer for everything. It’s like hey what happened to vaders lightsaber? Oh some ewok has it now and uses it as a flashlight. But seriously wtf did happen to vaders lightsaber? Why does Kylo Ren not have it. It would have been cool if he used it against Rey’s/Lukes
