The Star Wars Creature Shop Expected in Dubrovnik Today, Plus a Cruiser Ship is Being Transformed into an Alien Vessel!

Neal Scanlan
TFA Creature Shop

Just a day before the filming starts in Dubrovnik, here are a few interesting tidbits from the set…

First, here’s an interesting report sent to us by one of our friends from Croatia. According to him the Star Wars creature shop is expected to arrive in Dubrovnik today. Lots of different monsters are expected on set during the filming. Neal Scanlan is again in charge of the creature shop and we can’t wait to see what his team will come up with this time.

Next, DuList reports that part of the movie will be filmed on a cruise ship in Dubrovnik. According to them the vessels has been rented for a week and is already on location with some workers already transforming the ship. We first thought that they will be filming from the ship, but now it appears that actually the ship will be part of the shoot. It will be really incredible to see this ship transformed into an alien vessel in front of our eyes.

You can see some of the coverings in the photo above. For more photos go to DuList.

Again the guys from DuList got their hands on a document asking the residents of Dubrovnik’s historic center to leave the lights on in their apartments during the filming from March 9 through 16. The production note also alerts that there might be some additional noise during the night shoots that will be caused by some minor special effects.

This request is pretty understandable, since original lighting could greatly improve the look of the night scenes and save some time in post production to artificially lit sets.

StarWarsDubrovnik is reporting that Dubrovnik is experiencing heavy rain and strong southern winds these last few days. However, the weather is expected to improve during the filming so we might not expect any delays due to bad weather.

They also shared some very cool photos and video from Goran Leš, a Star Wars fan from the city of Split. You can check his full gallery HERE.

And last but not least, here’s a 360 video from the set by TheDubrovnikTimes (via Mark Thomas):

Check out the set of the eighth episode of Star Wars in Dubrovnik in full 360. Jump inside of the centre of the set on the Stradun where Star Wars will be filmed. Best viewed in full HD. And don’t forget to use the arrows to move around and explore the Star Wars set.

I wish they could film a scene in bad weather.

I agree. I thought it was cool when Obi-Wan went to the stormy planet of Kamino in Episode II.

Filming on a cruiser like that one is definitely interesting.. Really looking forward to see how they transform it!

I like the look of this. So much better than the repetitive sand box scenes rehashed in TFA. This has a more mature feel.

Not so sure. I like the look of it too. But to say that this is unique to Star Wars isn’t so correct. I say it looks a little too much like Naboo for my liking. We’ll have to see it in context. I’m optomistic.

You can be 100% sure that people will complain about how it rehashed Naboo.

They will complain about anything at this point. I don’t mind the valid ones… I just hate the nonsensical nitpicky ones.

A Star Wars at sea? I’m in. Should appease the “it looks too much like the originals” crowd at least a bit.

Knowing the price standards in Dubrovnik, I bet that lone permission to shoot the film (in the center of the city) was bigger than the cost of building the whole set.

maybe they will use only the half of the buildings and then add digitally some kind of finishing touch… who knows…

I found the “ship thing” weird

Probably the one we will see in Dubrovnik set (the streets of this unknown planet)?

Even if it winds up being half as good as AOTC, I hope we see actual chances taken this time with the creature designs. There really weren’t any breakout aliens in the last one which is a first in the saga.

      New story, new criticism.

And if you’re suggesting that AOTC was actually a good film. Man. What are you smoking.

That would actually be a first, wouldn’t it; to have SW filmed within an actual vehicle. Not sure why they want a ship though.

Maybe they wanna’ scene where the heroes are on a transporter that’s docking, but they’ll CG the bottom of the boat and the water and turn it into sky, turning the boat on water into a dirigible in the air, but with the characters up top, boarding or disembarking the ship, still being filmed on location? That would be cool. Even a continuous shot all the way from the ship flying to the edge of the city to the characters getting off to the characters walking onto the city and into a building … filmed on location from beginning to end.

    Hey, I can dream.
