Watch How Phil Tippett Recreates the Iconic Dejarik Game in The Force Awakens

Dejarik_FalconBack in July Myth Busters’ Adam Savage revealed that VFX legend Phil Tippett was brought back into The Force Awakens to recreate the iconic holochess game called dejarik, played by Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 in A New Hope. Now Tippett Studio posted a video showing how exactly they did that, the old school way.

From Tippett Studio (Vimeo):

See how Phil Tippett and the Tippett Studio team of animators, modelers, fabricators and compositors re-created the stop-motion Holochess set for The Force Awakens, down to the smallest detail!

I love you can tell that these are ILM creations since a few of them look like early designs from Ghostbusters even though it predated that show by nearly a decade. The Kalabra Monster has similar clothes to the Gammorean Guard, I don’t think the EU has ever really gone into any of their backstories surprisingly.

Actually, all of them have backstories. The centipede-looking one is a K’lor’slug, from Rodia. The two-armed tan creature is a Kintan Strider, which is an extinct creature from Kintan. The green one with a tan vest and a long neck is a Mantellian Savrip, which is native to Ord Mantell and is sentient. The rest of them have similar descriptions, and Wookiepedia has them in the Legends database.

Thanks for the tip! I’m guessing they are no longer canon now though? I’d love to see them in future episodes.

They are not, but there is no reason they can’t be reintroduced. There have been several things that were recanonized so far, like Kyle Katarn’s data disc, the Luxury Yacht 3000, the CR-90 corvette, etc. I bet we’ll see them pop up as real creatures, and if I were an author I would probably borrow from the old canon just to save myself from having to come up with something new (provided the old material is good, of course. Let’s not have another bunny rabbit Jedi, okay?).

Haha! Well, We did see them in TFA and I wasn’t paying attention enough to see if they re-recorded new scenes or just re-used the footage from ANH?

Awesome; Berg Murren and Tippett – three honest to god legends.

I heard that they were actually working on a retail game of this way back but have no idea how they would have done it. Even today it would probably be the most expensive home video game ever made.

The Kalabra Monster is also one of the bosses in Super Star Wars. I’m not sure if they gave the other ones names but they should or have them in the new films in cameos as in real-life versions.

Not necessarily. I could rig up a small, cheap projector with a glass surface that projects a reasonably 3D system for about $100. Of course, the license fees would jack up the cost astronomically, but it’s technically feasible to do this at an affordable cost.

I’d love to see the result of that. I know they had an abandoned Sabacc game idea too in the works.

The only rule if you want to be part of that team is that you have to have a beard.

The second rule, is that you don’t TALK about Beard Club…

Viral, I am NOT ready to move on just yet. I have tickets for my second TFA viewing this weekend and will likely see it at least two more times after that. BUT where is the double count-down to R1 and VIII?

That was such a cool moment. You could just tell (in the best way) that it was stop motion.

Loved this little easter egg! There were so many wonderful throwback moments in the film. And loved how Abrams kept the look and feel so similar to the original trilogy. I found out from this infographic: http://www.stridetravel.com/star-wars that only 360 visual effects shots were used in Episode IV. I think Abrams tried to minimize his effect use as well. Appreciate how it made the film look!
