SWNN Review: Royal Mail’s Special Star Wars Stamps Collection!

EnvelopeUK’s Royal Mail issued a set of 18 special stamps on October 20th, to celebrate Star Wars and the upcoming release of the new movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The stamps are illustrated by British artist Malcolm Tween and depict nine popular characters from the first six saga films and three from the forthcoming film. Royal Mail was kind enough to share with us their presentation pack, showcasing all 18 special Star Wars stamps. Read on for more details…

Vertical

The Presentation Pack contains all 12 Special Stamps with characters from all 7 Star Wars movies + the Miniature Sheet, which explore 6 iconic vehicles and spaceships from the film series such as the Millennium Falcon, X-Wing and TIE fighter.

It also features a wealth of information and imagery taken from the first six films in the franchise, together with images of two new The Force Awakens characters on each side. It juxtaposes the Light Side and the Dark Side of the Force by summarising them on opposite sides of this visually stunning pack:

The style of the “1st” value on each of the stamps replicates the iconic font used for the films, but the best feature is that these stamps use florescent ink for the first time ever in the UK:

UV EffectUsing an Ultraviolet torch you will be able to reveal secret symbols on the stamps, revealing the character’s allegiance. The symbol that appears over the characters from The Force Awakens simply reveals the cool logo of the movie (see the image above).

The Miniature Sheet that features 6 stamps with Star Wars vehicles and starships also have very cool info about each vehicle. For example the info on the Resistance X-Wing Starfighter reads:

The modern incarnation of a classic design, the Incom T-70 X-Wing fighter is the signature combat craft of the Resistance forces in their fight against the First Order.

VehiclesThe UK is the third largest market in the world for the Star Wars films, and the new stamps will reflect the passion of the British public for the movies, and celebrate the major British contribution to the film series. The new Special Star Wars stamps are great and affordable way to immortalize this very important period in the new Star Wars era.

If the UK is the 3rd, who’s the 2nd?

I absolutely hated Palpatine’s makeup in the prequel trilogy. It looks so off from what the character looked like in the OT.

He’s a little younger so it should look different but I’m betting the people who did makeup in the OT were either dead now or retired.

Actually, a lot of people working on the OT are still active today, or their children work in the industry, like the costume designers.

I’ve never looked into who did the makeup on Jedi but that’s my guess. Lucas did not seem too keen on rehiring anyone from the OT anyway outside Yanks like John Wlliams and Ben Burtt as he seemed to hate making it and did not have the fond memories that most fans do of it.

Unfortunately that was a result of them going for speed and efficiency over detail. The OT makeup required multiple prostheses and took hours to apply. The ROTS makeup was a full mask, which was much faster but also resulted in the “thick-necked” look.

It’s interesting to see all the characters from all three trilogies together like this. Even more interesting that the Sith are mentioned as antagonists. Are the Knights Of Ren yet another red herring?
