Star Wars Headed Back to Kerry, Ireland to Film for Episode VIII.

Kerry IrelandAs many of you know, Kerry, Ireland is no stranger to being a filming site for both The Force Awakens and Episode VIII, with a good amount of footage shot for both movies at Skellig Michael Island. Now, Disney is apparently headed back sometime next year – and this time, they’ll be making a visit to the Irish mainland.

From RTÉ Ireland:

Disney Lucasfilm could soon be returning to Kerry to shoot scenes for the next Star Wars movie, Episode: VIII. It’s understood the scenes will be shot on the Ceann Sibéal headland at the western end of the Dingle Peninsula next year.

RTÉ News understands that Lucasfilm surveyed the location recently and consider the dramatic cliffs near Ballyferriter ideal for the film, which will be released in 2017.

It is believed a number of local people who have been asked to facilitate filming have already entered into confidentiality agreements with the company. Landowners on Ceann Sibéal declined to comment but it is believed filming at the cliff-top location is being planned for next April.

Ceann Sibéal

The standard environmental concerns apply, of course, but Disney is apparently on very good terms with The Department Of Arts, Heritage And The Gaeltacht, the group of people who allowed them to film at Skellig Michael in the first place. As shown above, the scenery of the area is gorgeous, and ought to be put to good use on film.

County Kerry is gorgeous, thank you. But the picture you’ve used in the main section is actually of Derrynane on the Iveragh peninsula. Which is quite a distance away from the actual shooting location in Ceann Sibéal in Ballyferriter on the Dingle peninsula, which is your second, smaller picture.

Any Star Wars fans planning on visiting us at some point?

It’s all so much nicer than Dagobah. Luke certainly has better taste in hideaways than Yoda. XD

Maybe Yoda knew something about Dagobah we don’t still.

I think this is true. We know at least part of the planet is strong with the dark side, and I think in the EU it was established that Yoda hid there because the Force power inherent on the planet would mask his presence, keeping the Emperor and Vader from sensing him. Not sure if that still stands in the new canon, but unless they ever say otherwise, I imagine it’s still the reason he went there.

For IX and the spin-offs, I’d like to see really extreme real world locations that have never been seen on film before anywhere. Or at least a major blockbuster like Star Wars.

Then they get labeled as looking fake because they’re nothing you can do on Earth. Models and miniatures with CG were used in the prequels for differing environments and we all know what you think of those.

Not really. There are many nations on this Earth and locations that have never been filmed for films like this. Models and minitures that oddly looked even more fake than matte paintings created nearly two decades before.
