man you really don’t want him to be a jedi don’t you, well you are speaking like you have seen the film, give me proof, and don’t mention that crappy fake script cos all the tv spots show that the original characters interact with the new characters for more than one scene, something which the fake script said was not true

It screams, “Finn has the lightsaber and tries to fight with it”, That’s all.

I personally think he will become a Jedi, but not yet. I think Rey ends up as the “new hope” in this and the publicity with Finn and the saber is a deliberate red herring to make you think he’s the new Luke (and it look’s like it’s working).

What about it? She’s a pirate. Not Yoda. Just because she might be able to see the force in some way doesn’t mean she chooses or trains Jedi.

I’m not sure why people say its a red herring. The moment people laid eyes on Rey everyone thought “OMG the Solo twins, She’s Jaina Solo and the new Jedi” It wouldn’t be shocking or a twist if shes the Jedi. The new hope. We all expect it.

Really the surprise would be if theres any family relation between these new characters and the ones of old imo.

Well, as I have said elsewhere I think they both become Jedi and then one will go on to fall to the dark side. I just don’t think Finn becomes a Jedi in this one and I don’t think his use of the saber will reflect what happens in the future. I think that Rey is the Skywalker (either Luke or Leia’s daughter) or Kylo Ren is, and Rey is the one who they initially think is either the Skywalker set to bring balance or to find Luke to help redeem Kylo. I think this is, in part, why we don’t yet really know any of their full names.

Yeah, in a commercial for a movie where the audio and effects are still being mastered and finished, it actually makes sense and is done quite literally ALL the time. No different than using cutting room scenes in trailers, recorded dialogue that never made it into the movie, or any other number of things that happen in trailers and commercials that aren’t the actual movie.

I was right about Rey piloting the Falcon on Jakku with Finn on the turret. Han hasn’t shown up yet.

    • November 21, 2015 at 7:27 pm
      Permalink

There is one thing I don’t get. We were told Rey was abandoned on Jakku at age 5 and grew up pretty much on her own. Where did she learn to pilot a starship then ? From her backstory, she’d probably be barely able to read.

      • November 21, 2015 at 7:30 pm
        Permalink

Based on the trailer and the Falcon’s maneuvers, it seems she’s quite adept as a pilot. So, I take it she either learned that skill elsewhere, probably by someone watching over her on Jakku — kind of like Ben Kenobi. Perhaps Max von Sydow’s character is watching Rey from afar until the time is right.

        • November 21, 2015 at 7:33 pm
          Permalink

What the spoilers in the magazine interviews said is that she had a “boss” on Jakku she reported to, more so than a father figure. Maybe learning to pilot was part of her “job” at one point

That’s probably the best guess there is at this point. This is really cool, though, since now the question becomes, “How on earth does Rey have access to the Falcon?” Furthermore, how does Rey ‘find’ Han and Chewie, so that they too are back onboard the Falcon?

Like all other Abrams SF characters she’s probably a super-genius.

Strange as Luke’s immediate mastery of a T-65 space-superiority starfighter (having only previously piloted a T-16 airspeeder), and instant promotion to lead flier of a trio over two more established Alliance pilots, might seem, at least the X-Wing was a standard design intended for space combat. The Falcon, on the other hand, is a uniquely modified ageing freighter, and probably not ever designed for low-altitude dogfighting.

No amount of scavenger moxie or pre-school memories (or indeed midichlorians) should prepare Rey for the kind of flying we see in the trailers. I hope there is some sort of explanation, because right now I’m looking at the Qo’noS chase from the woeful Star Trek Into Darkness, where Harry Mudd’s confiscated trader outflies half the Klingon Empire on their own turf – and without Jim Kirk at the conn.

Her Grandpa was the best pilot in the galaxy at one point. So was her dad/uncle (Whoever Luke turns out to be) Do you remember the ComicCon behind the scenes video? There is a part where it appears she is struggling how to maneuver the falcon. Plus she may have practiced a little on Jakku..

That’s a good point. I think everyone has pretty much assumed the truth in the rumours that Rey is Han/Leia’s daughter and therefore a Jedi. While that may well be, there is no photographic evidence of her being a Jedi, whereas there is plenty for Finn.

I’d actually assumed they were both force sensitive, but if only one of them is, it’s Finn.

Can you honestly say if it was a pretty white boy actor like Zac Efron(who was in early talks for Finn) or Rob Pattinson that you or all these other people would think he wouldn’t be a Jedi. People would be going crazy thinking that Finn might be a skywalker or related to Obi Wan if some white boy played him. In fact if JJ wanted to do a misdirection that would probably be the way to go.

It does almost appear that he is not and just has it, at least at the moment. He might have the force, but if he did i think he wouldn’t be a storm trooper in the empire, he would be more. So, I think he just has it and uses it but not a jedi, but the more force users the better, it’s not like they would just not be born anymore, but they need training, maybe fin and Rey (related to kylo) will be Lukes students in the second movie.

I’ve noticed it. People really trying hard to prove Finn isn’t a Jedi for some reason. I don’t think he is… yet. One of the early rumors we heard, from the same sources people on here are bringing up, is that there is a scene with Finn deflecting blaster shots with the saber. That’s what stood out to me. I think at the very least, hes an extremely raw force sensitive. The force awakens, and I think gradually he starts to tap into his potential. I believe if anything, Rey is the Skywalker and “main” Jedi of the trilogy, but I believe Finn is just as important and his story just unfolds in a totally different way.

Either way if this was all for misdirection, I think it could backfire. John Boyega is looking like a star, and from what we know so far hes becoming a fan favorite because his story is so refreshing and interesting. They did a helluva job promoting Boyega/Finn and hes going to benefit the most from this movie in my opinion. The other reason Boyega is highlighted could be because of what we heard about there being concern about Ridley handling the media whereas Boyega is much more comfortable and charismatic.

A better analogy than Han would be general grevious. He was highly skilled in melee weapons but even before becoming a cyborg he never was a Jedi. It is possible Finn is a Jedi but the empire has never had random Jedi as stormtroopers- he would be a knight of ren or elite assassin, and if he is just discovering his force sensitivity, why is he already skilled in saber combat? I’m not saying he’s not a Jedi (he very well could be and that would be awesome) but it is far from “obvious” that he is one.

Qui-gon said in the trailers that “the force is unusually strong” in Anakin, so it didn’t take much of a leap. Both Rey and Finn looked shocked when Han says that the Force/jedi are real, which says to me that while the force may be strong with one or both of them, neither of them are jedi yet…

Very true, personally I have no preference either way but a lot a people are very adamant about that for some reason. The only reason I personally think Finn isn’t a jedi is that he is confirmed to be a runaway stormtrooper who is rumored to find lukes old saber. Now if it is bequeathed to him then you are right he is almost definitely a jedi, but if he simply finds it then the fact that Rey seems to be the focus of the marketing make me assume the lead character is a Jedi (although its totally possible they are co-leads or the lead is a non-jedi). Qui-Gon is different because he was rumored to be the master of Obi-Wan and he was advanced in years in the era of thousands of jedi, so clearly he was a jedi. Finn is likely a jedi because he has the saber, but because he is so young I can see it going both ways. Perhaps neither he nor rey is a jedi and luke is indeed the last of his kind.

Well that would be weird because he’s looked like a total bad ass with a lightsaber with these last two spots. So not to have the kid from Attack the Block who rocked a katana blade not have lightsaber and be a jedi in this trilogy will be a collasal mistake. There are always two force sensitves in the big three and one that is not. Obi Wan Anakin Padme, Luke, Leia, and Han, and now Rey, Finn, and Poe. Poe being a main character and an ace pilot gives them a POV character for the aerial battles. Rey and Finn will be force sensitive. They are not just going to have one force sensitive main character. Especially when this trilogy is about the reemergence of the force sensitives and the Jedi.

The “chick” has a name. Rey.

Rey only appears to use the staff in the beginning of the film, on the desert world of Jakku. After that it appears she uses a variety of weapons.

And if you don’t think she’ll become a Jedi, you’re deluding yourself. While Finn is using the lightsaber on Takodana, Rey is being captured in the woods by Kylo Ren. Did you ever wonder why Kylo is so interested in her? It seems unlikely he’d chase some random “chick” into the woods if she were unimportant. #logic

I don’t need to see a clip of Luke to know he’s in the movie. And I don’t need to see a clip of Rey with a light saber to know she’ll wield one. Lucasfilm is spoon feeding us these clips. They want to keep some surprises for the movie.

Anyone say Yoda. From what I can see from that clip/screenshot, she has quite big googly eyes you can see through those goggles. I think she will be a quirky & funny, but ultimately wise character, much like Yoda. I don’t mind this. This is Star Wars and we are always going to need weird aliens.

I’m not sure about quirky and funny though. She sounds quite stern, and even a bit haughty. I remember someone saying that in the Japanese trailer, when she says “Who are you?”, the Japanese subtitles implied the question was asked in quite a rude manner.

Translations, dubbing and subtitles can be deceiving though (not to say “a total damn mess”): in Italy, when Luke asks Obi-Wan about the clone wars in ANH, he actually says “la guerra dei quoti” (which I don’t even know how to translate back in english, because “the quote wars” doesn’t even begin to grasp how bad that translation really is).

That said, I can see how Lupita’s voice can fit Maz Kanata’s appearance – more or less the same way Frank Oz’s voice perfectly fits a big-eared frog-like creature 😉

first of all, everyone here needs to realize that NONE of the new actors are actual JEDI yet. they may potentially be force sensitive, but nothing that we know so far indicates that they’re full fledged jedi. so anyone trying to argue that finn or rey or poe or whomever is a jedi is wasting their time.. you might as well be arguing that leia is a jedi because she too is force sensitive.. my goodness.

I’m not sure how much they’ve actually shown. An article this week said they created over 100 creatures for this film and we’ve only seen a fraction of those, especially in the clips. I think that applies to every aspect of this film. We’ve only seen a fraction of it.

We’ve seen a lot of bits, but we actually know very little about the story (and that’s the important part). Look at how much debate there is over Rey, Kylo and Luke, to name just three things. Snoke remains a total mystery; we don’t even know the real status of the Han & Leia relationship. I don’t think we’ve seen the best parts, not even close. For starters, we’ve yet to be shown a real lightsaber fight. 🙂

As far as the Stormtrooper is concerned … I’m not put off by that, either. He’s canon fodder, and while it’s a good scene, he’s not going to be important part of the flick. If anything, showing that anti-lightsaber weapons are more common only helps raise the dramatic stakes.

So relax, my man. You’re totally right that this is looks great so far.

I tend to think that Finn will keep the classic saber, if only because it’s been so connected to him in everything to this point, but we’ll see.

Personally, I’d like Rey to end up with a double-bladed saber. It fits the style she has with the staff, and it would be awesome to see a Jedi using one for a change. I might be biased, though; my character in Old Republic was a Jedi Shadow Tank, lol.

I’m on the double-bladed saber camp too, i think with her style of fighting and her athleticism, makes sense for her to have a Darth Maul style of fighting, also if Snoke is really tall as Andy Serkis claimed she will need to be acrobatic to fight him.

Why does everyone think Rey is the MAIN CHARACTER. From everything that is leaked in the movie I think Finn gets just as much screentime. Honestly I think this trilogy will be more of a two hander like the last two prequels with Obi Wan and Anakin getting just about equal screen time. And technically Obi Wan was the hero of the prequel trilogy.

Instead I’m going to take Yoda’s advise and clear my mind and go into the theater without any notions of what I want to happen. We’ve seen scenes from the Resistance attack on the Starkiller base and Finn’s showdown with Kylo Ren in the snowy forest. Both take place towards the end of the movie. W’ve also seen the Falcon leaving the Starkiller base as the base appears to be exploding.

I guess we now have a pretty good idea the plot outline from the beginning to the end of the movie, but there are many details to be filled, especially what role Snoke and Luke play, thev status of Haan/Leia relationship, what Maz Kanata tells Finn and Rey, and who is related to whom.

You see this guy called George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, you might know it, directed three films called The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith which means they officially make up about half of the current Star Wars canon; and no amount of ear covering or heads dug in sand will ever cover that fact. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/43143ce3d1b5ed55f3abf41b8c9c711ac09c59fafab81a16db66d24a7ea23b95.jpg

Lol, and no amount of memes can make me consider those three attempts as canon Star Wars material. But I have more than enough love for the original trilogy to keep me enthusiastic, thanks.

Yeah but they were mostly all cut from the film and the one that made it in was dubbed over with a man’s voice (I just checked) so it doesn’t count. Although I’m really glad I have an explanation for that boner now.

I enjoy her appearance, much like a Sweet Tangelo filled with wisdom and juice. The Star Wars saga hasn’t seen a fruit-based species since Ben “Edible Arrangements” Quadinaros.

I know the sounds youre talking about, as bb8 is rolling down the trail, but I honestly never thought of them as sounds being made by the ewoks themselves, instead just the endor wildlife in general

Poe leads Red and Blue squadrons, and possibly more, which means he’s high in the ranks.

Besides a few more new scenes, we got to hear some new sounds, i.e. forest creatures, BB8 surprise squeal, and Poe dialog. And Nien dialog too.

wasn’t Nien Numb speaking an actual language, like a real life language – i think from Africa,
anyways, that ain’t mumbling, he speaks words in sentences.

The final film voice may be different than this promo.
They used an African international student to do the voice back in 1983. I think Ben Burtt would use something other than the exact same audio from Jedi. Maybe they were still recording ADR when the promos were put together.

The ambience of Takodana sounds like it was from Endor too. Probably a last second thing seeing as how the mix wasn’t finished yet.

Why would Disney ask you to remove the video? It’s free advertising for them, and pretty much everyone visiting this site is going to see the movie anyway… seems strange.

The ambience of Takodana sounds suspiciously like Endor. Then again they probably threw that in last second seeing as how its a TV spot and the final mix wasn’t done till it was made.
