Mark Hamill on Returning as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

HamillEmpire posted yet another tease from their upcoming issue due to be released on November 26th. This time it’s an interview with Luke Skywalker himslef – Mark Hamill…

From Empire:

“Obviously you’re seeing him at a very different time in his life. There’s lots of surprises in this movie”, Hamill told Empire. “You’re going to love it.” That may be, but this still leaves us in the dark regarding Luke’s absence from all promotional material thus far. Naturally, fan theories are proliferating in every corner of the webisphere: has the Dark Side corrupted his Jedi mind? Is he now, in fact, a Force ghost? Or is he simply living out his life quite happily until Rey and Finn’s inquisitive nature drags him out of hiding?

Whatever the reason for Luke’s poster and trailer omittance, returning to the franchise is clearly a labour of love for Hamill, who has spent the best part of the last three decades lending his vocal talents to the animated Spider-Man series, Johnny Bravo and Robot Chicken, to name a mere few. “It reminded me of when I was in Tunisia on the salt flats [shooting the first Star Wars]. If you could get into your own mind and shut out the crew and look at the horizon, you really felt like you were in a galaxy far, far away. I had that same wave of emotion happen to me when I was on Skellig Michael in Ireland. I wasn’t anticipating it.”

Looking forward to EP8 showing Luke training Rey to be a Jedi on Skellig.

Well this confirms a theory or two that we’ve had for a long time right there. Nice.

Something the Prequels failed to give us were new force powers aside from maybe Force Speed. There were so many cool ones they could draw inspiration from the games and while I don’t want to see him turned into some kind of superhero, I think they can definitely afford to be more creative in that area.

I agree. In the prequels the jedi were tend to solve all of their problems with their lightsaber. I mean Ben Kenobi used his voice to scare the Tusken Raiders, and used his lightsaber only when it was necesssary. I hope in the new movies they well come up with something new.

Yeah, It makes them seem uncharacteristcally agressive when they did rather than find a more peaceful solution, Especially during the Prequel era.

      Force push…

Vader used it when he said “all too easy” and turned the carbon freezing chamber button on after knocking Luke into it in Empire.

Nah, that was more of a straight-up, purpose-built telekinetic command (flipping a knob, Vader lifting specific pieces of junk off the wall to hurl against Luke). The Prequel trilogy was really the 1st clear-cut time where a Jedi threw out the kung-fu flat palm (see Obi-wan vs. Trade Fed droids in TPM opening fight) and a group of things correspondingly ‘flew’ away…

High on my list for Sequels: The ‘Force Repulse’ power Starkiller had (if you’ve not played the game, it’s essentially a 360-degree Force Push, but oh so fun for wreaking panoramic, close-up havoc on groups!)

of all the over-blown, stupid stuff introduced in the PT, I have to say “Lightning Block” that Yoda does in III is actually pretty awesome, and perfect for what Yoda’s actually about.

I don’t really count it as new per se as Vader did the same with Han’s blaster bolts in Empire where he basically created a force bubble that dissolved it into nothingness with his hand.

        • November 21, 2015 at 7:30 am
          Permalink

I argue that it’s different, because the Lightning is basically Dark Force energy, whereas the blaster bolt is just plasma or something.
So when Yoda stops the lightning, he isn’t just bouncing it off like some random weapon, but actually ABSORBS the sith lightning into himself, come to think of it, I remember that Yoda actually looks somewhat drained/hurt when he absorbs it, almost as if, for a second, the power of the Dark Side has penetrated him, and he takes a little second before he’s normalized.
On the surface I see what your saying, but I think there’s something special about Sith Lightning that requires a different method to resist, because there is both the physical blocking and the spiritual resistance at once.

Back to your original point, I think they could give different Sith-lords different “specials” to fit their persona.
Sidious is all-penetrating and twisting like Lightning,
Darth Vader crushes resistance like his Choke Hold,

Kinda wish Darth Maul and Dooku got their own specials.
Darth Maul could have rocked his own special – maybe a force push that wrecks and maims and disintigrates anything it hits, like a Shotgun out his hand, could have been called “Mauling Sith-Strike” or something.

Meanwhile Dooku got Lighting, the same EXACT power Sheev gets, which is, correct me if i’m wrong, a cop-out.
I think Dooku would have been better suited to Mass Mind Control. Like, he walks into a room full of Clone-troopers, and everyone pauses and drops their weapons in a daze, and Dooku just waltzes past an army without raising a finger. That would have been cool.

I hope Kylo gets a special,

Yeah it’s sorta a grey are alright. I think Lucas mentioned it on the commentary which I consider canon and it was as well in the Jedi Path book which no longer is being a part of the old EU.

It looks like he blocks the blast with his palm which I think everyone thought when they saw it at first but if that were the case then his hand would have been blasted to bits or at the very least caught fire. Not like the suit was blaster proof or anything. So the energy had to have been absorbed somewhere in him.

Luke had the force choke too, In the books it said it wasnt a dark side power which sounded like crap to me but it’s no longer canon anymore.

The video games were very good at coming up with force powers which they should borrow from even if they are not canon now. Long as they don’t make then X-Men clones and overdo it then I think it could be a great idea.

Dooku and Maul were very poorly developed characters that had lots of potential. They both only get the same amount of screen time too. Maul’s kind of well represented in the EU having come back to life in The Clone Wars which is technically canon. But Dooku’s life before Episode II is pretty much a mystery aside from being trained by Yoda and having trained Qui-Gon.

Far as we know, We can confirm that Kylo uses the force push at least once from the trailers.

How about force fireball, or no wait force fly!

How about force heart attack! Or force curl up into a ball and explode.

we don’t need more superfluous dumb force moves that are taken way too far over the top. Sidious and Yoda battling it out in the Senate Hall was very close to being plain dumb and over the top. I get that these guys are powerful but unless you are 8 years old, the force should have elements of mystery and maturity considering it’s based on an Eastern Philisophy. The peter Jackson effect for magic is the correct way to dealing with force powers, you want them to be believable and not magic missiles flying from your fingertips into a magic shield.

With the games that’s different because they are video games and you need things like that for gameplay mechanics but in movies that’s a completely different medium.

      • November 22, 2015 at 1:44 pm

But even with the existing force powers there are new things they can do that aren’t the usual standard boring moves they repeated throughout the Prequels.

If it’s really seeped in Eastern Philosophy then like Martial Arts there is more than one way to use it other than the generic kicking and punching.

They kinda got into it in Clone Wars like having Dooku use it to get sand in Anakin’s eye while dueling on Tatooine. That’s still realistic, not over the top, and has never been done before either.

except it was never a fan theory, but one of Lucas’ original ideas. Luke would replace vader, Obi-Wan killed Anakin, Leia wasn’t his sister (all the kissing in ANH)

thats fair, but not what i was talking about. besides JJ took all of lucas’ ideas and chucked them in a dumpster. i’m referring to luke is kylo ren or luke is snoke. both being rather silly theories, especially given how much we already knew about luke for the new movies.

I’m happy that we’ll never see Lucas’ ideas about teenage emo skywalkers on the big screen, we’ve had 2 movies of that already and that’s way more than we needed.

luke being the new “emperor”, so to speak is just a retarded train of thought, like, how could Luke ever be Kylo if you’ve already seen both entities in the trailer, and you’ve also heard Luke and Snoke talk independent of each other

you oubviously don’t know much about Star Wars: http://io9.com/10-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-star-wars-ret-1383276948/1388764126

“Even though Lucas really wanted a bright, upbeat ending, and he fought
against killing off any major characters — even Yoda, for a long time —
during one story session, Lucas pitched a really, really dark ending.
In a nutshell, the scene with Vader and the Emperor unspools the way it
does in the final film. Vader sacrifices himself to take out the
Emperor, and then Luke helps Vader to take off his famous helmet. And
then — Luke puts on Vader’s helmet himself. In the transcript of the
story session with Lucas and Kasdan, Lucas says: “Luke takes his mask
off. The mask is the very last thing — and then Luke puts it on and
says, ‘Now I am Vader.’ Surprise! The ultimate twist. ‘Now I will go and
kill the [Rebel] fleet and I will rule the universe.'” Kasdan
immediately responded, “That’s what I think should happen” — but Lucas
didn’t actually want to go that dark because “this is for kids.””

Lucas played around with the idea of him turning to the dark side in Return of the Jedi. It was also going to be called Revenge of the Jedi at one point. It’s not a crazy theory. But it would sort of feel cheap. It would just negate RotJ. Not to mention how we wouldn’t able to see it happen for ourselves.

We haven’t really seen a solid story of how someone turns to the dark side. It practically always happens off-screen. The prequels don’t really count, as it was just “flip a switch and I murder innocent children now.”

No Hamill wanted Lucas to play around with the idea of Luke turning to the dark side. The misinformation from fans is unbelievable sometimes. If you want proof, look up the Kevin Smith diner table discussion with Mark Hamil and JJ Abrams that happened 10 years ago.

Lucas never wanted to toy around with the idea that Luke turned to the dark side. It was Mark Hamill who wanted to. George would never do it because he was afraid it would scar children for life. and that is exactly why Luke wont be evil in this movie. They renamed Revenge of the Jedi a week before the movie’s release, because Lucas realized that Jedi do not take revenge.

I agree. I’m tired of everyone thinking he’s gone to the dark side or dead as a force ghost. It’s not hard to believe that he is just in exile and doing his master Jedi business like his mentors obi wan and yoda did. It makes the most sense. So Rey will find him and the saber shall be passed down to a new hero

Something else I want to see in the new trilogy are more colored lightsaber blades. It makes sense for the Sith and dark siders to only use red but I always wanted to see more Jedi ones other than blue, green, and purple like in the old EU comics. It would only make sense that they’d have diverse range to choose from.

Unfortunately with Luke, Kylo, Finn, and maybe Rey as the only lightsaber wielders left in the galaxy we may not get to see it.

  • November 21, 2015 at 3:56 pm

In the old EU it was due to the power crystals only being left that were located on Illum which were all blue and green while the Sith built their own synthetic ones but that’s all out the window now.

Luke hasn’t joined the dark side at all because of the scene where we see his robot hand touch R2. THAT says it all. A dark side user wouldn’t have that emotion or thought to lay a hand on a droid in that way. Luke, if he was a dark side user, wouldn’t go near that droid unless it was to destroy it. Luke + R2 = light side…unless of-course, immediately after, he switches on his lightsaber with the other hand and watches it go through the droids head…all while patting him…CRAP…LUKE HAS JOINED THE DARK SIDE
