SPOILERS “I’ve felt it too” Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, and Finn speak!!

Kylo_Ren

Earlier today some footage popped up online of the Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, and Finn figures and masks speaking lines of dialogue from The Force Awakens!  POSSIBLY HUGE MASSIVE BIG SPOILERS AHEAD!

/Film posted a piece earlier compiling footage from IGN and Making Star Wars featuring the spoken words of none other than Kylo Ren (Adam Driver, not at all distorted), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie, sounding very Storm Trooper), and Finn (sounding like Finn).  We can assume this is dialogue, some of consequence and some not, straight from The Force Awakens.

Finn

“My name’s Finn and I’m in charge now!”–Perhaps the first meeting with Po Dameron

“We go back to Jakku and we die.”–Sounds familiar…

“Stay low and put up the shields”

“We need cover!  Quick!”–Perhaps the glimpses we’ve seen of TIE Fighters swooping down on Jakku.

“FN2187…I don’t…know what…to do!”–Heard in Captain Phasma’s dialogue below as well.  Must be some First Order officer designation.

“I never should have rescued you.”–I’ll put my money on him talking to Po.  Again.

“I’ve had a pretty messed up day.”–And I’m guessing from the looks of that Instagram tease we all saw it’s not getting much better.

Captain Phasma

“Move your ships now”–I wouldn’t argue.

“On my command.”–It seems like ‘FIRE’ would be the appropriate word left out here.

“Fire FN2187.”–Another familiar number, if you’ve been paying attention, and have been watching A New Hope gearing up for Force Friday.

“Submit your blaster for inspection.”-Again, I wouldn’t argue.

Kylo Ren

“I’ve felt it too.”–Where have we heard the question he’s answering?

“You know what I’ve come for.”–Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber and whatever other Force artifacts you have.

“Together we will destroy the Resistance and the last Jedi.”–Join me and I will complete your training.

“Don’t fight it.”–Give into it…whatever that is.

“You know you can’t, I am immune to the light.”–Not gonna speculate on that one.

“We will send it away.”–Skipping that one too.

“I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.”–An ominous statement we will no doubt be saying to ourselves multiple times come December 18th.

“Is it true you’re just a scavenger?”–Pretty clear he’s talking to Rey.  Seems like maybe Kylo regards her as an underachiever.

“Don’t be afraid, I feel it too.”–The Dark Side, I’m guessing.

“That weapon is mine.”–Yes, Kylo.  I’m sure they all are.

We’ll let that speak for itself.  What do you all think?  Head on over to The Cantina and let us know!

Vader drank Coffey on Victory class ships!
Friggin moron, I don’t care if they’re at Starbucks sippin a few with Starbuck.
        Geez, get a grip.
If Vader drank caffeinated coffee it could of killed him! That’s why he was so menacing, and pissed off choking people, don’t you remember the boardroom seen with Tarkin.
Vader choked that other Moff cause they were havin coffee without him…so pay attention to the previous films, there was no meet and greet on the Tantive either, that why he boarded the way that he did, so me diplomats, at least obiwan and quigon got served by a protocol droid in ep one…before they got based.

Not sure about that. Her hands look really close to a regular stormtrooper. 3PO has visible wires running through his digits, and slightly different shape to part of his hand than Phasma.

Although her being a robot to me would be the only reasonable explanation for such a lame voice. Lucas strikes again? This film’s Grievous?

The helmet is what gives the lame British accent? I find that hard to believe. If that’s the case, it makes it even MORE lame. We can assume we’ll never see Phasma unmasked in these films, like Fett in the OT films. So logically, the mask SHOULD make her sound menacing. It doesn’t though.

Grievous’ voice was bad. Not menacing at all.

As Red Letter Media alluded to in his review, the character came across a mix of an attempt at a villainly and a comedy. Just didn’t work. His breathing reminded me too much of Vader, and he ran like he needed to take a s***.

Phasma sounds awkward with a British accent. Darn, most of my anticipation has dropped for Phasma. Not at all like a threatening Stormtrooper commander.

Plenty of British actors and actresses, due to talent, have this ability to change their voice and accent and sound very menacing. See Christian Bale.

The other commenter on here got it spot on. Her voice sounds too regal, too royal, like Queen Elizabeth, not like a menacing Star Wars character.

Or are you meaning to tell me they should not have tried to change her voice? Or maybe she doesn’t have the ability to change her voice much?

Given the age difference (Adam Driver 31, Daisy Ridley 23) I would suggest that they’re not twins.

They could still be brother and sister, but they would be hard pushed for them to be the same age IMO

    • September 4, 2015 at 11:37 am

Assuming that it turns out Rey and Kylo are siblings:

Rey may not know that Kylo is her brother. Kylo Ren is not his birth name, but the name he gave himself when he joined the Knights of Ren. Also, Kylo is wearing a mask for most of the time. Perhaps Rey is captured and brought to Kylo, and Kylo removes his mask in front of her, and that’s when she realizes it’s her brother.

Secondly, Rey could be Leia’s daughter, and has been hiding out on Jaaku, because she doesn’t want to be involved with space politics. The character so far strikes me as royalty disguising herself as a commoner.

So when brother and sister reunite, it’s a surprise to each of them what the other is doing. Brother tries to convince sister to join him in the Dark Side. (They are both powerful with the Force, and the Force has been growing stronger lately, which they both sense.) The dialog that this Kylo doll speaks would fit this theory.

The voices themselves are ok. I’d never heard Adam Driver speak, so I’m pleasently surprised by the timbre. Phasma sounds too cool for me – does she have any emotions?

Also, Finn is the only one whose delivery varies, and even he has only two modes (intense and panicking). Maybe it’s better with facial expressions and music, but so far I’m a bit underwhelmed by the uniformity of the delivery.

Is Kylo speaking to Luke or to Han? If it is Han it would imply that both know each other.
If it is Luke than this would be confirmation that Lukes screentime ist larger than just one scene.

But I don’t think that Kylo is speaking to anyone else, it wouldn’t make sense for him to say ““I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time” to Finn or Rey…

    FN2187… the number is interesting!

Seems like the first order designates their troopers according to their birthnames followed by a running number…

So FN could stand just for “Finn”, which I doubt, or for his firstname and lastname, which would rule out that he is a Calrissian.

The number indicates that there are at least over 2000 troopers with the same initials as Finn (following this theory), which would allow to estimate the size of the first order army to be only moderate, but not too overwhelming like the empire’s might at it’s peak (which would make totally sense, after all). Just my 2 cents.

    • September 4, 2015 at 5:49 pm
      Permalink

The number they chose for Finn or any other trooper isn’t going to have much bearing on the total number of troops. Remember TK 421?

I’d say his name really is FN2187 — his stormtrooper designation but FN, pronounced “Finn” for short. Wasn’t 2187 the cell number that Princess Leia was locked up in on the Death Star?

26*26*10^4 stormtroopers isn’t much so FN2187 is probably just part of his serial number.

    Possible Spoilers:

To me, the lines indicate that Rey and Kylo know each other from the past… I think they both trained at Luke’s Jedi academy and then Kylo betrayed them and raided the academy with his Knights of Ren (maybe he’s their leader as “Ren” and his followers are his “knights”?)
Rey refused using the force and went to exile on Jakku. I think they are really twins, this would make things even more involving.

Phasma’s voice here matched Phasma’s swagger in the trailer and gifs. It’s cool but very commanding. Phasma: Submit your blaster for inspection. Guy: (knees buckle) (jaw slackens) (hands tremble) Here have my blaster

I love it! Not your usual menacing crazy psycho villain voice

I think all three characters sound good.

Finn: More emotion than I expected. A bit of humor and banter in there as well (very similar to the OT- those guys were always yelling something back and forth).

Captain Phasma: Sounds cool, calm, and in control. Has a Boba Fett vibe, which I’m sure is intentional. I’m glad they didn’t go overboard and make her sound ‘cartoonish’.

Kylo Ren: Sounds serial-killer creepy. I was somewhat surprised by the lack of heavy modulation FX (like Vader), but this guy sounds cold-blooded. Villians who speak calmly always give me the creeps.

I would have loved some Rey dialogue, but I have no worries. She looks intense in the footage we’ve seen. I have no doubt she will be great.

Cannot freakin’ wait for the full trailer!!! It’s September JJ, come on already!

      “Kylo Ren: Sounds serial-killer creepy.”

Funny you should say that. While I kinda got the “drinking coffee at the office” thing that a few others mentioned above, there were a couple of inflections there that reminded me for a moment of Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. So I think I see what you mean.

We all know what the final finishing line is for these toys. A box in the attic, left there for years or a nice photo on ebay. Once you played with them and extracted all the fun, they are destined for this fate. You will probably move on to another craze or hobby.

You`d be better off investing your money into something real than pissing it all down the drain on plastic toys and merchandise. Cheap toys maybe, but it all adds up. Buy some gold instead or another small investment. Then when the boredom sets in you can feel good and see you still have something decent. Without boxes full of plastic painted crap.

Meanwhile a disney executive is laying on a lilo in his/her pool saying. “Thankyou suckers for the new pool and cars, enjoying the merchandise ?”

Yikes, not sure what that had to do with British accents, but okay! Seems I’ve opened a dark hole here, I only meant that I had been excited to have a more interesting sounding hero who sounds more like the people that I meet on a daily basis living in London. Not a typical over-the-top American action-movie accent, or a fake exaggerated posh British voice. Black versus white had nothing to do with it!

Finn sounds too much ghetto and why is he yelling all the time?
Is it nowadays common to yell the dialog in movies?
Can’t remember any of this garbage in the OT, only Luke yells a bit of his dialog after Vader told him the truth about his father in ESB.

I can’t be the only one a bit pissed off that Luke is still the last Jedi. Sure the rumored flashback might show us he tried to rebuild the order and failed but it just seems very underwhelming! Episode 7 should feel different, new and fresh. However it looks like all we are getting is a recycled A New Hope in brand new packaging. Why not toss us into something like Episode 3? WE have a war going on between The First Order and The New Republic. The New Republic has a dozen or so Jedi to combat this new threat but is consistently being defeated and pushed to the brink. Enter our new heroes who can help change the tied. Toss us right into the Action and build a ST with high stakes with the galaxies fate on the line. However we get another Episode 4. We get stuck in a galaxy that has seen the New Republic reduced to a resistance once again and a lone Jedi master in Hiding waiting for the right moment. Episodes 1-3 were about the fall of a Republic. Episodes 4-6 were about redemption and bringing down the evil empire. The ST should be about the struggle of keeping it together! NOPE!! We get A New Hope 2.0!!!

Nice points on your last sentence! Sequel Trilogy should be about re-emerging from the Empire’s dominance and battling the remniscents of it, and that’s exactly what the EU does. But nope, WE GET A REBOOT ON THE FRANCHISE BY THE OH SO WONDERFUL STORY GOUP MADE OF HARDCORE SW FANS that’s why I am son of a bitch of my face, I get mad of my head.

    • September 4, 2015 at 7:13 pm
      Permalink

Why the the EU was made non canon, is to sell new stories, new merchandise, but those overall story archs are still intact, just somethings and places renamed.
Don’t forget about the force users before the establishment of the Jedi, will we hear of the Ashla or the Bogan someday? Jedi is an order of forceusing guardians, Like or one of his students may restore the order or start a new.

My good friend, who shall remain nameless, works for bad robot. I’ve begged and begged him for information on this film and finally yesterday, he gave me one bit of info.

He said at the end of the movie Ren faces Luke and says “we meet at last, son of Vader”.

But that’s all he would tell me. Wouldn’t tell me what happens next or what led to this show down. But shit got me excited.

I have to commend JJ and Lucasfilm for not giving too much away before the film is released.

I have a feeling there are still quite a few surprises in the can that only Kasdan, JJ, Kathleen Kennedy, and the Editors know about. I think it’s a good thing, actually (as much as I want to know everything about this film).

I like the feel of these new characters. They seem like they are part of the SW Universe, to me. The voices sound ‘right’ to my ear, and are certainly in line with the intonation and delivery used in the OT.

My hope is that they will not be afraid to take some risks, while still honoring the spirit of the originals. I am encouraged by what I’ve seen, so far- but I realize that Disney’s goal is to make money, so they are going to probably play it fairly ‘safe’.

Still, with the film being made by a team comprised of childhood fans working alongside some of the original legends, I am optimistic that these new films will re-energize the franchise and remind us all why we became fans in the first place.

“we will crush the resistance….and the last Jedi”
The line makes it seem like his priority is destroying the ressistance movement and that killing the last of the Jedi is just the icing on the cake, perhaps settling a personal grudge on kylos part. I doubt the first order is terribly worried about crazy old Luke in hiding.

I’m into Kylo.. He sounds almost benevolent at times. They have been talking about having greyish characters that are more about a strong belief in their convictions than are some abstract embodiment of evil. He sounds like a complex character. It’s cool that they don’t hit you over the head with his vocal effects and cartoony evil.Man they made Boyega into a cry baby I hope it’s a set up for a heroic transformation into a grade A BMF. Phasma is completely on point just absolutely embodies the vibe of the old empire.

I get it. I’m kinda getting a Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now vibe from him. Regarding John Boyega and the character transformation, I think you’re spot on with that as well. We already know it happens at some point in the movie. Don’t forget Luke and his whining in ANH. “I was going Tosche station to pick up some power converters!”

      Good observations!

Boyega’s American accent sounds a bit corny. Like, Gee, whiz let’s run! They probably should have used his real voice. But hopefully he’ll be good.
