UPDATE! Interview With Star Wars: Shattered Empire’s Greg Rucka. Cover for Issue 2 Revealed!

shattered

StarWars.com has a great interview with Greg Rucka, the writer of the forthcoming Shattered Empire comic series. This interview provides great insight into what parts of the Star Wars universe we will see, how the Big 3 (Luke, Leia, Han) will fit into the story, and the frantic state of the Empire following the Battle of Endor…

August 7, 2015

Greg Rucka is a seasoned comics writer, having worked on some of the biggest titles in both the Marvel and DC properties. Fans should rest assured Shattered Empire is in good hands, and this interview with Rucka’s thoughtful approach will dispel any doubt these issues are going to be must-have items for Star Wars fans.

It sounds like we will only be seeing the principles of the Original Trilogy in passing, but Greg Rucka throws a few teasers of what could be in store for our characters down the line. Shattered Empire will focus primarily on a married couple that are veterans of the Rebellion’s struggle against the Empire. We will be taken to planets not yet seen in the Star Wars films and get a look at the seeds of the First Order.

There are potential spoilers so beware. It’s a great interview and just another thing to get us all excited for the September build up to The Force Awakens.

You can read the full interview HERE

Marvel’s Star Wars: Shattered Empire will be released September 2. Force Friday is shaping up nicely for Star Wars fans!

UPDATE!

August 27, 2015

StarWars.com revealed the cover for the second issue, which features new mysterious female character.

In Marvel’s Star Wars: Shattered Empire by Greg Rucka and Marco Checchetto, The First Order is still decades away, and it’s safe to assume Luke, Han, and Leia have a lot on their plate after overthrowing the governing force that controlled the galaxy.

I have a feeling that we won’t have any of the Big 3 characters “star” in any forms of media about the events right after ROTJ (film,Book,Comic,T.V. etc.) until after the Sequel trilogy (VII-IX) is completed. I guess I will have to wait until after 2019.

Yeah, or at least until after TFA hits the screen. They’re trying to build the mystery, but once we know where they are 30 years later, they can go back and fill in on where they were.

Also, let’s face it, most people working on the side projects (i.e. writing the comics) do not really have access to spoilers. They have a list of what they can and cannot do, but the filmmakers are way too smart to let any sensitive info fall into too many hands.

Everything before December is just a tease.

Gotta say, as exciting as this looks, I’m a bit gutted we won’t see the Big Three. Especially since Aftermath isn’t focussing on them, I was hoping this would. Oh well. Artwork looks spectacular though!

We only know the basics of the 1st Aftermath book. Remember that it’s a trilogy so maybe one or both of the next two books will showcase the Big 3 more than the 1st book in the series (and maybe the 1st book might have them on there too even if the focus isn’t on them initially; it’s still a little early to tell).

Typo on my original comment, we won’t see the Big 3 much*, not at all.

That’s a good point! But even so I doubt the whole trilogy will be out before TFA. Maybe the later installments, released after this December can delve into more detail on them, since the whole lid of mystery box thing can be off.

Wow, this is probably one of my favorite interviews with someone who has the power to shape canon since the old canon was done away with. You can tell this guy is PASSIONATE about getting it right. The sheer reverence and excitement he feels about even a simple scene like Leia and Mon Mothma discussing Padme is palpable. This guy NEEDS to do a good job, for personal reasons.

I may or may not like the comics – I’ll wait to read them to decide. But, if Star Wars is always treated with this level of excitement and near-worship by future story tellers, I think Star Wars’ future is bright indeed 🙂

I’m so ready to move the story forward into new Canon.

So are all the new stories going to have the main character be a female?

    • August 7, 2015 at 11:55 pm
      Permalink

There has been the Leia series and a split perspective between Ventress and Vos, two amazing characters, and that’s it. The moff in Lords of the Sith isn’t even the main star. Lost Stars is coming out, and this is a shared perspective/plot with a wife and her husband side by side. So no, women are simply getting their fair due in Star Wars, that’s all (I’m a guy btw).

Well, to be fair, there is TFA and Rogue One. Both are looking more and more like they will have women leads as well. Boyegs is looking more and more like he’s just there to support Rey.

So that presumably makes the three saga movies and one anthology with female leads.

The Aftermath book has a female lead as well. Nothing wrong with female leads it just seems like they are now overcompensating.

No, overcompensating. It’s bordering on pandering.

How about the dozens of Star Wars novels and six films that were focused on male leads?

Why don’t you call THAT pandering?

          • August 27, 2015 at 9:47 pm
            Permalink

Maybe because men are more likely to fight in wars or be in positions of power?

Like we’re supposed to believe that these women have always been there, or that all of a sudden all these women are stepping up and taking the lead?

It DOES seem like pandering when you change the way this universe has run to suit the current PC environment.

But we are talking about a film company that made its money off of princesses……

I gotta say, I feel the First Order will have some pretty terrible situations hinted or shown in this series to form. I still feel like the Empire will fall, but the First Order is being hyped as something ruthless and deadly, and not required to be connected to the Old Republic in any shape or form, as samll as it already was by ROTJ.

“And once you start unpacking that, you’ve got this story of Padmé Naberrie, who is Padmé Amidala. That leads, inevitably, and it doesn’t have to be a big moment, to her going, ‘Wait a second,’ and that scene where she’s got to turn [to Mon Mothma] and say, ‘You were there. She was your friend. Who was she? I want to know.’”

    Whoa.

I wonder if this series will follow the same theme as current new canon comics, using the intro of black characters as cliffhangers?

….. and will this transfer into the new movies? No more beleaguered rebel fleets blasting off into the unknown before credit rolls? I now expect to see Will Smith emerge from the shadows wearing a cybernetic implant over his eye, growl out some trite comment ( using improper English) ….. fade to black, explosion of John Williams and a, “Directed by J.J. Abrams.”

THIS is THE Star Wars comic ive been waiting for. Grew up with the original marvel run.. ive been following the reviews of the latest wave of SW comics, and except for Kanan the last Padawan havent been too impressed. I hope this one knocks it out of the park…

Yeah Kanan is SO good. I’ve liked some of Star Wars (obi-wan comic was good). And all the books apart from heir to the jedi and a new dawn have been very enjoyable.

Kind of bummed that they are putting the big three in the backseat in all of the new stories after ROTJ. It is bad enough that they are doing it in the new trilogy.but why in all of the stories leading up to it as well? Condsidering this whole timeline is about the Skywalker’s.It would of almost been better if they would have just filmed a new trilogy 1,000 years after ROTJ if they wanted to start fresh.Nobody cares about these new characters in these new stories leading up to TFA….Everyone want’s to know the big three’s story, since this is all a direct sequel and continuation of the same story.all of a sudden they aren’t important in the story anymore? lol..

I think the story group are being incredibly protective (maybe overprotective) of the big 3 in a way. Like, they want to save them for a really great, epic story that takes place at some point between RotJ and TFA. Basically, they’re looking for the next Thrawn Trilogy. Until some writer brings them an idea they think will be just as good, and resonate with fans just as much, I don’t think we’re going to see any stories staring the big 3 in this time period.

Either that, or there is some huge, game-changing backstory for the big 3 in TFA, and they’re waiting until after the film to announce a novel or comic that tells that story.

I gotta say that im very curious to discover how the Empire evolved after the battle of Endor into the First Order. Taking the whole “how the nazis fled to South America ” into account its interesting to assume that Snoke ( be he Plagueis or not) is some sort of religious leader or spokesmen of a cult that right after the fall of Endor funded the safe passageway for alot of high ranking Imperials ( and their fleet ) into a neutral system where they could slowly build up their arsenal over the next 3 decades ( again funded by Snoke)
interesting to read this article how the Vatican arranged for safe passage of many Nazi’s in this article : http://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/may/25/nazis-escaped-on-red-cross-documents
another very interesting fact is that the Vatican organised the holy crusades during the middle ages. now we all seen the nods they do with Kylo Ren to a holy crusader with his crossed lightsaber but did u know that the crusaders knights where divided into MILITARY ORDERS ? I think its safe to assume that the name THE FIRST ORDER has nothing to do with Palpatine’s contingency orders during the clone wars but has all to do with a military order of knights ( THE KNIGHTS OF REN is one of those orders and possibly the first one) that was part of a religious cult where Snoke is the leader who worship the Sith and consider them their gods. Now in Catholicism people worship Christ as their saviour because he resurrected from death. And what Sith lord could be better to cheat death then Plagueis ?

I still think the Knights of Ren will be based on the Knights Templar, and we discover in TFA just how influential they have been in politics behind the scenes throught the PT and the OT. I think the First Order (which we now know doesn’t take full shape until very close to the time of TFA) will be fighting a Holy War of sorts in the name of their “savior” Darth Vader. Much like the Crusades, I believe the First Order (formed by the KOR) will attempt to lay claim to the galaxy in the name of their savior, with the backing of a dark lord who has an almost religious view of the Sith and the one who brought balance to the force, Darth Vader – but obviously has his own agenda that propels the events of the trilogy. I am also getting a sort of Court of Owls vibe (New 52 Batman fans know what I mean) regarding the KOR with the rumors I’ve heard so far, especially given the flashback rumors about Bespin. The idea of a Knight of Ren watching the Vader/Skywalker duel from a distance and taking the lost lightsaber of Luke/Anakin after the duel which later falls into the hands of our TFA heroes is intriguing to me. I think Kylo Ren will be tasked with searching out this Holy artifact which puts him in contention with our protagonists. This whole possible plot thread excites me to no end. I could be completely off base, but I can’t wait to see which direction they take regardless. As for the girl on the cover of issue #2…what if she is the main character we read about in Aftermath?
