EA Shows First Look at the Battle of Jakku in Star Wars: Battlefront!
The Battle of Jakku is a free downloadable level from the upcoming game Star Wars: Battlefront, set to be released on December 8, 2015 (or December 1st if you pre-order the game). It takes place 29 years before the events in The Force Awakens. Read on for more details on the game and what to expect from the release.
From EA:
We are proud to give you a first visual glimpse of The Battle of Jakku, coming to Star Wars™ Battlefront™ on December 1st, 2015, for all who pre-order, and a week later for all other game holders. The Battle of Jakku was the pivotal moment when the New Republic confronted key Imperial holdouts on a remote desert planet.
Taking place in the aftermath of the Rebel victory in the Battle of Endor, players will experience the events that created the massive, battle-scarred landscape of Jakku shown in Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™.
DICE Concept Artist Anton Grandert shares some thoughts on the shown artwork above:
“There’s a David and Goliath theme to this,” says Grandert. “The epic, huge super structures of the Star Destroyers contrast against the tiny but brave Rebel soldiers fighting the Imperial forces.”
“We wanted to portray a battle completely surrounding you, in every direction. Debris is falling from the sky, telling the story of battles above. On the surface of the planet you can see ground troops as well as X-wings, all taking part of the fight,” Grandert says.

Luke is the Ultimate Power in the Universe, the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant to the Power of the Force.
Is this dlc?
I guess so. Maybe like an extension pack
Yeah, it’s free DLC for those who buy the game.
So… Everyone?
no, the pirates will suffer… until they crack the dlc and upload it ;P
So am I mistaken or is this the first time we have heard the post-Rebellion government in power called out as the “New Republic”?
You’re mistaken, they have mentioned the New Republic, and how the Resistance is an unsanctioned offshoot of it, fighting off the First Order.
I’d heard the New Republic bit, but not the official announcement of the Resistance being an unsanctioned, separate entity. There have even been threads asking what happened to the New Republic to make it become the Resistance. What did you read that made it official? (I’m actually very curious, as I’m sure they’re two different things as well)
I think I remember them saying something about the New Republic when they were talking about the Jakku map back a couple months ago, but I wasn’t sure. I haven’t followed Battlefront news as closely as TFA. Thanks.
Where have you read that the Resistance is unsanctioned? (Not debating, am curious for confirmation.)
The impression I’ve gleaned is that the “new” Republic is simply the “Republic” again in the sequels. The “Resistance” is a coalition that has come together in the Outer Rim to fight the First Order, which has been taking over the Outer Rim. The Resistance is supported by the Republic. (Leia and Poe could be with the Republic and sent to advise and assist the Resistance.)
It is to the Republic’s self-interest to support the Resistance in the Outer Rim, since the First Order’s eventual goal is to take down the Republic, advancing toward Coruscant.
The above is my theory but pieced together from what little information has leaked.
“There’s a David and Goliath theme to this,”
I though Elhanan killed Goliath. Oh well. I was never popular in Sunday School. I asked too many questions, and never the “right” ones…
He killed his brother according to scripture — Goliath had 9.
Actually, the word ‘brother’ is nowhere to be found in the Hebrew text regarding Elhanan and Goliath (2 Samuel 21:19). It was added by some English translators (the NIV and the KJV, namely) to make it harmonize with the David story better.
So, it’s actually not “scripture”, per se. It’s an editorial gloss.
But I digress…
You can vaguely see a Super Star Destroyer crashing in the background of the first pic. So I guess that IS what the Falcon flies through in the teaser.
Actually I’m surpsed JJ didnt open the film with the Battle itself, instead of the aftermath. He probably wanted to but Kasdan reeled him back in for story purposes.
I guess it makes more sense for those ships to have been there for a while just for Rey’s history.
Kasdan is pretty much my only hope at the moment. I have no love for Abrams nor trust his ability to care for Star Wars. Certainly not being Director, Producer and half the screen-writing team.
Opening the film with a battle that takes place 30 years prior to the main narrative isn’t the star Wars style.
“Jakku is basically a junckyard planet.”
And its funny how no one threw up arms over Geonosis resembling Tatooine, but have one desert planet and everybody goes nuts.
“I hate the sand its course and gets everywhere.”
The sand on Geonosis is clearly red while the sand on Jakku is exactly the same color as the the sand on Tatooine, making Geonosis different from Tatooine and Jakku. That’s why at the time people didn’t seem to have a problem. Plus you where watching AOTC and sand coloring is the least of that films problems.
But i agree is funny what fans will latch onto to nitpick and complain about, while other small details seem to go by unnoticed. Then again if Jakku was a snowy planet or a swamp planet we would be all up in arms about close it is to Hoth and or Dagobah. Hoefully its different enough to be its own planet we can all except and love in the end.
Jakku should have something that makes it unique. Every desert on Earth has it’s own identifying features. How much more should two separate desert planets. If nothing else it’s just good visual storytelling.
My guess is they thought that having Star Destroyers and various rebels ship wreckage on the ground would be interesting/different enough to make it different from other desert worlds. Not really defending JJ and CO at this time but really want to give them the benefit of doubt at this time.
Its seems George Lucas made it difficult for JJ and CO. to come up with new and different world, because GL used all the basic locations in the OT. Desert = Tatooine, Snow = Hoth, Forrest = Endor, and so on. Hopefully Skillig Michael location will yeild us a new planet thats new and feels different from the rest.
Yeah, that’s one aspect of Star Wars worlds that is nice, but always thought we should also see some worlds that had more then one environment. At first I didn’t like Naboo since it was too Earth-like over all. But then I thought, at least that’s different then a planet with only one environment. I’ll bash the prequels as much as anyone but at least they introduced different types of worlds like Coruscant, Felucia, and Utapau. In fact, I read Lucasfilm has come up with a plethora of unique worlds Abrams could have used or adapted. I can just imagine how much cooler those worlds would have looked if they had gone for more natural (not orange monotone) lighting and yes, more use of practical effects.
There you go, bringing color into it… At least practical effects embrace everybody and every color of sand…
Does it say anywhere specifically that Jakku is completely a desert planet? Maybe its like Earth where there are areas of desert, but there are also areas of plains, tundra, jungle and all sorts of other biomes.
I thought that initially it will be green planet and actually after this battle planet become desert
“The pivotal moment when the New Republic confronted key Imperial holdouts on a remote desert planet.”
So the celebations at the end of ROTJ were pretty moot. considering it would take another 30 years to eliminate the rest of the Imperials?
Nah, not moot. The Emperor was the biggest bad of all (not to mention the 2nd Death Star), so defeating him was definitely worth a galactic celebration (or even just some Yub Nub action).
But the Empire was a huge entity, a military machine like no other, spread across the galaxy, with a lot of powerful people invested in it. It only makes sense that it would be more difficult to bring it down than it was to raise it.
When Palpatine made the Empire, there was nothing to stop him (he controlled the only possible opposition), and he spent 20 years growing its might.
Always more story in the future there is…
i’m buying a ps4 for this game and fallout 4
it is so good to see that there are massive battles the level of Geonosis and Coruscant in post-OT era
This takes place after the battle of Endor? So why is Vader there and why does the voiceover mention that he’d “love to see the Emperor’s face now”? They’re both dead at this point.
The funny thing about empires is that there is no shortage of emperor wannabes just waiting for their chance to claim the throne.
While I have no hope for Battlefront as a game, the artwork here looks really cool.
OOooohhh I do hope we will be able to crash land our X-wings and speeders in the sand and snow and keep fighting on the ground!!
Akbar says at the end “I wish I could see the Emperor’s face right now”.. Isn’t he dead…?
soon after the battle of Endor,
Dead! but not forgotten at this time
I also see Twin Suns in the game footage
hmmmmmm!
“The video below is from E3 2015 and is about the Co-Op Missions titled “Survival Mode” on Tatooine.”
that vid is old content derp, and is Tatooine (twin suns), and most likely pre-Endor (Emperors face)
Agree 100%. That’s not Jakku and that battle happens before Endor.
I don’t think you can destroy the AT walker with just a blaster ….
SUPER STAR DESTROYER in the background of the new pic! What a great link to the first teaser trailer, really keyed for the fanboys (& girls). Great job lucasfilm story group…
So if this takes place after ROTJ, Why does Ackbar say “I’d love to see the look on the Emperor’s Face” when you win?
C O N F I R M E D.
Andy Serkis is Darth Plagueis. Luke is guarding the tomb. The lightsaber is the key.
CONFIRMED.
