Podrants and Pomojema Talk Star Wars Cartoons!

Podrants Toons

The guys at Podrants (who I have podcasted with previously) were nice enough to invite me back onto the show. This time, we talk about Star Wars cartoons… And we leave no stone unturned, as we start off with talking about the animated segment from the Star Wars Holiday Special and go from there.

WARNING: THESE SEGMENTS HAVE COLORFUL LANGUAGE IN THEM, SO IF YOU ARE AN OLD, BORING PERSON WHO CAN’T HANDLE THAT, OR ARE IN THE PRESENCE OF OLD, BORING PEOPLE WHO CAN’T HANDLE PROFANITY, YOU MIGHT WANT TO KEEP THE VOLUME DOWN.

Anyway, while Sharky was present, Stephanie was not having just been exhausted from a camping trip that apparently involved copious amounts of alcohol (she did pop in for a brief spell, but I’m not sure if Sharky edited that bit out or not). Instead, her husband Mike covered for her.

Part One: We have fun with British stereotypes (fret not, I do have quite a bit of Brit blood in me), discuss how bad the Star Wars Holiday Special was before getting into how the cartoon in it was surprisingly good (at least for its time), mention the odd appearances of the cartoonified characters in the short, get to talking about the debut Boba Fett (along with his color scheme), explain that the cartoon is an Easter Egg on the Blu-Ray of The Empire Strikes Back, start talking about the Droids and Ewoks cartoons, bring up Kybo (not Kylo) Ren, discuss how Droids served as prequels before the Prequel Trilogy, talk about the ineffectiveness and technical specifications of the Great Heep, chat briefly about the old Sonic The Hedgehog cartoons, analyze the shift in technology from the various eras of Star Wars, briefly touch base on The Force Awakens, talk Football/Soccer, bring up Yankee/American stereotypes (it’s only fair, since I opened up that can of worms in the lead-in to the podcast), chat Doctor Who, and mention how the second-to-last episode of this season of Game Of Thrones ended very similarly to the arena battle near the end of Attack Of The Clones.

Part Two: (Somewhat NSFW.) We get into Ewoks, talk about how the Ewoks in the show were furry versions of The Smurfs, the Grinch-looking minions of the witch terrorizing the Ewoks, the appeal of Star Wars for family audiences (and how to exploit them with merchandise), Ewok gender-confusion, the fact that Ewoks are primates (not teddy bears), the terrifying potential of what self-aware bears could do, me acting like I know a great deal about evolutionary biology and speculating that Ewoks are only semi-evolved compared to other sentient species, if Wookiees are just big Ewoks, how pre-Disney canon tiers made absolutely no sense, the original Clone Wars miniseries (and how much each segment could do with so little time), how the miniseries arguably filled the gap between Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith than the extended CGI show did (at least in terms of pacing), favorite segments, Durg, Asajj Ventress, General Grevious, a theory that the shorts exist in-universe, Shaak Ti’s many potential deaths, getting into The Clone Wars and the many familiar faces found therein, the many Clone Troopers of the show, me mentioning that Ahsoka Tano is kind of hot (while the hosts refuse to let me live this down), and me promptly knocking over my microphone’s popfilter (which is mistaken for a bong).

Part Three: We chat about how extensive The Clone Wars was in terms of content, name some of the voice talent lent to the show by various celebrities, bring up the characters introduced in the show, briefly note the ambiguity of Ahsoka’s fate and its impact on Rebels (which we smoothly transition into), I run Sharky through a quick lowdown on the main characters of the show, debate the Jedi Master occupational hazard, the smaller scale of the battles, hopes that Biggs Darklighter and Jek Porkins will eventually show up, what I like about the canon revisionism now that they don’t have to worry about lining everything up with Legends (and some odd discrepancies on Hutt biology between the two continuities), a brief primer on that one insane episode of The Clone Wars where Ziro The Hutt and Sy Snootles were an item (and a… memorable exchange between the two characters), a discussion about the first Lego Star Wars cartoon (Revenge Of The Brick) and the terrifying character models they used, me going way off tangent describing one of my favorite Let’s Plays while Sharky and Mike are left bewildered at what the Hell I’m talking about, and an impromptu falsetto delivery of “Everything Is Awesome”.

Stay tuned for more updates as the podcasts go up!

Hello prequel haters? Why are you guys not going on about how the star wars holiday special was trash?

Maybe because you thought the holiday special was good.

I add updates to the article to link to the other episodes. The podcast was about 3-4 hours in length, cut down to four 15-20 minute segments.
