Greg Grunberg: The Force Awakens is All About Story and Family

GregFor some weeks now we’ve been investigating Greg Grunberg’s character from The Force Awakens, and we managed to unveil plenty of details, including that he is playing an X-Wing pilot in the Sequel Trilogy. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor shared some new minor details about the upcoming movie, while discussing his excitement for the project…

Excerpts from EntertainmentWeekly:

Q: I assume you’re on lock down about your Force Awakens role but is there anything you can tell us?

A: I can’t talk about who I play or what I did. But just imagine that you get a call from your best friend saying, “It’s true, I’m doing Star Wars and you can stop begging me, yes, I want you to be in this movie.” It was an absolute dream come true. Like there were moments when J.J. would yell, ‘Cut’,’ and then come over to me and go, ‘Are you f–king kidding me? Did that just happen? Did I just pan from C-3PO to R2-D2 to Han Solo and then to you?’ I spent seven weeks in London and it was heaven.

Greg Grunberg

Q: I know you can’t talk about the content of the film. But just in terms of your sense of the film, how it’s going to compare to what’s come before…

A: I can only say that practical effects are as important—if not more important—than the special effects. And it’s all about the story and family. I mean that’s what J.J. is all about. And these new characters, these actors are unbelievable. They’re so well cast. We got our script pages, only the scenes that we were in. Not even what was being shot that day! It was all on red paper so we couldn’t copy it or take a picture of it. And then we had to give the script pages back at the end of the day.

Q: Speaking of the trailer, how much of the scope of the movie do you think that gives you a sense of? Are there like massive set-pieces that aren’t even hinted at?

A: I don’t know! I have not read the full script. Harrison [Ford] and Carrie read the script, they had a roundtable in the early day—I wasn’t part of that. Everything I see I get more excited about. Everything looks like a poster. Every shot I’ve seen I’m like, “That’s a poster! That’s such an iconic image.” It’s really being done the right way. Disney is so brilliant to have done what they did, with all the other films they’re doing on individual characters, really squeezing this franchise in a really good creative way.

I assume that last bit about Disney doing other films based on individual characters was just a wild guess by Grunberg. Or is it? At least we know Rogue One is not based on an individual, but probably the second Anthology movie is…

Star Wars a movie about “story and family” would be another attempt to try what George Lucas tried to build with “little Ani, Qui-Gonn and Shmi (if not Padme also).” This is a rag-tag adoptive family just like in 1977’s ANH brother and twin sister re-unification process in Lucas’ vision after the horrifying deaths of both foster parents (must have been for Leia also because Bail Organa was not evident in classic trilogy). I wish whomever talks about Star Wars recites the proper passage that Emporor Palpatine stated more clearly,”Your faith in your friends (!? Not family) will be your undoing!” — If J.J. Abrams hires his friend Greg Grunberg let us hope it will not be his undoing for TFA representing the true nature of Star Wars fans connected also in rag-tag friendships rather than families of marriages. I won’t get into any true meaning of biblical Scripture support of Lamb and apostles theological teachings that probably went into all Star Wars-theme family of friendship built by some sacrifice.

  • June 23, 2015 at 1:16 pm

When actors are pushing the practical effects more than anything else in almost every interview, then that is a bit worrisome for me. I just hope it is a good fun movie, but I do wonder why they don’t promise people that the story is better or more amazing as much as the effects in all these interviews.

    • June 23, 2015 at 4:50 pm
      Permalink

The actors are fans too and are probably relieved after the CGI filled prequels.. and like grunberg said, they don’t know the whole story yet

    • June 23, 2015 at 5:45 pm
      Permalink

I think it has to do with a general assumption that people were upset with the prequels because of the over-reliance on CGI (whether or not this is true is an entirely different debate). I think that Disney really wants to distance themselves from the Pre-Quels as much as possible. I think it is just a marketing ploy, and has nothing to do with the quality of said film.

Of course we have to take these comments with a huge grain of salt simply because he is best friends with JJ and is going to talk up the movie no matter what.

In saying that, I still like that most interviews I have heard from the cast talks more about the characters/story then the action/effects.

I honestly don’t go to the movies in the summer anymore, becuase they are bland action type movies that don’t develop the characters and rely on special effects to wow people. That can work in the short-term, but these movies will be forgotten in years.

Jurassic World is a perfect example of a movie that is making alot of money right now, but will anyone care about it 5-10 years from now? Are there any characters in the movie that are fleshed out to make them interesting? Is there any real dramatic moments that you will be talking about years from now? Are there are any one liners that will catch on in pop culture? No, it was a nice action movie that entertained people that will look hollow years from now when watched again on cable.

Star Wars has always attempted to be more then that. What makes the OT movies great 30+ years later is the characters, the story, the mythology, the dramatic moments, the humor, and the great one liners. That is what is lacking in today’s blockbusters as they are generic as the next one. Can TFA accomplish what the OT did? We’ll find out in 6 months, but atleast they’re trying to be something more then your average blockbuster like Jurassic World and The Avengers.

    • June 23, 2015 at 4:21 pm
      Permalink

      Get past that comparison.

Jurassic World and TFA are FOLLOWING their legendary franchises. Ipso facto, they CANNOT recreate that magic. Jurassic World did a decent job of continuing the more compelling storylines/themes of the original movie than its predecessor sequels (weird English) did.

Yes, TFA should do better than that. But you can’t expect it to be another legendary movie that sets a precedent like the OT. That’s impossible. The PT got nowhere close and likely comprised some of the OT themes (cinematically anyway, Clone Wars and Rebels have made up ground). But as long as its better than Jurassic World (not saying much, more than a paint by the numbers film, then we should be happy. But people here won’t be happy, and that might just be their problem.

      • June 23, 2015 at 6:36 pm
        Permalink

No doubt it won’t equal the magic of the OT, heck ROTJ didn’t even equal ANH & ESB. But my point is that summer blockbusters don’t even try anymore to be anything more then an entertaining popcorn flick that you can leave your brain at the door. Its just like all of the crap thats is on TV today like reality shows, CSI, Dancing with the stars, etc. Then you go to Cable and see great shows like Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, where they actualy have some substance.

So my point is that the ST movies can have substance in them instead of worrying about dazzling people with special effects. It atleast looks like JJ & Disney are trying to give us more then your average blockbuster. Lucas cared more about special effects as you look at TPM and he was more worried about Jar Jar, The Pod Race and the Duel compared to any characters in that movie.

      • June 23, 2015 at 6:36 pm
        Permalink

It’s not impossible. The Prequels sucked, in part, because the characters were boring, creepy, sexless and annoying. I trust Disney to put the focus back where it belongs.

I don’t think it’s at all unreasonable to expect the new Star Wars films to hold itself to the same high standard as the OT.

Also, I didn’t care about any of the characters in Jurassic World, unlike Jurassic Park. So yeah, it will be largely forgotten long-term.

        • June 23, 2015 at 11:12 pm
          Permalink

Agreed. The prequels were made by a guy with the mindset that he promised his wife he’d build those shelves for the bedroom but never got round to it, finally deciding to get it done. He also wanted to mimic how Star Wars revolutionised film making, by doing so much on green screen with a crazy amount of CGI, much of it truly unnecessary, if more cost effective (though I even wonder at that sometimes). This need to do something new never helped those films. Jar Jar did look great, but sadly the character was ridiculous. Every one else besides perhaps Qui Gon fell flat. Indeed he managed to undo some of the magic we knew of Star Wars and make it about hum drum science with his midichlorians nonsense.

I think this new Star Wars film, instead made by a fan, who also happened to grow up into a very capable and impressive film director, will at least try and recapture some magic, and from what we know will do so using similar themes, but told in a new guise. I’m happy with this. I’m happy with how visually it is coming together. Modern, but timeless (THOSE X WINGS OVER THE WATER… THAT CRASHED STAR DESTROYER..!). I’m more excited for this than I was for any of the prequels after I’d seen TPM.

I suppose it is about time to end practical effect vs CGI talking. We all know Phantom menace has a lot of practical effect which was not realistic on screen. The bottom line is design, direction, lighting. In Star Trek , JJ Abrams had a lot of real set which struck as cartoonish in screen in my opinion.

    • June 23, 2015 at 4:30 pm
      Permalink

The Gonk Droid is cartoonish – it walks with two legs….its funny and quaint, but an awful ‘effect’.
So is wolfman, the giant nose dude and the big preying mantis in the Cantina scene.

      That’s not exactly the point.

TPM was probably the best prequel regarding its balance of both Naboo looked beautiful basically because it was Italy. Some of the wider shots of Coruscant looked great, and the podrace scene is still awesome. The hangar with the Naboo fighters gave a sense of tactile

AOTC was terrible in overuse. Any scene on Geonosis was awful. Thousands of CGI clone troopers gets boring immediately. Coincidentally, people hate AOTC more than the other two.

Revenge is ok because Ewan Macgregor is great in the fight scene and Ian Mcdiarmid is the man. That distracts you from the lightshow behind them.

Its about the story and characters, PRACTICAL EFFECTS, practical effects, practical effects, new actors are so great, really doing it right this time, like the originals, brings back childhood, practical effects, etc.

None of this stuff is really “information” so much as it is more contractually obligated talking point. Everybody is on message like this is a political campaign. There is just too much $$ at stake to have anyone go off message.

I also wonder, how well can an actor know their lines and character with such tight control and time constraints around their engagement with the material? That seems entirely problematic to me.

So it’s likely that 2(possibly 3) of the new characters have familial connections to the Big 3 or other major players from the OT.
The fact that Driver had knowledge of this way back then suggests that his character in one of of those.

I just recently saw “Regarding Henry”, which, incidentally, was written by Jeffery J. Abrams.
And as someone who has had a crippled [now ex-crippled] Dad, and babysat my psychotic giant of a baby-brother, I gotta say Harrison Ford’s rendition of what is essentially both those experiences at once, I thought the film got it SPOT ON with a capital “sp”. – and this is in no small degree due to writing.
The only thing better than Harrison Ford on bad writing:
Harrison Ford on good writing [in this case, Abrams’]

I want to see Ep VII.
    Any questions?

Really? IDK, maybe it’s just me, but I noticed a lot of really well-crafted moments especially on Harrison’s part, but the film’s definitely not for everyone, there’s not very much plot.
But as far as the acting goes, I thought Henry was just as good a role as Deckard or Jones or Solo, though it’s very easy to miss. Like the scenes with him in the rehab center, i thought, were brilliantly acted, at a glance it may look like he’s just acting dumb or something, but the amount of little thoughts and emotions is pretty substantial, he was doing quite a bit of acting, even in the scene where he’s completely unresponsive after surgery, you still get the impression his mind is buzzing trying to figure out what existence is. It’s definitely not a blockbuster type, and not melodramatic enough to count as an “art film”, so I’m not surprised I only just recently heard about it for the first time.

…don`t you think saying “it`s all about family” kinda gives the plot away though? – it`s obvious Kylo is Han`s son & Rey`s brother – and that Kylo versus Rey will be the big storyline of all 3 films.

Some people really need to grow up, lol.

This guy became friends with JJ from working with him. They have a working relationship that obviously carried on into a personal one. NOT the other way round. So talk of nepotism or whatever is just sad. Why shouldn’t JJ use him if he think he fits the role. Harrison Ford struck up a working relationship with Lucas starting with American Graffiti, going on to Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Are we really going to sit here and analyse that.

As for what he’s saying, I’m very happy to hear it. We know it’s not false. We’ve seen more evidence fo real sets for this one film than we ever saw fro the prequels where silly background stuff was mostly done in CGI… no one realising at the time that building these things for real simply lends everything far more credence, and helps the actors place themselves in that world, which all rubs off, whether it’s obvious or not, into what finally gets committed to celluloid.

JJ seems to be doing lots of things right. If he strays too far from what we know of Star Wars people will criticise him, if he sticks rigidly to repeating the OT again, people will criticise him. How about we all just wait and see the finished film. I trust, at the very least it will have more heart, fun and magic than the prequels combined.

As someone earlier mentioned, if TFA is all about “story and family” like Star Trek, then yes indeed, heaven help us.

JJ’s never directed a great film or TV production in his entire career. He may look like Einstein, but don’t be fooled.

He’s an overrated Michael Bay type hack. I don’t know why Disney selected him to begin with. Chris Nolan would’ve been light years better.

Anyway, if TFA turns out to be a worthy successor to the OT, this will quite literally be the first time JJ’s done anything that’s worth jack shit.

George had no extraordinary credit to his name when he made Star Wars.

      Neither did Kershner or Marquand.

So end the self-righteous “Please Me and Nobody Else” rants.

That picture of Greg Grunberg puts me off coming to this site. I don’t think I’ve noticed him in anything else but his gormless “Hey! I’m in with JJ” open mouthed happy face is a task to look at. Hopefully his X-Wing will run out of fuel before take off and Leia will sack him and he has to apply for a job cleaning moisture vaporators or picking up ewok shit.

I know one of the leads of the film and we fucking hate each other’s guts. However, I’m sure they’ll be great in the movie.

The point is… don’t get too caught up about the idea of who these people are in person, but rather what they bring to the table. In this regard, GG is frowned upon as milking his friendship with J. J. Abrams.

I don’t want to be too explicit, but it’s one of the young leads, which could be:

          A) John Boyega
          B) Daisy Ridley
          C) Oscar Isaac
          D) Adam Driver

I won’t confirm which one it is. However, I can tell you that I roll my eyes whenever people say they’re nice, because they’re actually a goddamn lunatic in person. They’re very avoidable, if you get my drift.

I thought J.J. did a terrific job with the first “Star Trek.” It really was about “story” and “family,” in a genuinely emotional way. The second movie got tripped up with the unnecessary “Khan” angle, but I still loved the main cast/characters. I hope J.J. brings that same feeling of “family” to “Force Awakens.”

Nowhere in the OT do you need to fast forward, but the PT the remote stays on your lap.hats off to jj he’s taken on a huge burden and doesn’t seem to be intimidated at all.If he kicks arse on this movie like I think he will I’m more worried about the next one
