Carrie Fisher Hints at Possible Return for Star Wars: Episode VIII?

Carrie FisherShortly after her panel at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, Carrie Fisher spoke with Entertainment Weekly. Among other things the actress dropped a small hint about the involvement of her character with the upcoming movies from the sequel trilogy.

Excerpts from Entertainment Weekly:

Entertainment Weekly: I’m not sure how much you worked together, but did a bond form between you and Daisy on set?

Carrie Fisher: Yeah, I’ve been trying to help her. I’ve been warning her, that’s how I help people. [Laughs.] You know, ‘Get ready!’ Because there is an element of it which is frenzy. And I said to her, ‘Pay attention because you want to remember it.’

EW: You’re a novelist, a screenwriter, playwright. Did you ever try to change what [Leia] says or how she is portrayed?

CF: I do have a reaction to what they write for me, and that has to be a certain way or I’m uncomfortable. In one of the drafts, in one of the sequels, I said, I don’t think I’m right for the part.

EW: For the new movie?

CF: It could be anywhere! [She gives a look that suggests she doesn’t want to specify.] It wasn’t what I thought Leia should be. It didn’t feel like her. Like me. But it’s a combination. I’ve become that. She’s become me, and I’ve become her. Because it’s been a while.  And people call me that, they go, ‘Leia!’ and I go like this: [sweetly, eyes fluttering] ‘…Yes?’ [Laughs] What do they think I’m going to do?

EW: You just hinted at a new look.

CF: I am so self-conscious because I have a big mouth. Everything else is little. But my mouth is huge. So I have to be very careful. All through the beginning when we were starting, and [Lucasfilm] would say, ‘You can’t say that! Don’t say that!’ I was like, ‘You mean I can’t say that? Well if I can’t say that, we’re f**ked.’ Because I’m used to being candid. [Laughs.] So that’s not a good thing to be.

Was that an honest slip? “In one of the sequels”? I think she wouldn’t have used these words if she was talking about TFA. Has Carrie Fisher just confirmed that she will be in more than one of the new sequels?

So far there have been all kinds of rumors about who will probably die in The Force Awakens. Fisher’s words now give us more confidence that Princess Leia will return for Episode VIII and possibly IX.

We really hope so.

I took that to mean the sequels to the original movie. So, ESB and Jedi.

Empire and Jedi are her sequels. Besides, the other sequels are not written yet, I don’t think she refers to treatments or notes.

But why didn’t she say so if it was for the old movies, when asked? It was weird. Of course I could be wrong.

She’s speaking in the past tense when she mentions the sequels. I definitely see where the excitement comes from, but in this case I think she’s clearly talking about Empire and Jedi.

Yeah, I think so too. In the context of the article at that point, it doesn’t make sense for her to be referring to E8 or E9.

If it’s the OT, then my guess would be the slave bikini scenes. If it’s the ST, maybe it’s something like turning Leia into a villain or possibly making her a badass lightsaber- and/or Force-wielding Jedi.

I’m guessing it was for VII and she’s simply trying to be ambiguous about which sequel it is (suggesting it could be V or VI).

Have you noticed that Anthony Daniels has said on that Comlink interview and on stage at Star Wars Celebration the same line, ” R2 and I have now survived six films together…now that’s something for you to think about.”
He has said it with a devilish grin twice already. And I hear his legs are both gold this time around and he has a black arm, just saying that black arm bands are symbolic for death.

Will they keep his CPU ?
        Change his form?
Only time will tell but old goldenrod may go down like the falcon.

Yeah my Dad still calls TESB the “second one”, would not surprise me at all if Carrie shares this outlook.
If it WAS about TFA she would have been on guard to say NOTHING.

She was off guard when she spoke about the sequel, so I’m thinking it’s something that has minimal repurcussions in the immediate scenario [as in, DON’T TALK BAD ABOUT YOUR NEW FILM], so to say this is an allusion to TFA or a later film is a pretty big stretch.

I think she just means the sequels in general,Empire,Jedi,TFA.

The original actors often refer to Empire and Jedi as sequels. Because that’s what they were to them, back then. Move on, there’s nothing to see here.

Fisher once expressed her displeasure about her role being not strong enough in ROTJ , so perhaps she referred to that. Besides , she is likely to apprear in next one for sure.

Maybe a cameo in “Rogue One”? They could always use her to voice Leia and shoot another actress from behind (like a hologram or something). They can’t possibly be looking at scripts for Episode VIII yet?

I would be okay with Luke/Han, either of the droids… or Chewie, dying, but not Leia.

Of course she’ll be in the sequel, as will Luke. But Han? Maybe.

Apart from hiding the stolen plans in R2, thus getting them delivered to Obi-Wan, and enabling the rebels to destroy the Death Star. Yeah, pretty small role.

I always wondered if they have to be forward thinking all the time and plan for the unexpected with contingency’s. What I mean is do you think they have to produce two different versions of a story to make a film about. One with the all the cast they hope to be in it. And a second similar story which can be adapted in a short space of time, if someone falls out of filming suddenly.

I remember she was on Craig Ferguson last December and said the same quote about not feeling they used her character the right way. She was referring to TFA at that time because when she said it the crowd sort of reacted negatively, so she came back and said she was kidding.

I wonder if she was talking about Lucas’s Episode 7 draft where the Big 3 had cameo roles and she probably thought it was a waste of time. JJ & Kasdan rewrote it and gave them bigger roles.

Somehow CF looks creepy to me. She definitely isn’t the hot looking woman she has been. What did she do with her lips?

If She is referencing Episode VII then I agree it was possibly the original draft. Anthony Daniels has commented how great JJ is as an actors director; letting them suggest things and try things in character. The script was changed to suit the original actors. Carrie needs to be feisty, strong and an experienced leader. In Jedi she was a slave. I am certain Leia will be just what we hope for in this new film. As for 3po, I can’t see him being bumped off. Lucas said he wanted the droids to be the constant throughout the entire saga. This film will have the most fluent, forward moving, emotional and spontaneous dialogue and story in the entire saga.

In Jedi she was a slave briefly and by one of the most powerful gangster in the Star Wars universe at the time. It fit the scenario. She ended up fighting in the decisive battle by the end of the movie.
