SW7N Review: Marvel’s Star Wars: Princess Leia #1.

Princess Leia

The first issue of Marvel’s new comic book series Princess Leia is out. Check out our review after the jump.

Excerpt from the review:

This is a great start to the series. In the SW films Princess Leia, has always been known as a badass. She survives torture droids, back talks Darth Vader, shoots out stormtroopers, and chokes Hutts to death. We always knew we were watching someone in action who also was not afraid to embrace her femininity. Mark Waid, this series writer, has begun to flesh out the nuance of everything that makes Leia Organa such a critical part of the Star Wars saga.

Princess Leia

The story picks up literally the second after A New Hope ends. As soon as everyone is done patting each other on the back about blowing up the Death Star a few hard truths set in: the Rebels lost a lot of people in the fight, Alderaan and Bail Organa are dead, and the Empire knows where they are. General Dodonna is wasting no time in starting his search for a new base, and overseeing the packing job is a certain Mon Calamari admiral we know.

This was a good comic (not great, but good). I enjoyed it and look forward to the other 4 issues, but I’m glad it’s a miniseries as I don’t see this working as an ongoing series. It doesn’t compare with the impressiveness of “Star Wars” and “Darth Vader”…still…not bad.

I’m not sure if this is the best art in the world, I think the faces could use some improvement, the colors and composition are good though. It appears they’ve actually got a good story going here,

Not in the vein of ANH at all- it’s like everyone suddenly gets amnesia the second this comic starts. Leia is a team player from start to finish in Star Wars. But in this comic she steals a ship and tricks Dodonna and Luke to go on a personal mission to Naboo. Silly…

The story wasn’t even worthy of being a Star Wars title. The fact that they seem to be pandering to a female audience by making Leia’s sidekick a woman also feels (pardon the pun) “forced”. By, no means am I knocking having a woman heroine, in fact I’m all for it. But, If I was a woman I would feel insulted that they are belittling me like that. Make it a story about powerful women…not throw in some women to appease some people. It just seemed trite, convoluted…and most of all boring.

I’m really excited about where this is going. Before the events of ESB, Leia is brash, irritable and often more impulsive than Han Solo (she’s so much like her Dad in that sense and nobody ever points it out) – but so diverse in personality that she can turn around and still make genuine friends with anyone. I loved seeing her arrogance in this comic and a calm voice in Evaan to call her out on it.

We’ve hardly seen Leia interact with anyone that isn’t Luke, Han, Lando or the Droids (in present canon, not the EU), so I’m really interested in seeing how her partnership with someone more stoic and calculating like Evaan develops.

Also, the planet they’re headed for has me SO EXCITED. I’m waiting to see if her trip there clarifies/cleans up that one line in ROTJ when she and Luke were on the bridge on Endor.

This first issue was boring quite frankly.

Also that ship that Evaan and Leia take to Naboo doesn’t look very Star Warsy.

I liked this one. A lot in fact—better than the two ongoing ones (which I also enjoy). The story they’re developing here seems very promising. Looking forward to seeing OT-era Naboo.

BTW, this was one of the very few times that Star Wars passes the Bechdel test. It rarely ever does (Rebels does, but that show is kind of mediocre, IMO).

I was expecting a lot more out of this comic. I’m kind of disappointed. I didn’t like the art style, the story-line was slow and boring, and they didn’t get the characters right at all. Otherwise, it was okay. I’d give it 2 Stars out of 5.
