Matthew Vaughn Interested In Directing A Star Wars Movie.

matthew vaughn

In an interview with ComicBook.com about his latest movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Vaughn revealed that he would be interested in directing a Star Wars or Indiana Jones movie.

If you recall Matthew Vaughn was rumored to be one of the frontrunners for directing Episode VII. The rumors back in November, 2012 were that Vaughn is in talks with Lucasfilm to helm Episode VII. These rumors were backed up by the comic book writer Mark Millar (worked together with Vaughn on Kick Ass) and actor Jason Flemyng (did 9 movies with Vaughn).

Now here’s what he said to ComicBook.com:

When asked about his passion for movies and working with Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Wanted), Vaughn said, “Mark and I fell in love with movies at the same time. We’re the same age so we both saw Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, you know? Raider of the Lost Ark. And then in the 80s we were watching the same videos three or four times a day. We grew up in that style of filmmaking and what we’re doing is recreating that in a modern manner.”

“If someone offered me Star Wars or Indiana Jones I would be very interested,” said Vaughn. “When you’re the director, you just don’t know. Something clicks and you go, ‘Yup, I wanna go make that story,’ so never say, ‘never,’ to anything but right now I’m in the world of Kingsman so it’s really hard to think about anything else.”

I’m a big fan of his work and I hope to see him soon in the galaxy far, far away.

as far as story, tension, and action he sure is – but as far as polish he is not- He tends to let his CGI work get through at a less than top notch level- this may be because he is colorblind- not sure-

The guy would be perfect if you were making a movie on par with the sequels. On repeat viewing of the acting and dialog of Xmen First Class compared to Days Of Future Past, the acting in DOFP is far superior. I just don’t think he’s a very good actors director. I know it sounds harsh, but honestly go back and compare the two.

That sounds like a great trio to me!

Great suggestions. I love all 3 of them – Vaughn, Cuaron and Wright. 🙂

To me both Edgar Wright and Alfonso Cuaron don’t really fit the bill to me, especially not as final for the trilogy. I think the things Vaughn lacks are easily mitigated through having J.J. as executive producer and ILM doing the effects with the almighty Disney on the overwatch.

I’m voting for Cuaron because Children of Men had more anthropological depth and more of a lived-in feel than even Star Wars requires and Prizoner of Azkaban shows that he also does fun childish warmth in a sincere and beautiful way.

CUARON 100 times! I think he’d make a fantastic Star Wars film. If not in the main trilogy I’d love to see him do one of the spin offs, could give him and Star Wars a chance to do something slightly different set in our favourite universe. Maybe an edgier take on Star Wars. I do hope the spin offs perhaps try some new things but in the same spirit, fi that’s possible. Some extra flair in the directing or whatnot.

I’m not saying this to be unkind but, rather, because I care about the future of Star Wars: Stardust was notably bad in terms of directing. I can’t think of a single image in it that was worth looking at in and of itself. They were even able to make the talented and beautiful Claire Danes look unattractive and unskilled at acting.

Even in X-Men First Class (by far my favorite X-Men film) Vaughn doesn’t display the ability to maintain a picturesque visual style throughout the course of a movie. I love the way Professor X was written and acted but the only image in the entire film that had any resonance AS AN IMAGE was Magnito and Professor X reclining like pals in the night club.

What you guys think about Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz prequel bashing?
    http://furiousfanboys.com/2015/02/gary-whittas-star-wars-replacement-also-hates-the-prequels/
I’m glad they’re out. If they do a movie they will for sure change many things the prequels did and create big plot holes, even if you don’t like the prequels too, you have to agree that they’re 100% canon. If they only ignore minor things like midi-chlorians thats fine, but you can’t change boba fett story, just make him always with his helmet like judge dredd and never mention he is a clone, but do no change the fact that he IS A CLONE.
    What do you think?

    Thanks.

I think I’m not going to let you, Lucasfilm or anyone else tell me what to think about what happened or not in this fictional universe. The word canon means nothing to me in regards to Star Wars.

you jackass. So you’re going to close your eyes and disregard epiosde I, II, and III because you don’t like them? “Who cares about canon! Canon doesn’t mean anything! Wahhhh!!!!”

You sound like a religious Jehovah’s Witness plugging his ears and looking away when someone shows them a science textbook.

He can dismiss all the movies outside the first one if that’s what he wants to do. What’s it to you if he disregards 1-3? Or everything else for that matter.

I’m glad you posted. This is a good example of the militant fanaticism that notions of so-called ‘canon’ create among fans and encourages those who cant tolerate differences of opinion.

Retrotek, that’s a good point. No one person or organization has the last word on what’s canon. For example Dante wrote The Inferno as part of a “trilogy” that included Pergatorio and Paradiso and many scholars categorize the later two as non-canonical. Yes, Disney and Lucas need to have an idea of what they themselves consider canon so they can maintain consistency in the films and still alow flexibility in other areas of licensing but at the end of the day history will do it’s own job of deciding whether a given Star Wars film makes the saga more whole or less whole.

    • February 8, 2015 at 4:22 pm

Nope, I really don’t consider the prequels to be canon. AT ALL. They’re bloody awful and get worse as they progress. TPM could have been good with some more visionary directing and a less political script, less/no Jar Jar and a better child actor for Anakin. AOTC and ROTS were dire bore-fest films that looked like crap and wee so poorly directed and the main man Anakin was played very badly, and equally his part was written terribly and directed terribly. I do not see Hayden Christensen as being the guy who became Darth Vader, not for a second, and to try and do so really ruins the original trilogy for me, so I try and forget about it.

If anything the one thing that Disney buying Lucasfilm could be particularly great is if someday they decide to reboot the prequels and do them right. Going by TFA trailer and what we know it sounds and looks much more like SW than the prequels ever did. I’d like to see the story of Anakin’s downfall done well, and done right, and no Jar Jar and no midichlorians. From an angry Star Wars fan :p

I’ve watched the Preqs a little bit again, they’re better than I remembered them being. I watched Attack of the Clones “Special Edition”, it was better than I remembered, albeit still a mess of a film, I even spotted a new goof in the graphics. The factory scene has C3PO talking to R2-D2, and then NOTHING. C3PO has NO other appearance until the final wedding scene. BIG IMPROVEMENT. Without the insipid Gunganesque slapstick of Anthony Daniels embarassing himself, the film actually has an almost enjoyable flow in the end.
The fight scene is still stupid though. Ani and Padme get captured in 2 minutes. However it turns out the other Jedis were serious when they said “we can handle it”, being able to infiltrate the arena attended by entire Geonosian Army and the most important Seperatist dignitaries. And no noticed anything? Then you have Count Dooku who seems to be actively avoiding killing anyone. Like, does he know Anakin’s supposed to take his place later, what gives? He knocked out ani, took out Obiwans leg, waited around fumbling his lightsaber long enough for ani to get back up, sprint across the room and protect ben, and then when he maims Ani for real, he pushes him away. ?? Does is fight have a point? WTH?
The PT had it’s good points, for AOTC one of the best scenes IMO is where Jedi Anakin finds an old impoverished Watto asking about his mother.
The PT is a little too much into it’s own head, and looking up the Ring Composition theory, I’m more convinced, this is a trilogy, which in an effort to depict a confused mess of a time period, has made a string of plot-heavy shopping-list films. Every scene feels rushed, pacing-wise. Every scene feels like it can’t wait to swipe to the next scene for the sake of runtime.

In a way, lots of ways actually, Christopher Nolan and 21st century George Lucas have an almost identical directing style. Think about it, Dark Knight Rises, and for that matter, the Non-Joker parts of Dark Knight as well, share the same exact problems that plague PT. From what I hear, Interstellar is worse. Both directors can be good, but they both can really psyche themselves out with the mind-games.

In summation, I have no idea whether I agree with the above comment or not.
        I’m as confused as Padme.
The PT were bad, but they shouldn’t be replaced. Not until I get into directing anyways 😉

If Josh Trank is getting the shaft (I’ve heard that he might be, if the rumors about Fantastic Four’s troubled production are true), then I think he’d work as a good replacement.

I hope Josh Trank stays on. Judging purely by the trailer for Chronicle he seems like the best of the spinoff directors. Although the trailer for Godzilla looked awesome as well.

We should start a competition on who has the best Non-Script. We should also have a Most Absurd category with prizes ranging from 1 Donut for 2nd place, a half-melted teaspoon for 3rd place and a dancing santa for 1st place. Alternative first prize in the event of the runner-up being a gun-toting sociopath who demands a tie: The second runner-up will do their best wookie impersonation. No money will be refunded in the event of a drop-out due to depression/boredom/having something better to do.
