Leonard Nimoy – In Memoriam

leonard-nimoy

As most of you have probably already heard, we lost one of the great ones today. Leonard Nimoy has passed away at the age of 83.
More after the jump…

All of us here at Star Wars Episode VII News were saddened today to learn of the passing of Leonard Nimoy. Star Wars fans though we may be, I think that most of us grew up with Star Trek too, which means we also grew up with Nimoy and his iconic character, Mr. Spock.

Tributes have been making their way across the internet and back since the news broke this morning, including a particularly heartfelt one from J.J. Abrams, who directed Nimoy in 2009’s Star Trek reboot and in 2013’s second installment in the new Trek series, “Star Trek: Into Darkness.” Abrams tweeted his thoughts on Nimoy’s passing a little while ago:

And speaking of tweets, Leonard Nimoy had been making some rather philosophical posts on his own Twitter account recently, and his final one, posted this past Sunday, reflected beautifully on the fleeting nature of life:

I cannot think of a more perfect summation of a long and fascinating life than this.

This has been an unexpectedly difficult article to write. Though the news today was not unexpected, it still really hit me sideways. It’s been surprisingly easy to resist the urge to indulge in trite puns about “the final frontier”, or in the most painfully obvious Star Trek movie references. There is already plenty of that springing up all over the ‘net as we speak. The bottom line is, I’ve always been a fan of Nimoy’s work, and it is nigh on impossible for me to fathom a world without him in it. We will all inevitably go through similarly difficult times over the next decade or two as more of our favorite actors from the Star Wars films begin to leave us. As the line from an old favorite song of mine goes, “Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.”

Spock-Leonard-Nimoy

And while he was here, Leonard Nimoy certainly made a tremendously positive and unforgettable impression on millions of people around the world. To say he will be missed is a major understatement. But, at the same time, how fortunate we all were to have “known” him, if only through the character that has now immortalized him.

Clear skies to you, Leonard… and thanks!

“We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted that in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most… human.”

Lucas has credited Star Trek as inspiration. Without Trek, there might not be Wars.

Also, let those in the community mourn if need be–it is terrible taste to seek drama when a person passes.

I really do believe that if a famous actor from star wars died heaven forbid. But if they did most star trek related websites would do the same thing and have a respectful article dedicated to it. They all fall under the sci-fi umbrella no matter what film it is. Any sci-fi website no matter what its theme would do it also. I`d like to bet without looking most sci-fi websites have or are in the process of doing it. If you think how long he`s been in the business and what he`s contributed.

Mr. Nimoy was a great artist and an icon and this article was a great tribute to his work and life. Thanks again SW7N for the great work.

Just love how controversial posts are removed despite the fact that they relate directly to the topic on hand and are not actually offensive in language or anything, but merely opinions.

          @Viral Hide

I was just wondering have you ever thought about switching to https ? I really respect you for allowing people to post anonymously, and that you previously did not censor people. Shows good character on your part. Almost like allowing freedom of speech on a miniature scale, and the right to an opinion.

Its costly but with https more people would sign up and post with a real life name. In a post snowden revelation internet many of us appreciate the respect for privacy. That sounds really stupid but you`ll be amazed just how many people think like that now. tentacles reach far and wide even to something as insignificant as an entertainment website.

Also https website and forum plus an encrypted tip off email you`d get more leaks from people without fear of reprisal. How can they prove take down requests if they can`t see it or know what it is.

Laugh all you want at me, but there is some truth in what I say even if its small.

Viral I have seen some huge debates in this comments section (that I have found offensive to very large degree) never taken down so when a little post is taken down because it happen to slightly criticize the post I am actually somewhat amused. Are you going to go back and completely remove all of the racial debates from 2014?? Or will those stay, it being better to leave offensive debates about people who are still alive than it is to make a single comment about a person who is dead?

          Just asking.

Its funny I grow up pretty much a fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek. Over the years though Star Wars has probably taken up much more of my time than Star Trek has. But when I get into Star Trek I really get into it so much so that nothing else matters. If someone kidnapped me and locked me away and told me that for the rest of my life i could only watch either Star Wars or Star Trek i’m not sure what answer i would give. The thought of not having either to is awful to think about. Without “Trek” there is no “Wars”. With that being said this is really one of the saddest moments ever.

Live Long and Prosper Leonard Nimoy. Now and into the 23rd century.

I can see some Blake’s 7 cast members going soon, too – Gareth Thomas, in particular, has been looking terrible in recent appearances. 🙁

Years ago, the grown ups would say, “You can’t learn anything watching T.V.”
They couldn’t possibly have been more incorrect. We tend to pay closer attention to the things we’re interested in, and nothing interested me more than T.V., and nothing on T.V. interested me more than STAR TREK. It’s the first place I heard words like, “logic and computer”. No words have had so great an impact on my life in a scholastic capacity, and no personality such as Leonard Nimoy’s (Spock) character. Had it not been for this gentlemen’s achievements, I would’ve, almost certainly, remained on a route leading to jail or worse. His example has been an immeasurable influence. He will surely be missed. He did, most certainly, Live Long and Prosper. And Now, may he Rest in Peace.

Into The Great Beyond. God Speed.

Man this has been a rough year, first Seymour Hoffman, then Robin Williams, then Joan Rivers, now Leonard Nimoy.
All of my favorite people are passing away, and I’m only 18, and “my” generation of “actors” is not promising. I was born in the wrong decade.
Nimoy seems to have had a good life, he used his time well and was liked by everyone he met. There really should be more people like him. RIP

We lost a true pioneer of Sci-Fi and one of the few actors who actually cared about his role, the franchise and the fans. I will forever be grateful for the good times from watching Star Trek and the many shows and movies like Star Wars that owe part of their existence to Star Trek and the very popular Mr Spock brought to life by him. Mr Nimoy is the quintessential figure in the history of Star Trek. He more than Gene Roddenberry, William Shatner or anyone else associated with the legendary franchise personified the best of Star Trek both on the screen and off.
