With the rumors of Luke guarding a tomb and stuff like that, I have actually lost a little of the excitement. Of course, I can’t know for sure that EU-like plot elements *will* feature in EPVII, but between EU weirdness and a rehash of EPIV, I have to admit that, indeed, I’m not as hyped as I was around trailer time.

There’s just no way they can pull this off the way fans hope they can. I think EP7 is even more loaded this time than EP1 because now there’s an added layer of ‘we need to atone for the sins of the prequels’ … combine that with the inherent anticipation and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. JJ seems pretty nervous in most of his interviews now, and I just feel really badly for him; this was kind of a no-win scenario. The film has to be ‘great,’ the fans will NOT accept ‘ok.’ ‘Ok’ may have worked when the prequels came out, but they were so bad that everyone is demanding greatness now in recompense.

      Good luck with that !

Well, I do like Harrison Ford and just not give a damn :/ solves a lot of problems. Do you think George really cared if people got upset about how he A New Hope? no, that’s what I thought… JJ gonna do what he gonna do and I’ll respect him until he starts apologizing.
People don’t like Seth Rogan because Rogan apologizes, for a comedian to apologize suggests they don’t want to be offensive. In a way Rogan’s career is back on track because he pissed off the one guy who’s more disliked than he is.
If JJ makes another bad-film, he’ll have to piss off a dictator soon if he has any sense of job-preservation. JJ would do well to mark my words.

Luke guarding a tomb seems appropriately mythic to me, as though Joseph Campbell and Laurence Kasden came up with it while waiting for the sunrise in Pompeii. The tomb robbing/guarding theme also seems apropo of our hopes and anxieties about revisiting something sacred like Star Wars. Exploring the hopes and fears of Star Wars fandom through the film itself has a postmodern layer but it could take us to place that’s far more universal than that in terms of humanity’s relationship to the past in general.

Remember, you don’t need a great plot to have a great film, you just need to tell the story correctly. That being said, even if the tomb rumors turn out to be true, I am confident JJ can make an exciting movie, with good performances, amazing visual efects, exciting action sequences. Word of advice, just walk in with casual expectations, you will be amazed by the end. Don’t let your own ego ruin the film for you. Besides, what’s so damn awful about the tomb rumored plot? Sounds solid to me.

JJ created from scratch TFA story has the same authenticity of one of my stories.
Everything, plot, settings, characters, the begin and the conclusion, is pure fanfiction.

How a Star Wars fan can still hype all SW-Disney movie knowing that ?

For you to say this next trilogy has the same authenticity as one of your own fan-
fiction stories is laughable. Other than George Lucas, all the other elements are returning. Original cast, John Williams, Lawrence Kasdan, etc. They are even using Ralph McQuarries original concept art for inspiration. If Mr. Lucas had a brilliant vision for the sequel trilogy then he wouldn’t have sold the rights in the first place. He’s passing the torch.

        Let’s apply that logic.

“Return of the Jedi did not have the input of Gary Kurtz, the true co-creator of 1977 Star Wars and on-hands producer of Empire Strikes Back, therefore, Return of the Jedi is not authentic Star Wars.”

        • February 9, 2015 at 8:32 pm
          Permalink

Kurtz was just the producer, not “co-creator.”

          • February 9, 2015 at 9:49 pm
            Permalink

I have little trouble stating that Gary Kurtz has just as much impact on the success of the original movie and ESB as George Lucas did.

I’m sure Lucas is a fan of his work, does that make everything he did after the original Star Wars fan fiction as well? Is every Bond movie ever made fan fiction? Applying the term fan fiction to fiction is fucking dumb as shit. If you’re implying that without Lucas none of the stories are “real,” then you should probably take a long look in the mirror and then shoot yourself in the face.

I quite like the tomb guarding rumour thing. As long as Luke isn’t pacing up and down, whistling and looking at his watch. The idea of evil spirits tormenting him and a greater evil inside floats me boat. A third death star does not. Wonder if Boyega uses his brit accent in the film…. the yanks usually portray us as the bad guys/girls. A stormtrooper jolly gooding and spiffing his way around an imperial base would be quite amusing.

So many are so concerned with every tiny detail of the plot and if it doesnt match their expectations then oh well, not excited for the movie. Wont it just be fun to escape into that universe again? to visit other planets, to see xwing fighters and light saber wielding heroes and villians? Starwars is wondrous escapism with some great mythology. Im not saying story, acting, plot dont matter, of course they do, but to decide whether or not youre going to enjoy something based on every little detail..

wont it be FUN to just return to the galaxy far far away. perhaps watching it with wondrous child eyes is the way to go.

George sold it, yet, here we still are. We can love Star Wars without having to wait on George Lucas to comment on it.

one element that i was always curious about was the place on dagobah that was strong with the dark side. i guess it shielded yoda from being discovered, or whatever. i was always very interested to know more about it. maybe a similar plot mechanism is being used; luke hanging out there balances things out. otherwise, it’ll act like a beacon.

Fair enough, JJ still should keep “piss off Kim” in his planner as an option though, that’s my point. I don’t really know Seth Rogan that well, for starts I’ve never met the guy, but I also have seen about 0 of his films. IDK, making a film about assassinating a nuclear power-house and saying “no one should take it seriously, I’m just a comedian” is a little over the line.
What part of Seth Rogan thought it was a good idea to make what might possibly be construed as a punch in the face to the nation that would like nothing more than to destroy the country that his Producers are based in? Everyone’s rooting for him and all that but damn! We almost had nuclear war over this film for crying out loud. That kinda’ trumps every other “perfectly innocent” comedy out there. And now Seth Rogan is the pillar of American free speech, after giving Sony yet another reason to stop making films.
So yeah, if JJ wants to move forward anytime his career goes down, he should do what I just explained to be a bad idea. Because… …. .. .

SW is Lucas, Lucas is SW.
A SW film usually has a macguffin.
The films are deliberately set up as a mirroring effect, a symphony in many parts to allow the generations to face similar moral problems, as well as visually mirror each episodic counterpart.
From a general public-viewing POV, expect TFA to deliberately mirror TPM and ANH, and utilise that *familiarity* ; there may be some slight variations in plotting to throw it out to Eps 8 & 9, and these later episodes might well mirror 2,3,5,6 respectively. Eps 8 & 9 might even lead out to wholly original content / plotting. GL had wanted to promote the idea of moral questioning in the ST, so, for example, the rumours of Leia discovering a Republic-made DS3, or Luke guarding a potent weapon, might well tie-in with such moral anguishing ! The (great) PT presented loyalty and treachery, the (great) OT presented hero and villain and generational reconciliation. Let’s see what TFA gives us and what TFA as *part of the ST* will give us.

its going to be banging’ don’t panic, just expect a little change and evolution, like your favourite band evolves, as will this franchise. soak it up, enjoy the entertainment for what it is. and respect the hard work and dedication that goes into something we all clearly care so deeply about. If you sit back in the cinema with the right attitude, you will love this film, I’m sure of that.
