Anthony Daniels on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Harrison Ford and More.

C-3PO & Han Solo

TheComlink caught up with Anthony Daniels at the EMP Museum of Seattle and discussed C-3PO’s costume, his twitter comments, The Force Awakens, Harrison Ford and more.

In the interview Daniels talks about the big amount of practical sets used in The Force Awakens and also revealed that Harrison Ford is even funnier and wittier than in the OT.

Good point about the practical, it is, it’s a valid point, especially coming from him.

Maybe everyone on set talks about practical effects so frequently because they found the experience refreshing.

It reminds me of Ian McKellen crying on the set of the Hobbit, over having to work in a green-screen set instead of interacting with his colleagues, “This is not why I became an actor.”

I can totally see how being in a green box could stifle an actor’s ability, motivation and energy. Sure, there were many practical effects in the PT, but Abram’s seems to have built the GFFA on a deeper level. Better immersion for the cast & crew = better immersion for us.

      I cannot wait.

“Maybe everyone on set talks about practical effects so frequently because they found the experience refreshing.”

More likely they were told to as part of the publicity points to make as that is what everyone all the way up to Bob Iger himself is talking about. Of course never mind that ROTS had in excess of 67 sets most of them real and practical whatever that is actually supposed to mean.

“It reminds me of Ian McKellen crying on the set of the Hobbit, over having to work in a green-screen set instead of interacting with his colleagues, “This is not why I became an actor.”

LOL! Well since Gandalf is not the same size as the other characters they kind of had to do it that way. The practical effects of each SINGLE prequel is more than the ENTIRE OT combined and the number of sets and miniatures is probably unparalleled in movie history.

Read comments from the OT actors on the OT with all the “practical sets” and they are as lost and confused.

        How did that happen?

“I can totally see how being in a green box could stifle an actor’s ability, motivation and energy. Sure, there were many practical effects in the PT, but Abram’s seems to have built the GFFA on a deeper level. Better immersion for the cast & crew = better immersion for us.”

        Like Sam Jackson says:

“I don’t understand these actors who talk about how difficult it is to act with nothing there. I was an only child so most of the time I was always playing against something that didn’t exist. It’s called using your imagination.”

I heard he says “poodoo” five times, and “yousa bombad” while he dies in Luke’s arms.

Oh, and he lets out a wet fart in the falcon once he reclaims the pilot seat, sending Max Von Sydow reaching for smelling salts.

And he’s actually married to a rather odd woman he calls Mrs Bennet who is obsessed with lace on everything, even the falcon, and during a battle he calls her because his spidey senses we’re tingling and shouts “no lace, no lace Mrs Bennet!”

Nice interview. And I hope he is right about Harrison being great in EP7. After Ender’s Game, I was like, man, he really took a nose dive as an actor. But surely HF knows this is his last hurrah, last chance to make history. So hopefully he goes all out to make it great.

Yeah, and the Ender film itself was awful and one of the worst ones I have seen. Harrison Ford will become a legend with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

They are using as much practical effects as they can. If you seen the teaser apparently the ball droid bb-8 is a practical effect. The falcon looks CGI, but it looks fine to me. Which it sounds like a happy middle ground.

Guess I´m the only one who actually doesn´t like the Falcon in the teaser, hm? Too CGI, strange angles stressed that even more….

I’ve gotten used to the Falcon’s CGI appearance. At least it looks highly detailed and tangible. I just wonder why the light in the back is bluish-white instead of white like in the OT.

The Falcon in the teaser is definitely NOT a computer generated image. It is a real model comped into the scene using the latest and greatest in film technology. With all this talk of practical effect being a hallmark of this film I would think people have understood this by now. They are using computer technology to enhance the practical effects to make everything look and feel as real as possible.

No, you aren’t the only one. I didn’t have a problem with the CGI Falcon so much as the pointless twisting and turning that the camera was doing. The stabilized version of that shot shows the Falcon pulling a loop move that was impressive as hell all on its own – IMHO that shot didn’t need the camera upstaging the Falcon’s moves.

I absolutely LOVED the “Rebel, Jedi, Princess, Queen: Star Wars and the Power of Costume” exhibit at the EMP in Seattle. The exhibit itself was amazing, and I even got to meet Anthony Daniels in person. He is really hilarious and a great person [Plus, Threepio is my favorite character :D] I also got Billy-Dee Williams signature at Scarecrow video the following day 😀 It’s a good time to be a Star Wars fan in Seattle!

I don’t know for sure if it will happen, but presume it will. If I recall correctly, Anthony Daniels was quoted as saying he was finished filming Star Wars forever once principal photography was completed. Once I saw the concepts for BB-8 and later, the trailer, it seemed to me that the droids were being replaced, as were the Big Three.

I would be so happy if they DO NOT kill off the droids, but I’ve more or less accepted this to be the case.

And I agree with you, the more I hear about the plot and realize how far it is from an original vision for the sequel trilogy, the more thought I am giving to steering clear of it altogether.

Felt that way about TPM as well, and will undeniably feel the rush once it arrives and will probably see it. But honestly, would have been better if they just well enough alone and didn’t make these. What he have heard so far COMPLETELY diminishes the OT.

And, how dare they jettison Lucas’ blueprint for the ST. I hope you are right that it will be “a day long remembered” for good reasons as opposed to being a day where hope went to die.

I swear, if they lay a FINGER on Artoo and Threepio, there will be BIG problems.

These two lovable droids may survive the ST, but Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker will one day die. That’s just reality. I don’t see their iconic roles being recasted, and I don’t see Disney continuing to use remote control to operate R2 afterwards.

I predict Episode X will release within the next 15 years. Kenny’s already 80, and Anthony turns 69 in 3 weeks. Eventually, they will be replaced, just like one day we will all die and be replaced by the next generation. It is what it is.

Well, of course. But I can definitely see Disney using a remote control Artoo Deetoo. I just saw Anthony and Billy-Dee a few days ago, and while Billy-Dee is a bit slow due to his age, Anthony is always on his feet being absolutely hilarious. I’m sure that he’ll act as Threepio for as long as he can 😀

I guess they could replace both actrs then instead of getting rid of the droids.
