Liam Neeson Wants a Qui-Gon Jinn Spin-Off Movie.

While promoting his latest movie Taken 3, Liam Neeson told Yahoo he wants to play Qui-Gon Jinn again in Star Wars. He also shared his thoughts on the crossguard lightsaber from The Force Awakens teaser trailer…

From UK Yahoo (via JediNews):

We asked the 62-year-old actor whether he’d be up for a spin-off film featuring his character and he told us, “Yeah, I’d say so. Yeah, that would be terrific.”

“I certainly loved shooting the prequel [‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’] but that was many years ago now.”

“I don’t know [how he would return], unless you went back in time or he becomes a hologram or something. He’s a Jedi, anything could happen, it’s Star Wars world!”

Neeson says he’s watched the first trailer for ‘Episode VII’ but he has some concerns over the practicality of the cross-blade lightsaber wielded by the mysterious Kylo Ren in the 88-second teaser.

“I had a couple of worries about that lightsaber. I thought if it comes in [towards the body] and is close to you, it’s like having a jet of [burning] fluid hitting your clothes and your skin, but I’m sure they’ve thought that out.”

Liam Neeson can be digitally de-aged through today’s technology. Plus, he is very healthy and fit, so he is like 40 years old mentally and physically. My personal opinion is to NOT make a spin-off. I can write a whole article explaining why, but there is not much of a story with the character. I’d rather not see a spin-off.

Yes…of course he will appear. EU has great stories on him. They can create good scripts using story lines from multiple sources. An animated movie would also be good too. The way the character was used in CW was great.

I would love see him in an old western style with Mace and Plo Koon going on an adventure investigating a missing child. Fighting baddies along the way traveling through barren landscapes searching for this child who is in possession of a relic that is said to have mythical power. Qui-Gon and Mace separate from Plo Koon to fight a band of Pirates.
They discover that the child’s parents abandoned her and the relic was nothing. Instead Plo Koon discovers the child Ahsoka Tano.

Qui-Gon gets way too much praise. His determination to have Anakin trained doomed the Jedi Order. He should’ve been suspended or expelled for disobedience years before Episode I.

Same with Obi-Wan for that brazen threat of defiance against Yoda and the Jedi Council for insisting on training Anakin no matter what.

      The council lacked backbone. :/

The Jedi Order of the prequels had become stagnant and misguided after millennia of serving the Republic instead of the will of the Force. If Qui-Gon hadn’t gone against the wishes of the Jedi order then Palpatine’s victory would have been eternal. It is precisely BECAUSE Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan defied the short sighted demands of the order that Anakin was able to eventually fulfill the prophecy and bring balance to the Force by killing Palpatine.

What you said makes no sense.

If all this really depended on killing Palpatine, why not just have the Force expose Palpatine’s true identity to Qui-Gon or Anakin so they can act upon that insight? Why needlessly drag this out for nearly 40 years and kill all those people just to throw an old man down a shaft?

It makes perfect sense. The Force couldn’t just “expose” Palpatine because — news flash — Palpatine can use the Force, too, and is quite adept at hiding himself. The prequels are largely about the fall of the Jedi due to their own flaws and arrogance. They sowed the seeds of the Empire by driving Anakin away with their mistrust. Even Yoda is noticeably cocky compared to his more humbled persona in ESB. And as a side note, one could also argue that the imbalance in the Force required the (near) extermination of BOTH the Sith and the Jedi, in which case things played out exactly as they were supposed to.

          • January 10, 2015 at 1:26 pm
            Permalink

There can be some debate as to exactly where the Jedi failed and how Qui-Gon fit into that failure but I don’t see how there could be any debate over the fact that Anakin is, indeed, the “chosen one” who must (and does) ultimately restore balance to the Force. The entire Star Wars saga as it now stands revolves around this premise. To deny it is to admit that you didn’t really watch, or at least understand, the movies.

“If Qui-Gon hadn’t gone against the wishes of the Jedi order then Palpatine’s victory would have been eternal.”

Mostly true but I’d add a bit to that. He did point the way. He is what the Jedi of the ST should be like. The Jedi Council was dubious of the return of the Sith and the Chosen One.

Once they realized the Sith were back then they agreed that Anakin needed to be trained. They were blind to the return of the Sith in their arrogance and to Anakin as well.

Qui-Gon could see what they were blind too. If he lived he also would likely have seen through Palpatine as the Sith Lord eventually.

Had Qui-Gon not encountered a Sith himself, he would’ve been just as blind as the others on the matter. And they did end being proven right on Anakin being bad news.

Agreed. Obi wan kenobi said he “sensed something elusive” on the trade federation ship and Qui Gon basically blew it off. So…he would have been just as blind.

Wrong… Without Anakin as a Jedi, the plan of the Emporer would have still went off without a hitch… order 66 would have still been carried out, and the republic would have fell. However, without Darth Vader at his side to eventually bring balance to the force, the empire wouldn’t have been defeated by the rebels and we’d all be having tea and crumpets in an Imperial detention center.

The Jedi order doomed itself. That is what the entire prequel was about. Along with the clone wars. Which that series is amazing even as an adult watching it. People who love Star Wars and haven’t gotten into that show but will watch the other senseless horse crap they put on tv are simply hindering themselves. I guess Lucas should have made it much clearer, instead of assuming people would piece it together. If qui gon trained anakin, he wouldn’t have fallen to the dark side. My thoughts at least. But it is blatantly clear that the JEDI doomed themselves and were in fact what was out of balance with the force. The force has to have good and bad. Open your mind people. If you take that into account, watch the PT AND the clone wars, you’ll see it’s quite a friggin amazing story. The biggest problem was simply Lucas tried to cram too much stuff into 3 movies in which he wrote and directed. If he let other writers in (ex: the clone wars, empire strikes back and ROTJ) the prequels would have been loved.

I actually like the idea in the Kenobi book of Obi trying to focus himself and try to communicate with force ghost Qui Gon while a whole lot of stuff around him was distracting. Much like Luke only hearing from Obi Wan when he was either in dire straits or truly concentrating. It really could make for a good story.

I think that it would do the character much justice if done correctly. Qui Gonna was an important character to the Anakin Skywalker story arc, but he was greatly under utilized in Episode 1 to the point where he was almost useless. If they did a spin off that gave some better character progression and background information, it might HELP the fact that they ruined his character in epsisode 1. I wouldnt mind seeing it with Obi wan as the apprentice sometime before episode 1, or with it being even further back to when he was training under Dooku. Either way it could expand a little more on the Dooku, Qui Gon,Sifo Dyas story. Maybe even throw in Hego Damask? 🙂

  • January 8, 2015 at 5:07 pm

An interesting Qui-Gon story line would be the one that answers why he became so reckless and arrogant with the Jedi Council. A story with a young Qui-Gon who had just became a newly-appointed Jedi from Count Dooku. Perhaps Qui-Gon was manipulated in some way by Dooku which resulted in his great belief in the prophecy “of the one that will bring balance”. Maybe there is great conflict within himself to help his old Master until Dooku disappears. It could end with Qui-Gon meeting Obi-wan for the first time and insisting to train him.

What I’m getting at is, there is really a lot of great back-story here for a young Qui-Gon.

Cool premise mate. But like his charcter, Saruman in LOTR ol’ Dooku wouldn’t have started bad or trained or tried to subvert Qui Gon. Perhaps it would revolve around a disatisfaction with the Jedi order as it stood then, which could invoke some interesting story telling.

I would much rather see him come back as another character. Honestly, when Qui Gon Jinn died in TPM, I didn’t feel as sad as when Obi Wan died in ANH. But that wasn’t Neeson’s fault but the fault of the story and script writer. The Phantom Menace script was awful because the main characters didn’t have good character development and weren’t characters people cared about. Poorly written story and script

I think Liam is a great actor. Loved him in Schindlers List, Rob Roy, and Taken

A live action 1 hour show. When I was a kid I read all the Star Wars apprentice books and they were brilliant! I think a show that shows more about the characters and the adventurous takes of the Jedi especially Obi wan and qui gon who were both pretty reckless at times would be awesome! There is a lack of truly great action adventure shows right now, and I think Disney and the whole world would benefit from a Netflix type series about the Jedi or sith. I’d also love to see a show based more about the sith side and learn more about their lives. Either pre-dating the phantom menace ot post return of the Jedi.

BUT… the really odd thing here is that for over 15 years, I’ve been hearing that Neeson hated Phantom Menace and refused to come back for the other two films. Hence, his voice in Clones was pulled straight out of Phantom Menace and he was missing from Sith which was really quite odd since they took the time to credit his character with starting the whole Force-Ghost phenomenon. To hear that he had fun doing it is quite a surprise! Was all that talk just rumor or were his issues, perhaps, with Lucas himself and, now that Lucas is no longer really involved, perhaps the idea of playing Qui-Gon again seems more appealing? Or maybe he’s just gotten a lot of positive reaction to the role from fans over the years and now looks back on it with more affection? I wonder.

Don’t forget he came back to voice Qui-Gon in the “Mortis” arc of the Clone Wars.

Thanks! I actually didn’t know that and I’m glad to hear it! I’m afraid I got woefully behind on Clone Wars, an oversight I need to remedy! I have been keeping up with Star Wars Rebels though. Anyway, clearly it’s time to start catching up on Clone Wars!
