Han Solo and Chewbacca Concept Art from The Force Awakens?

chewbacca han-solo

Marketsaw claims to have received final concept artwork featuring Han Solo and Chewbacca from The Force Awakens.

My initial reaction was that these are not legit and I refused to post them. Now Jason from MakingStarWars claims that they are legit so go check them out HERE.

They definitely don’t look final to me, so take it as you like. My guess is that this is an early art, not final as the article states. Here Chewie even has a belly. And we’ve already seen from the leaked toy pic and the art with the prosthetic hand that his body didn’t change much from the previous movies.

Not a chance! You don’t have a concept art of a major character (Chewbacca) which features absolutely nothing noteworthy whatsoever! There is absolutely no point in the Chewbacce “concept art”, and very very little point in the Han one.

Agree. What’s the point? So the costume peeps can design up the new trench coat? So the make up people can make Solo look erm 30 years older.. and Chewie.. is that a grey hair I detect?

Concept art is done for small things like that. Pretty much everything needs to have a design on paper so the director can give the go ahead and the crew has something approved they can go by. You can’t always say “give me a outfit” and leave it at that. Nor can you make a full Chewie costume only to be told the director doesn’t like the hair design or the shape of the body.

JJ could have saved millions by eliminating the concept art staff all together…. Because all he’s doing so far is picking and choosing his favorite designs from Episodes 4-6.

You mean like BB-8? Or the broadsaber? Or Rey’s bike? Or the new X-Wing design? Or the new trooper design? Or the two helmets we have seen for Kylo?

Rey’s speeder bike?! Are you seriously calling that a design? Yeah, let’s have her drive a brick. Real imagination there.

I have Star Wars pancake molds in the shape of an X-Wing, TIE Fighter and the Falcon so maybe he has those too? (I also have a Darth Vader spatula)

You guys must use some strange looking bricks and popsicles.
Actually, according to Lucas, the real inspiration was a half eaten hamburger with an olive next to it.

To go from a hamburger with an olive to the side to what we see with the Falcon takes real imagination; to go from a popsicle to that thing just takes an extra stick. So if you want to know what would please this guy; just a little effort and some imagination and a desire to do something new and different then what came before. Is that really too unreasonable to ask for? Come on!

I would think the point of the Chewie one is to make him look like he has put on weight. Not all concept art has to have a big change to the character. Sometimes it is just to have some small idea of how the character might look with some age. I remember seeing a few ep2 or 3 concepts that changed very little from the previous film. Sometimes it is done just to have certain characters beside each other for comparison.

Come to think of it, I think there was a piece of Chewie concept art for EP3 that was basically just good old Chewie, yet they still did it and it was in the concept art book. I think there were a few of R2 and 3PO as well. I’ll have to look them up.

I’m interested in what any of the legacy cast’s role is. They are the part I’m most concerned over. I have total faith in the new comers and their storylines. It’s how to handle the legendary icons of yesteryear that’ll be difficult.

The trench coat makes him look like the pirate class from the old republic game.
I don’t have anything against it as long as they don’t add the cowboy hat… ugh.

I’m a bit sad if Chewie doesn’t get the robotic hand… I thought that was actually sort of a clever idea.

Off topic but for those of you who’ve been watching Rebels… is “spark of the rebellion” essential viewing? I saw it on Amazon but it’s like 8 bucks for a 45 min episode!!! I don’t mind spending 20 bucks for the first season but 8 bucks for a single TV show is a huge rip off. I hated clone wars but it seems like Rebels is better.

I hadn’t seen rebels yet… but I think based on the first episode it’s far more interesting than the clone wars. The animation quality isn’t as static (one of the worst things about watching the clone wars was seeing the stiff movements of jedi’s fighting, laughably bad).

The story seems more interesting as well… there really wasn’t much of a story in clone wars. I only got up to season 5… maybe it took off after that?

So what? Nobody’s thrilled about Han Solo and Chewie being the stoic rocks that ground this trilogy with the others?

Really what this proves is, A: Han and Chewie are more or less the same kind of guys and not some stuffy old men who bi!@$ and moan about politics (Good news)

B: Leia and Luke have very likely undergone changes, thus necessitating Han being grounded and familiar.

and C: Ya’ll are very bored today!

If Hollywood wills it, it is not a dream. It’s not drugs, it’s historical precedent in the market environment.
However, seeing Chewbacca yell at some representative would be AWESOME. Or maybe at a treaty signing or trying to pass a bill on alcohol tax reduction or something. Or him throwing a R3 unit at a Journalist- that I would pay to see, or at least watch on youtube
