Carrie Fisher: I’m Playing a “Legacy Character” in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Fisher 01

Carrie Fisher is in Hong Kong for charity event, trying to raise funds for local children’s charity The Hub. During the event Fisher was asked about The Force Awakens. Find out what she said after the jump to hyperspace…

From scmp.com:

“I’m in it. So are the other people,” she said on Friday, when asked what she can reveal about The Force Awakens, her first appearance as Princess Leia since Return of the Jedi in 1983.

“We’re referred to as the legacy characters. No one knows that,” Fisher said of the tag given to the trio played by herself, Mark “Luke Skywalker” Hamill and Harrison “Han Solo” Ford.

“I always thought that was the worst, oldest word you could ever … It’s something I heard as we were going along: ‘the legacy characters’. That word is very weird to me. It means you have grey hair.”

Fisher 03

When asked to give a message to fans of the movie franchise in Hong Kong, she said:

“The thing is about these movies: they’re part of everyone’s childhood and that’s what’s so extraordinary about them.

“People have known me all their lives – better than I’ve known myself. And they’ve liked me a lot more than I’ve liked myself a lot of those times. That’s what I think is so powerful; it’s these fairytales and there’s going to be more. There’s something so darling. There’s this British word, chuffed. I’m chuffed to be a part of it.”

Fisher 02

“I’m not theoretically Princess Leia, but yes I am. I’m her and she’s me,” Fisher says. “There’s no Mini Mouse so I can’t go hang out with her and say, ‘Isn’t this weird?’ There’s not that many people for me to bond with things over. It’s a very particular experience.”

But when the filming actually started, “it was strangely … ordinary. But then that is sort of my ordinary. It was nice to see everyone in the same room, only half of us looked melted. That’s what legacy means in the original Latin. Melted, once young people.”

It’s from the Entertainment Weekly photoshoot from ’82-’83 so it’s her. You may want to do some research before dishing out false info, even if it’s trivial.

I like that idea that, despite how clueless fans can often be, in some very limited way they know the artist better than the artist knows themself. A fan can be more in tune with the artist’s “best self” and what that represents even when the artist looses that perspective and gets caught up in the compromises of reality. Carrie Fisher is the bomb as we used to say in the gen-X days.

She is definitely cool-ass. I think her past problems have helped her become a more grounded person overall now. Besides, what’s wrong with having a little fun as a young partygirl 😉
Problem was, she just took it too far that’s all and she unfortunately had other issues as well.

She had nice sized ones back then. The Rollling Stone cover for TESB is a good example. There were also other pictures from back then that showed her boobs, she was never flat or small. How dare you suggest that!

WTF?!?! You look at those pictures and have something to complain about?!?!

Also, that’s why Lucas made her tape those puppies down in ANH. They were constantly rolling around all over the place. It was hard for Lucas to concentrate.

If they were stock photos that haven’t seen the light of day for much of the past thirty years, then they can maintain their high resonance and not seem faded. Stock photos usually are kept in files in filing cabinets. Without UV to damage a print, they can last quite a long time and still look almost like new. Still, hey might’ve been airbrushed recently to gloss over blemishes that may be in or on the pic.

She is so articulate and competent at delivering her grounded, often funny observations with a sense of intelligence and class. Compared to the same old drivel that actors and actresses often spout in interviews, playing it safe, making sure they’re nice about everyone, commending everybody’s talent etc. she is such a breath of fresh air. It’s a shame most people are still struggling to comprehend the aging process to notice anything she is saying…

Love Carrie. Her vocal acuity is on point. Far too bright for Hollywood. Would have been great to have her on board to fiddle around with the script’s dialogue to be honest.

    Carrie’s great.
I recently watcher her HBO documentary Wishful Drinking and she’s so cool. How many people can talk about the reality of their drug addiction and still find some humour in that?

I get really bummed hearing these so-called Star Wars fans bashing Carrie Fisher. She looks great for her age and always manages to have unique and positive things to say regarding her role in the SW universe. And as far as her past recreational drug use goes: Get over it kids. So what if she used to party. Don’t bash other people just because you sit around all day masturbating into Almond Joy wrappers while watching Dark Knight Returns over and over. Some folks actually lived life! Hear Hear to Carrie Fisher!

actually I remember reading in the time before time, that Lucas had to tape down Fisher’s boobs as her active scenes, running in stuff n things, things n stuff, had her chest flopping all over the place n stuff, through her flimsy white gown, for those whom are unaware of the fact, because you were either not born or still in nappies lol Yes! Yes indeed! Carrie was a large busted woman, one would assume, that she still is although……..missing…….

That is her in the photos, the reason her figure looks smaller in the movie is because they made her lose weight for it. (And given everyone’s reaction to these pics, there was really no need… 😉

To those whou doubt that´s Carrie Fisher on all the pictures above. You may remember her from ROTJ so thin in that bikiny, and in this pictures she look a little bit fuller. That´s because before starting filming the Jabba scenes she had several weeks stomach problems and loose weight considerably…then she started to gain pounds and in few moths she was back at her normal size. And don´t forget she´s only 155 cm “tall” – it is very hard to stay slim when you are short and every one pound above is unforgiving…

Yeah right the ET weekly photo shoot had her out there and replaced her in the last photos. Look at her eyes you can see its her. I know her double was out on the beach too but why would they have photographed her alone…puh leeze!

Yes, “Legacy” is an unfortunate word to use. In these types of industries it’s ussually used as a euphemism for “old deprecated stuff that we’re contractually obligated to support, but really don’t want to”.

    Grape Street Crip:

I was 7 back in 1977, which was the perfect age to be when the original Star Wars rocked the world, IMO, and I’ve been a lifelong fan ever since. I’m also not ashamed to admit that I’ve been around the block a few times myself when it comes to all the ‘partying’ that I did in my teens and 20’s, though I wouldn’t go so far as to now try and glorify those past indulgences as ‘living life’. I’m older and wiser than that now.

The fact that Carrie is a wonderfully witty woman with lots of positive things to say about her SW experience is not in question. My concerns are not with Carrie Fisher as a person in the real world, but with how the fictional character of Princess Leia is now going to come across on screen, in the aftermath of Carrie’s extensively ‘recreational’ activities. (Love the way you use that word to rationalize away her severely self-destructive addictive behavior, BTW, as if she’d only done a little bit of light pot smoking while on holiday or something.)

Rather than ‘bashing Carrie Fisher’, it’s nothing more than a simple statement of fact to observe that her substance abuse has taken a noticeable toll on her appearance and voice. And as a SW fan, I honestly wonder how the story team may have had to work around that, much the same way Mark Hamill’s car accident in the real world necessitated his character’s face being mauled by the Wampa.

Sorry that you get so bummed out when fans like me wonder how the characters they grew up with will now be portrayed on screen.

Can people stop overreacting about how different Carrie is now from the 70’s? It literally does not matter in the slightest. To suggest that they need to addresses how much Carrie has changed in the actual film is ridiculous. She looks and sounds a bit different from 35+ years ago. Cool. Let’s move on. Maybe actually talk about her role in the film instead?

Agree- though she has changed a lot, and it ain’t all natural ageing(lips). I think with a bit of digital ‘flattery’ they will get her closer than you think in EP.7. Paul Simon was one lucky guy!

I really doubt that one can say how much is “natural aging” and what is due to intense lifestyle. People age differently. She looks very fine given the context of her age. Or in other words: I would go to bed with her if I was her age.

A big part of her voice changing is also due to a vocal chord injury from her stage performing days. It was fairly serious, and required surgery.

Leia, the pulse in the heart of the OT, from Han Solo rogue to Luke Skywalker becoming a Jedi.

The most powerful Skywalker, made unlikely victories ‘happen’ against the Empire that toppled the Emperor.

The Emperor knew, if Anakin were to have children, they would be a very great threat, & Palpatine achieved power that other Siths have only dreamed about.

All hail the multi-faceted OT character of Leia (youngest OT cast member)in Episodes 7-9, the cosmic powers of Empress Leia shall reign!!!

I would have to agree, if indeed our beloved character Han ends in a deathly demise, if Driver is indeed a Solo, its not to inconceivable to suggest his death comes about by the hand of his son and not Luke, as some have suggested on here. The battle would also loose the arm of Chewbacca lol Lucas has maintained that the Skywalker story has been told and that the story will shift through to Solo kids. Its quite exciting to chat about where a story can lead, our favourite characters, took out two death stars, the emperor and also Jabba, every bounty hunter in the galaxy could be on their tails lol I’m sure the Hutts were not overly thrilled when Jabba went down. Anyhow, I like a story that really gives you an emotional attachment, that really rips your heart out, very hard to pull off within a space opera although, I have this feeling that SW7 is going to be tragic, rip at our undies, I have a feeling that Abrams is actually going to pull it off, its emotional tragedy that could indeed, make this star wars movie the best of the best…of all
