UPDATE 2! Star Wars: Rebels Season 2 Ordered. Greg Wiseman Leaves the Series.

rebels

Star Wars Rebels gets the green light for season 2 a day before the series is set to premiere on television. Hit the jump for the full story…

From starwars.com :

“One day ahead of a highly-anticipated television premiere, Disney Channels Worldwide President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh announced plans to produce a second season of the animated series Star Wars Rebels from Lucasfilm.”

“Marsh said, “The global expectations for this series could not have been any higher. And I am proud to say that the team at Lucasfilm has delivered something that has surpassed even that incredibly high bar – artistically and thematically.”

“Star Wars Rebels has received acclaim from critics and fans alike since its advance debut screening at San Diego Comic-Con in July, followed by special previews this week on WATCH Disney XD and other digital platforms. Star Wars Rebels will be introduced via a television movie, Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, premiering Friday, October 3 (9:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel in the U.S. and Monday, October 6 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD in the U.S. It ushers in the series beginning Monday, October 13 (9:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD in the U.S. The series will air in 34 languages across 163 countries in over 400 million households”

Greg Weisman

UPDATE!

Also according to IGN Greg Weisman Leaves Star Wars Rebels:

Notably absent from Lucasfilm’s press release that list was Greg Weisman, who had previously been listed as an executive producer as well.

As it turns out, Rebel Force Radio had already broken the news earlier this week that Weisman, known for Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice, has indeed left the series. While he is an executive producer on Season 1, Season 2 will continue without him.

Also of note is the addition of Henry Gilroy in an ongoing role on Rebels. Gilroy was a big part of Star Wars: The Clone Wars early on, working alongside Filoni and many others who have since transitioned from that animated series to Rebels. Gilroy has written for Season 1 of Rebels — including a very strong episode that I’ve seen at a screening that will air early on — but it seems has a more prominent title as the show moves forward.

Can go on for quite a long while. depending how much story they can fit in the time frame between ROTS and ANH. The story can evolve and tie loose ends regarding most characters introduced in the Prequels and Clone Wars. Can also be used to plant new characters in the Sequel Trilogy. Sounds Great!!

I think that eventually, they’ll go beyond the timeframe of A New Hope. Dave Filoni did mention that it would be interesting to see how these guys would react to the destruction of Alderaan.

Go to someones house that has cable. Duh! Or wait till they go into distribution with Neflix. May take some time but Clone wars gave us Season 6 rather quickly and it was awesome! Disney needs you to watch this programming at all costs. How are they to gain/hook new fans and sell their related products? Would be a waste to not get into the minds and culture of the masses immediately. I wouldn’t buy a product of A star Wars character i didn’t know. Unfortunately not everyone will watch it when it is released. I probably won’t. Eventually i will. Would you rather not have anything at all and leave that whole story timeframe blank as it has been for so many years?

They have dozens of projects planned over the years to work on before they can get to Frozen 2 or whatever. I think that they even said that they want to make a sequel to Wreck-It Ralph, which would most likely take priority over the other movie in spite of how well both movies did.

Finally, does it really start now?
Are we finally oficially being allowed to critisize the show, or how many episodes must one wait before he can criticize the artstyle, themes, premise, circumstances, score, emotional depth, screenplay, chemistry, composition and general feedback one is able to grasp after seing just one picture, or clip…
Like disliking a book because of the writing even without reading the whole thing. If you don’t like it, then don’t watch it. I’m sure thats what Dave Filoni keeps thinking.
Simply not caring and stubbornly continuing to do while everybody starts hating you. Thats what Lucas did.
Luckily there are “true” fan boys that just like anything for their just cause and keep the fanatic in the fan.
Sometime its sad to clinge yourself to something not being able to dislike it or any part of it, because you fear everything will just disappear or become invalid.

    • October 3, 2014 at 3:23 am
      Permalink

Where’s the dislike button? Really, you have some nerve telling us to give Rebels a chance even though I’ve seen plenty of previews and clips which look god-awful, thank you very much. Apply some of your buddha-like knowledge and use your brain before you bash the prequel trilogy, hypocrite.

btw, a true artist would continue to do what he loves even if people hate him for it. That’s what lucas did. He had the bravery to tell a different star wars story with the prequels, even though they were deemed unworthy by tight-minded, stubborn losers like yourself. You are no artist and you are no visionary, otherwise you’d understand why Lucas did what he did.

Wait. So you haven’t actually watched Rebels? And you’ve just watched the previews? That’s like saying a movie is bad based on a trailer. I think there is a reason it has been getting good reviews, even from Star Wars fans.

        Unless you’re George Lucas himself…

In that case, thanks for the original trilogy (minus ewoks) and for parts of Episode III. Everything else is ass. Oh, and I understand the fear of someone taking your “baby” and making it possibly (but most likely) better than the prequels (aka ass…for the most part).

        P.S. Clone Wars is cool
        P.S.S. Seriously, it’s ass.

I just wish the PT scripts were better. Lucas clearly needed the right kind of help there.

I enjoyed the Phantom Menace!Yea, Some parts could have been cut out. Jar Jar was fine if they didn’t try to make him funny. He was very “Star Wars” to me. It was actually cool when he was not trying to be funny. It gave the film a uniquely somber quality it needed. I wanted to feel sorry him; alone and banished. Then later be astonished by his heroism and maturity at the Battle of Naboo. This didn’t happen to perhaps keep the kid audience invested. Although the anakin scenes i thought sufficed for that purpose. Jar Jar should not have wandered Tatooine he should have remained in the ship. Then I think Jar Jar would not have been the to blame for the films’ “mixed” reception.

You’re entitled to your opinion. I, personally, found the prequels to have sub par writing and acting with great special effects, music, and action.

That was my opinion. Also, I would really advise that you refrain from name calling and insults. This isn’t YouTube. The people here can debate without using these sorts of tactics.

I’d give Rebels a look see, although it seems that you’re determined to hate it. I found it to be a lot of fun and really good writing.

Take care, and remember, hate leads to the dark side.

I just hope as the series develops we get more pt and ot characters introduced. So many back stories to tell and link up. The new characters look OK but we will need some familiarity to.

    • October 4, 2014 at 9:55 pm
      Permalink

Perhaps they should have started with familiarity first, then proceed to the new character driven story. Its a risk because if you do the former, you run the risk of taking the”Classic” and driving into the ground, ruining our childhood. On the other hand it may be safer to start with a “new” familiarity of new characters. If worse comes to worst, you pulled the plug on production and the beloved “classicality” would remain unscathed regarding the Star Wars property. Either way fans need Star Wars in whatever form possible.

Well, Wiseman leaving and ordering season 2 makes points clear.
Disney knows there are no high expectations, but they will not say in the media. Then they fire Wiseman, cause Disney probably has seen this show has no personality (like Gargoyles? Spectacular Spiderman? Really? Those are jokes too) or…whatever.
And Wiseman has been the first choosen one.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about nor have you seen Gargoyles. Gargoyles was one of the most critically acclaimed animated tv series ever. It didn’t last longer than 3 seasons because it never was able to grab a large fan base having to compete with the likes of other great animated tv series of the time (Batman, X-men, Spider-man, Ninja Turtles…). Early-Mid 90’s was the golden age of superhero/comics animation.

Being most critically acclaimed animated series in USA doesn’t mean it’s a good show in the rest of the world.
I prefer Dungeons and dragons (1983) than that.

“Batman, X-men, Spider-man” all poor. In US you’re fanatics of comics and USA shows but in my opinión Japan school is far better (80’s and 90’s). You can’t even compare a charácter definition from a 80’s manga with US 90’s shows (Cmon man, Sherlock Holmes VS a Gargoyle for exemple, there’s no doubt)
And Star wars rebels seems has beautiful ships and landscapes but characters are really really really poor.

            Duke, thx for you opinion.
I supouse i had to say it’s my opinion. Yes, I find this shows poor animated. Yes, it’s my opinion, I don’t like this kind of animation (Batman, Spiderman, or something like that.)
You can not deny that you americans are comic fanatics and every show or film related to them you lose your minds. And it’s ok. If you like it good ahead. But repeat, my opinion is these shows are poor, nothing else. Probably they have good scripts and character developments but the animation is poor. Again, for me. I will not disrespect you if you like it.

Way back when the characters were first introduced, Sabine was the character i feared was a bit of a stretch, not because she’s a tough female (which i like)but because they deemed her worthy of the Mandalore armor. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a necessary character but did she have to be the representative of the Mandolore at this point in the Story production and revamping of the franchise? I understand the whole cutesy, tomboyish, pinky approach to interest the young modern female demographic, but I have always regarded the Mandalorian concept with warrior mystique and mystery as a reason for its appeal. Im curious to see how her association will unfold regarding these Mandalorian elements. She could easily have been just an independent mercenary or something totally new and different and still have wide appeal. That to me was a gutsy move because prior to Clone Wars only the Fetts were adorned with it (armor). Ive accepted the idea (its not completely central to the main Arcs of the story) but hope they do not tarnish the mystique and awesomeness of the Mandalorians. Well wait and see.

Like with the Wookies…they look like a whole new species now. Why not just introduce them as new characters? If this huge transformation draws new children and parents alike, selling the idea through record sales of products then it is worth it. BUT…… what made Chewbacca a great character was that he was pretty much a Monster that we grew to love. This balance was artistic in nature. He is a ferocious and scary “walking carpet” who is extremely loyal and loving. Again the Wookies are not too central in the big picture.

First of all, I’m laughing at the comments defending George Lucas by saying he’s a bold artist who did what he wanted. We are talking about contemporary mythology in the form of commercial films. I think these ten percent of prequel freaks honestly don’t understand the impact the OT had. Lucas was clever enough to know he needed to colloaborate to make the best films possible. The more power he got the less he cared about real, critical, collaboration.

It’s not that the prequels didn’t live up to my nostalgia, which is the most common “excuse” from you deluded prequel apologists. It’s just that there’s a huge difference between the original trilogy and the prequels because the original trilogy was shaped, thought about, designed, articulated and refined by myriad talented, passionate people. The prequels were made by an ungrateful spoiled man who resented his creation. He admits himself he’s not a good writer. He’s said that so many times. With that in mind, why did he write the prequels himself? We’ll I know one reason, because he didn’t care what the fans would think. We’ll sorry Georgie, but I liked when you cared about the various aspects that make up a good film and shaped the stories with other minds to get the best results. It’s not that I blame the guy or hate him. I just won’t delude myself and think that the prequels didn’t live up to my nostalgia, because it isn’t true. If Lucas would have brought in Lawrence Kasdan and maybe someone other than Rick McCallum (the ultimate yes-man), and actually cared about how the fans who built Lucasfilm would feel, just imagine how amazing the prequels could be.

I was very cynical about Star Wars: Rebels and really didn’t think I would like it. I figured that it would be nice to watch with my nephew, but expected it to be to childish. We’ll, after watching the first episode last night I am so surprised how much I enjoyed it. It really feels like Star Wars. So fucking much more than the prequels. It’s just written so well and makes such great use of the concepts of Star Wars. To see a character feel the force and not really know what it is, is totally the way to go story wise. Screenwriting is a craft and there are ways to make your audience feel engaged and feel suspense and all the wonderful things that make the visual medium so beloved by the masses. I am so fucking stoked for Episode VII. Now the only thing missing is the original unaltered films! I’d love to hear some prequel freaks respond to my points because nothing would be more validating, ya chumps!

I am glade Greg left, he is really good at story telling but not the right man for this job. Dave Filoni is the captain of the cartoon side of Star Wars and he should stay in that position without any conflict of creative differences.
