Domhnall Gleeson on Star Wars: Episode 7, His NDA and How He Got the Job.

Domhnall Gleeson

Comingsoon spoke with actor Domhnall Gleeson about his latest movie Frank and also asked him a few questions about the hotly anticipated Episode VII. In another interview with Huffington Post the young star shared what was the NDA he signed for Star Wars VII…

Excerpts from the interview, for the whole piece go to ComingSoon :

CS: Does everyone on set wear special shin guards now? Because of what happened to Harrison?

DG: (laughs) No comment. When you walk from your trailer to the set – you’re in Pinewood Studios – you have to put on a big, black cloak thing to cover all of your clothes, like full length, ’cause they’re worried about people seeing costumes and stuff. It’s crazy.

CS: So far it’s worked pretty well.

DG: There’s a guy in that window out there with a sniper rifle trained on you and another one that’s trained on me right now and they can hear every word we’re saying, and if you ask a question that disrespects the NDA there’s just going to be a *poof*.

Domhnall Gleeson

CS: I talked to your father a few weeks ago for “Calvary,” which you’re also great in. I asked him if he gave you any advice for the onslaught of fame you’re about to go through, and he said you were beyond advice at this point in your life.

DG: When my dad did “Harry Potter” we thought everything was gonna go nuts for him and it wasn’t “Harry Potter” that made everything nuts for him, it was “In Bruges” and then “The Guard” in terms of walking down the street and getting stopped a lot. Those are the movies that did it and they’re not the ones you’d expect. So just because I’m doing “Star Wars” doesn’t mean that’ll be the thing that makes people stop me in the street. Maybe they won’t EVER, so it’ll be fine.

CS: What is THE WORST bit of advice someone gave you after you got the role in “Star Wars”?

DG: The worst bit of advice? Oh I’m beyond advice, I thought we were through this. No I don’t know. Let me think… (pause) No, no one can give me advice on “Star Wars” because nobody knows what I’m doing in “Star Wars.” The only advice I’ve gotten is from people like J.J., and that’s always good advice!

In another interview with HuffingtonPost the star talked about the Episode VII NDA he had to sign and how he got the gig:

“I get sick in my mouth every time someone brings up ‘Star Wars.’ I’m so nervous I’m going to give something away. I just get a faraway look in my eyes and try to remain calm,” Gleeson told host Ricky Camilleri with a laugh. “You sign a massive, big, long contract thing … and then they send you a one-page thing that says, ‘Here is what you’re allowed to talk about.’ And then there’s just a big empty page. It says you’re allowed to say you’re excited to be in the movie. That’s it.”

You can watch the interview below (from 10 – 13 min.)

You know, I thought he was quite boring in Harry Potter, and wasn’t given much to do. Can you recommend something where you thought he acted well? i’d like to see it

He only had like 3 seconds of screentime in Harry Potter. Look up his imdb. He had a lead role in the comedy About Time which he was great in.

Whether he’s playing a cold-blooded IRA killer in the absorbing thriller Shadow Dancer or charming Rachel McAdams in the fantasy About Time, Gleeson is proving that he’s a major young talent and future A-Lister.

I just watched About Time! it’s not really my kind of movie, but I agree, domnhall (how does one even pronounce this?) was great! i thought he was adorable and the character was a great fit for him. he’s cute but pretty pale and scrawny though ahhaha not your average action movie star…

It’s actually pretty crazy how they’ve managed to keep all of the story from leaking. Not 1 bit of the plot has made it past being a small rumor at this point.

I wonder whether all these actors will speak in their own accents. Irish Domnhall, English Boyega, Daisy, Serkis, English-ish Lupita, Von Sydow, American Isaac, Driver, Christie… OT is basically American or British, and alien accents (like Ackbar) and alien languages. PT had more variety, like with Watto’s yiddish accent lol, or jar jar’s er special accent. I also wonder which actors will speak in alien languages! maybe andy, because he’s playing an alien!

I love that they’re being so secretive about Episode 7, because I simply don’t have the willpower to stay away from these rumor pages. I don’t mind hearing tidbits about Ford’s injury, or that Hamill’s contract forces him to have an Obiwan beard, but I am trying to stay from MAJOR plot points, major deaths, major character arc’s, etc.

I read every spoiler for Episode 3, as I essentially knew everything that would happen in that movie, and I regretted the first 5 minutes in the theater.

Regardless of what I eventually thought of Episode 3, being spoiled throughout the buildup was the wrong way to approach a new SW movie. Like I said, I don’t mind reading the little tidbit articles like this one, but when I see ‘major spoiler’ on this website, I do my best to stay away!!!

Yes I remember the Chancellor/Windu scene plot was leaked way early. What would have been a bad scene became even worse because I had higher hopes for that battle.

Vader should’ve fought Mace Windu in an epic lightsaber fight at the entrance to the Jedi Temple. Mace should’ve been their last line of defense.

Instead, Vader mostly kills children and Federation extras. Boo.

I got so caught up in Episode 3, as it was the first movie I really went spoiled in my life. I figured I knew the outcome of every character of the Prequels, so being spoiled wouldn’t ruin it that much? Boy was I wrong! I remember watching the movie and knowing what scene was next and how it played out, and I was so mad that I knew being spoiled was such a stupid thing to do!

With the Sequel Trilogy we don’t know who the characters are or who lives and dies, so staying unspoiled will really make the film much more interesting opening night. Its still tempting to read a ‘Major’ Spoiler, but I have pretty much stayed away from them if I see them beforehand.

I think the production is throwing out a ton of misdirection to, in part, deal with these kind of issues. We have heard all kinds of character and plot rumors and I’d venture to say that we still have very little idea of what will actually happen. So good on the production team for how they have handled things thus far.

I can’t see a black guy as lead either, it doesn’t feel right in a Star Wars Movie. Billy Dee Williams as support was great, he was smooth, cool and had style, never liked the “stoic calm” Windu character. I don’t like politic correct casting. Gleeson and Driver should lead and Daisy in a supporting way.

No I’am not this Tim Snow guy, is it strarnge that other people think the same? I’am not a racist, but a person with a dark skin tone does not fit for the main lead in the ST. It feels just wrong and not like OT or even the weak PT main flow wise. Maybe I will see it in another light someday, but for now I smell a sinking ship, if the SW makers go this way. Let’s be honest, if the OT Main Trio wouldn’t be so old, there would not be many new and young actors in it, they have to make a compromise. Lucas should have make the ST in the early till late ninties and not the stupid PT in 1999-2005! A missed opportunity, now is the main lead maybe to old for credible big action scenes.

    • August 9, 2014 at 6:20 am

The hell is wrong with you? How can you say a black lead will be weird in star wars? Hell, the sw galaxy is even more diverse than planet earth! You can handle a little green guy featuring in the movie but not a black guy? Anyway, the main character of the trilogy will likely be a skywalker kid, which means he or she will be white if it is leias kid, and plausibly black only if its Luke’s kid with a black mom. But dudes, get some help and open your minds, this ain’t the fifties!! It is seriously disturbing to me that you’re getting so many likes!

I’am open minded, by the way I’am not American, I have nothing to do with racist 50’s in the states! I just told hours ago that a black lead is weird, doesn’t fit the Star Wars style. Black/Hispanic/Asian people o.k. but in a supporting role. Not even Lucas casted a black guy in a big leading role in the PT – remember that is only some years ago! Compromise – let’s make a Alien charackter the lead. I got likes because many people think the same way, has nothing to do with racism.

Viral please feel free to delete race related posts. Especially when the only argument they have is… it feels wrong because he’s black.

It’s sickening. I can take OT and PT bashing all day long but I swear if I have to read one more uneducated idiot write the dumbest nonsense I’ve ever read about how the color of a characters skin matters… ugh.

Let’s not have the comments devolve that far. Please.

  • August 9, 2014 at 9:12 am

We’re talking about a character that doesn’t exist. There’s no prior knowledge of where or who he came from. Maybe Luke never had a child and the plot about him taking an apprentice turns out to be true? Then it wouldn’t matter what race he is.

So you’re switching out Malcom X argument doesn’t stand… Of course famous historical characters can’t be changed.

My problem is you have a problem with the color of his skin simply because it doesn’t “fit”… what the hell does that even mean?

Sure Han, Leia and Luke are white… so? I don’t see how it’s so inconceivable that they met… GASP… another race and they to have an important role!?

Not sure why I’m even debating with you when honestly I feel your object is just to troll to get a response. Your position is indefensible. Especially with your follow up comments of “Too black and ghetto”…

Either you’re incredibly blind to your own prejudices or you are quite aware and just trying to keep everything the way you like it… nice and white.

    Both are sad…

So because someone was born with dark skin tone, there is no way they can ever be the lead in a star wars film? Not because of something as silly as the inability to act, of course. But because of something as superficial and trivial as skin color. That’s what you’re saying, right?

“Mommy!! I want to be just like Luke Skywalker in a star wars movie!”, “I’m so sorry honey, but you’re black so you CAN’T be like Luke Skywalker, understand? Now get those ridiculous thoughts out of your head.” – Can you imagine someone telling that to their kid and having their dreams and imaginations shattered right then and there? Let alone the psychological damage that would cause to any impressionable kid. I imagine this is the type of world you would like to live in Mr. Snow.

You know, I really thought (hoped) that star wars fans were above this sort of thing, given the nature of the franchise and all. I come here to read in anticipation about one of my favorite means of escapism ever only to be jolted back into the repulsiveness of reality with comments like these.

I suppose bigotry is just one of those realities you can’t seem to escape. But one can dream.

Good written GI Jimbo, maybe both of you guys are right in some way. Tim Snow has some Points and you brought up some good ones too.
One Thing got me thinking, maybe I will change my mind. We don’t know yet, for which role he got casted right now, early bashing could be unfair at this time.
Let’s make a compromise, the main lead should be a Alien (a black female Person in a Costume), was never before in a Star Wars flick. This way – no gender or racism war –
