New Episode 7 and Spin-Off Rumors. Disney Abandoned Star Wars: 1313 Trademark.

star wars 1313

After THR and The Wrap scoops from this week it’s time for Latino Review to try their luck. So far LR has a pretty good record regarding scoops about the Marvel and DC Universe. Unfortunately most of their Star Wars scoops so far either have been debunked or sounded … well, like they were made up by someone who never saw Star Wars…

Nevertheless at this point nothing is certain so here are Latino Review‘s 4 most important stories so far updated with new bits of info:

mark hamill

We’ve heard that the big difference of opinion between JJ Abrams and screenwriter Michael Arndt was the story direction of Episode VII. We know Arndt (Toy Story 3) got booted from Episode VII scripting duties and was replaced by Lawrence Kasdan with some JJ for good measure. We’ve heard that Arndt was much more into the story of the Solo kids, while JJ felt – and still feels – that this the story of the Skywalker line.

Since Arndt walked almost all of his ideas have been tossed and Abrams/Kasdan are pursuing the Skywalker-centric version they wanted. Mark Hamill’s part has been beefed up so much he might end up shooting 6 months on the movie, our source estimated.

star wars

Jesse Plemons of Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad was heavily rumored to be under consideration for a lead role in Star Wars Episode VII. We heard that this is basically a locked deal, at least as locked as anyone can be at this point.

We expect Plemons’ involvement will be announced early on, but the Disney/Star Wars PR Plemons Plan, currently, is to confirm his involvement without naming his part. So we’ll get a confirmation, but not an official confirm that Plemons is playing Ben Skywalker, Luke’s son. Plemons’ character would be the main protagonist of Episode VIII. EIGHT!

star wars

To counter-act the prequels, the Boba Fett spin-off movie planned for 2018 has an interesting twist pitched by Episode VII writer Lawrence Kasdan: the spin-off will start with a complete stranger killing Boba Fett and taking his armor, starting a Man-With-No-Name bounty hunter tale. So: someone kills the Boba Fett from the prequels and takes his armor and name. One this is for certain is that Kasdan didn’t like the prequel and wants no Bobba Fett Clone in the spin-off film.

Lastly I was told by 3 sources, reps etc, etc…(so call who ever you want) that Captain American director Joe Johnston is on top of the list to direct the spin-off, which makes sort of sense since he began his career as a concept artist and effects technician on the first Star Wars film.

star wars

In response to a rumor that Obi-Wan would have some sort of offspring, we’re told that it’s absolutely not true. That being said, the Kenobi family will come into play. Could be niece nephew, no real details on that one. It could be a Force Ghost or a something else, we just know it’s not his daughter or grandkid.

Take this with a truck of salt, especially the Boba Fett rumor. And speaking of Boba Fett it looks like Disney has decided to fully abandon the trademark Star Wars 1313.

star wars

The United States Patent and Trademark Office currently classifies Star Wars 1313 as “Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued.”

This still doesn’t mean that the project is dead, only the name. I think there is still hope…

Not to be a negative nelly but I’m pretty sure that means 1313 is officially dead. That said… I love that Boba Fett idea simply because I agree about the prequels ruining him. Original voice for the win!

As for Plemons I’m not really happy with the idea of him being such a major role… but a part of me is willing to give him a chance too. If any of this proves true that is!

That Boba Fett idea has been around a while. I first heard it from Jason Swank on Rebelforce Radio several weeks ago.

However, it’s likely that 1313 was ‘cancelled’ due to the fact that the first spin off movie will be Fett-centric. As such, could we see a slightly modified version of the game in 2016 (as the game version of the movie)? It’s possible.

C´mon, the EU shit is NOT a part of the movies, and will never be, Seems like every other on these SW forums keep writing about Ben Skywalker, the Solo kids, admiral Trawn and so on, and GL stated a long time ago that the story he had written was nothing like the stuff that had been published, Luke won´t get married, the emperor won´t be cloned and so on…. So just drop the EU talk already, the story will be all new, and all that EU shit is outta the picture and doesn´t count.

Thank you ! If I hear anyone else sprout rubbish about how the films need to respect the EU or whatever then I’m going to rip my eyes out.

I agree with you about the EU stuff. However, it is possible that Luke does have offspring and it does make sense that he would name his child after his Jedi mentor Ben. So, if there is a Skywalker child and he is named Ben, don’t freak out! You can start freaking out if his wife is named Mara Jade.

But the original characters WILL have children 30 years later so there will be “Solo kids”, possibly with the same names, doesn’tmean iit’s going to follow the EU story though..

At one point, George Lucas said on Late Night television that the books were Episodes 7 8 and 9. The truth is he is fickle on the subject. Seeing as how Coruscant, Aayla Secura, Quinlan Vos, Republic Commandos, and other things have been made movie-level canon by Lucas.

I agree that the material will not reflect the EU stories entirely, but there will be borrowed concepts for sure. Han and Leia will certainly have children, however, I don’t know if the same will go for Luke. I believe we’ll see him as the Grand Master of the new, much smaller Jedi academy, where the Solo children are being trained. I really hope they don’t include the Yuuzhan Vong or clone the emperor or anything like that. I’d be pretty disappointed.

Don’t forget that, following the Disney take-over, when Kennedy became CEO of Lucasfilm all bets were off regarding the details of the sequel trilogy.

Whatever George Lucas once said or wished for is now a moot point. Even more so now that Abrams and Kasdan have replaced Arndt on scriptwriting duties.

Aside from Lucas’s rough outline for the story (which I believe Kennedy will want to stay true to), all other details are up in the air (including characters).

Abrams will build the bridge between the producer/director standpoint and the perspective of the die-hard fans in writing the E-VII screenplay. That being said, whether the first of the sequel trilogy is or is not what everyone’s expecting, we’re going to like it; much more than the prequels, that’s for sure. I believe that these two will do great things with the film.

Agreed. Under George Lucas’s control, Star Wars was always what HE wanted. With Abrams/Kennedy in control, I believe they will give the fans what THEY want. Or they will at least try to.

Oh yes, they’ll give the fans as much as they can while at the same time including material to attract an audience outside of the fanbase. Their goal is to make Star Wars really cool again and perhaps even focus on the adult demographic for the next film while the younger fans have the Cartoon series and such. After this next episode is released, I think fans will finally be emerging from the dark tunnel of bad Star Wars we’ve been in since the special editions and walking into a whole new light that we really feel comfortable in.

“I’m a Star Wars fan and I want to see the next generation of Solos and Skywalkers take front and center. Apparently we’re not getting that.

So, you’d rather be thrown into a brand new story with little to no explaination of what’s happened in the 30 years since ROTJ ended? That’s ridiculous. It doesn’t matter what you as a fan want, it’s about what the masses of audiences will want to see in theaters when Star Wars returns with a new episode to the big screen. It’s going to be one of the biggest events in the history of cinema. People want to see where their favorite characters are 30 years since we last saw them and what new heroes and threats will be introduced. What Abrams is doing is giving us the best of the old and the new here to satisfy everyone. Episode VII is going to serve as a transition between what we know and what will become of what we know. Episodes VIII and IX will ocus entirely on the new characters, I’m almost certain of that. Abrams is just giving us closure. Sure it’s what he wants, but it’s also what the majority of Star Wars fans want, even if that rules-out people like you. This is the best way for them to re-introduce Star Wars into the world as something new without fucking it up like Lucas did in the PT.
Think about going to a party where you don’t know anyone at all with a friend you’ve known your whole life who’s there to help introduce your new surroundings. It’d just be more comfortable for the audience that way.

This isn’t directed at anyone in particular but there seem to be a lot of all or nothing comments related to preserving EU content. I’m familiar with a pretty good deal of it and there is plenty to love and plenty to hate in the EU. I guess my point is that I’d hope that they keep a lot of the good stuff and I have my fingers crossed that the group re-developing the canon is trying to account for that. The home run would be to leave the best parts of the EU intact and develop new and quailty content for the movies.

Yeah I have to agree. It would be so disappointing if they simply adapted some EU novel, or went with the tiresome and unbelievable “remnants of the Empire” dreck.

I’ve not heard that Fett “rumour” before. It’s hilariously irreverent in terms of Lucas’s vision, but it sure does respect what made the character work in the first place. Probably wishful thinking, though.

That Latino Review page is so ridiculous and out of touch with what Star Wars is. The Clone Wars show A) established that every clone has their own identity and B) continued to build up the character of Boba Fett under Lucas’ instruction. The only things of note they have are either rumors that were reported by others first, or the blindingly obvious fact that Obi-Wan was an orthodox Jedi (in contrast to Qui-Gon, who bent the rules and relied on intuition).

I think the best way to film a Fett spin-off would be to give it almost a western theme. Not so much as Firefly with the dumb country soundtrack and shit, but just leaning heavily towards the gritty, frontier side of Star Wars. That’d capture the Fett tone very nicely.

  • January 17, 2014 at 4:30 pm

Joe Johnston had a hand in creating Boba Fett, and actually suggested to George a couple years ago that a spinoff be made.

I don’t know if he would’ve wanted to direct it, but it makes so much sense, I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually didn’t now.

Boba Fett not the same guy in Episode II?

Now you OT fanatics can’t deny that Disney is dissing prequel/clone wars fans for the sake of keeping you guys happy.

    • January 17, 2014 at 4:45 pm
      Permalink

Disney hasn’t been “dissing” the prequel fans in anything they’ve done. Those fans have had so many things made for them since the OT was first released in its’ entirety, but fans of the OT have been waiting since the 80’s to know what happens after ROTJ. Tht’s why fans like Zahn decided to go ahead and come up with a conclusion on their own.
Either way, Disney aren’t the ones making the decision to go that route with the Fett spin-off (if the rumor is even true), it’s Kasdan: a man we’ve all come to trust for his involvement in writing the best Star Wars episodes in the saga, hands down.
Quit complaining and learn to live without prequel characters for a little while. Their story has passed on. It’s time for us to focus on characters like Luke, Leia, Han and their kids and find out where their adventures lead. That’s what makes this a SEQUEL. Abrams and Kasdan are making a very good decision by focusing on the OT characters for episode VII and passing it on to the new heroes for episodes VII and IX.

I don’t get this either/or mindset that thinks that Episode VII will either be ALL about Luke, Han and Leia or else ALL about their kids.

It’s clearly going to be both, and I don’t see any problem with that. Especially since it will give us an opportunity to see first-hand the relationships between the original cast and their children, rather than eliminating the original cast and then having to waste screen time on exposition scenes about those relationships.

The Boba Fett that I know and love is actually someone else? I don’t know why, but I love that idea! It makes him even MORE mysterious! In the books and EU, we learn so much about Boba that it takes the mystery out of him! But finding out that he’s not who we thought he was, brings that mystery back! I’m all for it! Can’t wait to see if this is true or not.

That was one problem I always had with the EU stories – they had a very strong tendency to over-explain things.

It’s understandable, of course. They kept writing novel after novel after novel, drawing from the same fairly limited well of original source material from the movies. It’s kind of like the problem that 24-hour news networks face – they have so much time to fill that they end up flogging minutiae as though they were massively important.

I think that this, coupled with the fact that Boba Fett is an old fan favorite, led the EU authors to squeeze every last bit of story out of him that they could, leaving little or none of the mystery that made Fett such a compelling side character in the first place.

And then Lucas threw the EU’s Fett origin material out the window when he wrote the “Baby Boba” storyline for Episode II. So now there was a whole ‘nother level of explaining away the mystery behind him.

Personally, I doubt there’s anything to this latest rumor. I assume that whatever Boba Fett movie comes out will involve Jango’s clone, and will probably wipe out whatever shreds of mystery may remain about the character. But I do kinda like the idea behind the rumor.

Thought you all might find this of interest, I found this on the Star Wars 7 Wiki.. May the force be with you all…. always!

Author Timothy Zahn, whose Star Wars novel series, the Thrawn trilogy, is set in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, was also interviewed in 2012.[20] Zahn confirmed the sequel trilogy would not be based on the Thrawn novels, but said he had been briefed years before on Lucas’ plans for the sequels (Zahn had discussions with Lucas before the first Thrawn novel was published in 1991). Zahn said, “The original idea as I understood it—and Lucas changes his mind off and on, so it may not be what he’s thinking right now—but it was going to be three generations. You’d have the original trilogy, then go back to Luke’s father and find out what happened to him, and if there was another 7th, 8th or 9th film, it would be Luke’s children.”

More info on Episode 7 from past interviews listed as well on Star Wars 7 Wiki..

The main theme of the trilogy would be moral and philosophical problems, such as the necessity for moral choices and the wisdom needed to distinguish right from wrong, justice, confrontation, and passing on what you have learned (Lucas in 1983 and 1989).[18]
The key actors, Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Ford as Han Solo, and Fisher as Princess Leia, would appear, in their 60s or 70s (Lucas in 1983).[18]

Interviewed in 2012 after the announcement of the new trilogy, Lucas biographer Dale Pollock said that he had, in the 1980s, read the outlines to 12 Star Wars episodes planned by Lucas, but had been required to sign a confidentiality agreement.[19] Pollock said:
“The three most exciting stories were 7, 8 and 9. They had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, ‘I want to see these 3 movies.'”

I for one am all for abandoning EU plot arcs but keeping perhaps a few worlds and cultures. I also agree about half way up these comments with the likelihood of these sequels being better than the prequels… almost by default.

As long as the plot is decent and not a contrived jumbled mess… it’ll be awesome. Now toss in good to decent acting with a with location filming and physical props/sets you’re well on your way to a new classic!

Anytime I read rumors about conflicts between scriptwriters or one of them getting fired or something along those lines, I’m hugely skeptical.

Script rewriting is a standard everyday practice in the industry. Multiple screenwriters have been brought in to rewrite every screenplay in existence multiple times. It’s an integral part of the creative process.

The only people who think there is anything more to it, are people who know nothing about how the industry actually works.
