The Star Wars Show: John Knoll Reveals What George Lucas Said About Rogue One + Andi Interviews the Cast
This episode of the Star Wars Show was particularly interesting. Andi Gutierrez sat down with the cast and director of Rogue One for a very entertaining interviews. Also during a small party at LFL, celebrating the release of a second Star Wars movie, John Knoll revealed what were George Lucas’ thoughts after he saw Rogue One.
Here’s what John Knoll said (at 3:13 min.):
I got off the phone about a half hour with George Lucas. The story was really emotional and it all looked great. And just couldn’t stop talking about how happy he was.
Now that we have the Maker’s approval we can continue to this week’s episode…

Wow, normally they release the RunDisney medals about two months prior to the event. Nice exclusive on the show. Can’t wait to run the 10k and half marathon.
With Rogue One and TFA last year, the cast seems to be having a good time at all of the press events and interviews.
George Lucas’s thoughts on Rogue One are at the 3:00 mark of the video above. It sounds like he really, genuinely liked it!
Or unless he is like James Cameron on Terminator Genisys and said he liked it, because it is a pile of garbage.
but I doubt that
I doubt it too – we know he spoke his mind after TFA. He didn’t say TFA was terrible, but he did indicate that he thought it lacked originality, and was made for the fans.
Like you, I seriously doubt that Rogue One will be a pile of garbage 🙂
I can’t listen to Cameron anymore because of that, lol.
Wow, I guess the white slavers have grown on him.
I know you’re probably joking, but he didn’t actually say Disney were “white slavers”, he said that he felt like someone who had sold their child to the white slavers… he was expressing that it was hard to give Star Wars up. He just chose some really unfortunate words there, which they probably should have edited out.
Unfortunately there’s always someone trying to take someone out of context and go completely to an alt extreme for the purpose of getting a response from someone. I don’t think he was joking.
So ‘now’ it matters what Lucas has to say? Wonder how the prequel haters feel….
what does one have to do with the other?
Well all the people that have been bashing George since TFA was released saying that he royally fckd-up SW with the prequels, and that SW needed reviving, certainly do not agree with his point of view, and if he liked this, well, you do the math….
what people? you are literally bringing this point up out of no where.
He does it often.
What people? Really? you’ve never read any of the shit the man got after TFA was released? Nothing about how JJ resurrected the franchise that Lucas killed, etc?
You have a right to your opinion, those of us who don’t like the prequels have a right to ours.
And he alienated a good portion of the fan base with his work on the sequels. TFA and the new initiative by Disney has brought most of us back together.
and? i doubt any of those people have changed their mind just because lucas likes rogue one. i”m guessing you’re trying to pick a prequel fight, but its just more confounding then anything.
Nope, no fight, just creating awareness to Internet-hipocrisy, but let’s just leave it at that, and since I’ve always agreed with Lucas (even for the Prequels) I guess I too will enjoy this movie
Lucas didn’t kill it. The prequels actually made money and the merchandise made a killing. Not to mention the Clone Wars tv show and god knows what else he had planned before the Disney buy-out…
If he had so much planned why was he faced with either massive layoffs or selling? Because star wars as a brand was dying. Disney saved it.
got to stop you there…it was far from dying. The prequels still made a ton of money. The EU was making a ton, and kept books in the top 10 with every release. There were several great games in the works and he was already in early discussions with the original cast.
Anything made, reuniting the original cast would have made a killing, no matter the story, who directed or anything else.
Lucas wanted out because of his age and the time required to be fully involved. and decided to put his baby in what he thought was the best possible hands.
They all made money. But they alienated a substantial portion of the fan base; they diluted it. Now it’s full strength again. Disney did that. I know it’s hard for you to believe, but it happened.
not sure they alienated a substantial portion. I believe most accepted the story that it give us and chocked up the rest to stiff acting and the ‘Jar-Jar” as a mistake. I think by the time 3 come out that George was back to his old form.
minority I know, but I think 7 has been more of an issue among fans then the other films…from a story perspective.
I’d have to respectfully disagree, but it was still fun to talk about.
I know, it has never been ‘dead’ to me or needed transfusions of any kind
Clone Wars didn’t make money though, Lucas was propping up that show with his own cash.
really? I’d never heard that one???
The fact that Lucas made positive comments about R1 don’t make his prequel movies any better. Praising another director’s work doesn’t make your own movies good.
Crixxxx i logged in specially when i read this comment! there was nothing wrong with the prequels apart from clone wars & i quite enjoyed battlefield earth! you prob like the movie “the farce awakens” now that movie really was a stinking pile of trash! FACT.
Two billion dollars and praise from fans and critics says otherwise.
Your opinion on good film kind of goes into that stinking pile of trash you referenced when you state you quite enjoyed battlefield earth.
A movie can make a ton of cash and still be bad. For example: Transformers Dark of the Moon.
Oh Ghost. Just need to start a fight about the prequels no one asked for, don’t you?
“i quite enjoyed battlefield earth”
Watch you some Nostalgia Critic.
Well, thanks, George, for making the effort to log in and present your opinion as fact, despite the two things being the opposite of one another. Here’s my opinion: The prequels were embarrassing and insulting messes that were badly made in nearly every way. They have been torn apart six ways to Sunday. Battlefield Earth is notorious for being one of the worst films ever made and a commercial bomb, whereas, The Force Awakens was the most successful film in American history and a critically and popularly acclaimed smash hit. So it looks as though your ability to determine the quality of films is basically crap. FACT.
to each their own…I loved the prequels, hated 7 and couldn’t make it through battlefield earth.
” Praising another director’s work doesn’t make your own movies good.” Same goes other way around, right? So Lucas praising R1 doesn’t mean it is good…
Fans have issues with Lucas directing the prequels, and some of the ideas, but I think thats as far as the “hate” goes. Lucas is still a genius and a big deal when it comes to Star Wars
For the record, Gerry, no one at Lucasfilm has ever stated his opinion doesn’t matter.
People on this forum are not Lucasfilm. They’re internet nerds.
So I’m sure those who were worked for and with George Lucas are very pleased that he has given his blessing for the movie and that he really enjoyed it.
As you know, I’m a prequel hater.
And I’m happy too; it’s still his baby, even if he gave it to a new caretaker. He should get to feel good about what new creative minds are doing with his brain child.
He didn’t royally mess up Star Wars with the prequels, he just made bad films.
Noone at Lucasfilm stated his opinion did not matter?
Does this include the Lucasfilm/Disney people who listened to Lucas’ versions of VII, VIII, and IX and then threw his drafts in the trash before going with JJ Abrams and Kasdan’s version of the story?
You mean his half assed treatments that he threw together at the last minute? The ones he refused to let Disney see before the sale and they had zero input on? Yeah that’s weird that they would do that…
but wouldn’t you like to know what those treatments were?
I knew you’d show up and cry about it.
I’d like to know the results…
I’ll post them up. Totally unbiased. I’m interested to see what she says honestly.
Yeah I know a few friends that recently watched the prequels because they wanted to get into SW when TFA came out, and they all say the same: “I get it, but what was with those newer looking ones, those scared me and were tough to get through.”
Yeah, I get the impression that they are thankful for what he started but it shows, that they hated his prequel vision and wanted to distance themselves from any of his creative input. A mistake imo…he could have helped tie 7 in much better, even if it was just minor input.
It’s a good thing, really. Lucas is one hell of a story teller, and great at coming up with stories in general. But let’s face it, he is no writer. The farther away he is from a screenplay, the better.
But Lucas had his chance, and he sold it off. In no way whatsoever is anyone beholden to him or his drafts moving forward.
you know I’m on the opposite side and love the prequels…I think Lucas should have been on as a consultant for 7-9. He should have inked that at a minimum. It’s great to know that he did enjoy this one, and it looks very promising.
He was, he quit because they wouldn’t use his drafts. It was kind of a spoiled brat thing to do, but I get why he did it.
I didn’t know that.
We banged it around here on the forums for a while.
He thought he was going to have some serious control still creatively. He was pretty upset when he didn’t. Remember the whole white slavers bit? LOL Oh, good times. He’s settled down some since.
I don’t really care about anything he says now… but it’s nice to hear that everyone seems in agreement on the film. I’m glad he liked it. I mean I’d rather he enjoy what has become of his franchise than to hate it. It almost makes me feel he’s honest and not some bitter guy. Which is always nice!
man, two movies in four years, incredible accomplishment. also, got to give them major kudos for picking another awesome cast. 🙂
I wonder of Jyn’s father is supposed to be the equivalent to Oppenheimer?
Now I have become death, the destroyer of worlds
That’s it exactly.
*am become*
GL likes it, Knoll likes it, Edwards seems to like it and Disney seems happy.
I know TFA did a lot of good work on healing some of the rifts out there but maybe R1 will bring us all together! Well… I’m sure there will always be a few who hate it.
China has a new trailer. UNBELIEVABLE. This gonna be epic!! Almost there!!
That’s TREMENDOUS! We need to make better deals with China, totally ripping us off! UNBELIEVABLE, SAD!
I’m really glad to see how everyone is having so much fun with this. I have to say, when I first saw the Star Wars show I thought it was pretty lame, but it’s grown on me, they’re just having fun talking about Star Wars. As for the Party with Lucas’ praise, I’m happy that he can still be a fan and talk with them. Would have been great to see him on camera though at that party
I’d rather hear it straight from Lucas.
That would be epic. I miss him..
I think #RogueOne will make more money at the Box Office then The Force Awakens or come really close. John Knoll is awesome for coming up with the idea. After all he is the Co-Creator of Photoshop pretty smart guy.
I think that’s unlikely. I think it’s going to be big, but it’s not the first SW in a decade, it’s not the first well reviewed SW in 16 years, and it’s not the official continuation of the story we were told was over. I can’t see it doing TFA numbers.
I agree they need to get Lucas on camera saying just how much he loved the early screening. He is the spark that ignited the Star Wars Revolution
Cool. Yes I finally get to see it tonite!!
