Louis Leterrier Reveals He’d Pitched Two ‘Star Wars’ Ideas to Lucasfilm

Now You See Me and Fast X filmmaker Louis Leterrier was recently a guest on Josh Horowitz’s latest podcast “Watch-a-long”, where the two of them did a live commentary on The Incredible Hulk, which Leterrier directed. Horowitz raised the topic of Star Wars to the director, asking if he’d ever be interested in working for Lucasfilm, and got a surprising answer.

Apparently, Leterrier had pitched a TV series to Lucasfilm years ago about a “lone wolf and a cub”. He then added that he had two pitches, one pre-A New Hope focused on Luke and Obi-Wan, and another focused on Boba Fett. In his own words:

“I had my dream Star Wars idea a long time ago, when I came to them and pitched it: ‘We should do a Star Wars TV show conceived as a lone wolf and cub’. And they said ‘Uh, we don’t know if that’s a great idea’.

It was two things. I wanted to do the missing part between… Basically before A New Hope when Obi-Wan takes Luke. I wanted to do that. But I was also very interested in the Boba Fett movie.”

He then said he had no problem with the fact that Lucasfilm ended up developing those concepts with other people despite the fact that they’d passed on his take first. But of course, there are a lot of details missing here. We assume that this happened around 2017, when Lucasfilm was taking pitches for Disney Plus series — but at that time, the Obi-Wan concept was being worked on as a film, and Boba Fett was also going to be a movie with James Mangold.

Leterrier was of course light on specifics. For instance, what was the “lone wolf and cub” idea? Was that Obi-Wan and Luke? It definitely sounds like it, but again, that had a life of its own with other creatives. Should they maybe have gone back to him once they decided to turn it into a Disney Plus series? Perhaps, but Deborah Chow also seemed like such a logical choice to direct at the time.

But despite all of that, it’s always interesting to hear about different creatives pitching ideas to Lucasfilm, and seeing what almost stuck and what landed elsewhere. Most recently, for instance, we got confirmation that Guillermo del Toro was quite far along in his Jabba the Hutt film which David S. Goyer was scripting. Goyer had also begun development on a Dawn of the Jedi film even before James Mangold.
