Katee Sackhoff Talks Bo-Katan’s Feelings About the Darksaber in ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3

Deadline caught up with Katee Sackhoff to discuss what she thinks are Bo-Katan’s true intentions for the Darksaber in The Mandalorian season 3.

Spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian Chapter 18…

Bo-Katan has a connection to the Darksaber, having wielded it before when she ruled Mandalore. So how does Bo-Katan feel about the Darksaber now that it’s in the hands of Din Djarin? Chapter 18, The Mines of Mandalore, follows Bo-Katan and Grogu on a rescue mission to save Din Djarin from an expertly laid trap by a formidable spider cyborg.

This allows Bo-Katan to save Din Djarin and wield the Darksaber once more. To say Bo-Katan is a natural with the Darksaber is an understatement. Not only does she send the cyborg back to the depths of the Mandalorian mines in pieces, but she also ends up saving Din a second time when he sinks to the bottom of the Living Waters of the mines. After effortlessly proving herself as an exceptionally skilled warrior (and a natural with the Darksaber), Bo-Katan returns the Darksaber to Din Djarin.

Deadline asked Katee Sackhoff a range of questions about her character’s relationship with the Darksaber, including why Bo-Katan seems reluctant to take the sword from Din Djarin. Sackhoff had this to say:

We have to go back to see why she’s doing what she’s doing. This is a person who has fought, fought against her own people. She’s fought forever and she realizes that doesn’t work. You can’t continue to fight amongst yourselves. I think with Din — I don’t know if I’ll go as far as to say that she respects and trusts him — but she doesn’t not. He’s done nothing. If didn’t have the Darksaber, he’s done nothing that would make him her enemy. I think that is her problem is that she realizes that she’s not going to fight her people anymore. She’s not going to fight someone who she doesn’t have a reason to fight. Every single possibility, every place that she’s at right now, every direction she’s done before didn’t work before. That’s what she’s trying to figure out.

She also talked about the Night Owls and why they left Bo-Katan:

She says that they abandoned as soon as she returned without the Darksaber. I think these are people who thought Bo would do anything to lead, that Bo would fight anyone to lead, and that’s what she wanted and that’s why they were following her. And when they saw something in her that they didn’t respect, they left. She lost her people, her home, she lost her family, she lost everything.

When asked about what Bo-Katan thinks about Din Djarin and the Darksaber:

He’s trying to get rid of it at the beginning of the season; he’s trying to give it away for sure.

We hope to see more of Bo-Katan and the Darksaber as season 3 of The Mandalorian continues next week on Disney Plus. Meanwhile, you can read Zak’s review of Chapter 18 here.
