SWNN’s Wayward Jedi continues to explore the classic films that director Rian Johnson says served to influence the next chapter in the Star Wars saga. This time we take a look at Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief.

To Catch a Thief is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s notable classics and another on Rian’s list of inspirations. In this video, Wayward Jedi talks about the film and how it might have inspired some of the look and feel of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.

And there i was, thinking the alien designs in Star Wars couldn’t get any more ugly. The guy on the right looks like a walking nipple and the one at the back kinda resembles a tumor, it would be nice to see more of humanoid/near-human species such as Togruta, Pantoran and Zabrak. I feel like they are running out of ideas for alien species.

It seems like the aristocratic casino crowd are purposely designed to look silly and ostentatious — it’ll probably make sense within the context of the film.

Yeah your’e probably correct, it just looks a bit daft in that image in my opinion, i love some of the human’s outfits though, Canto Bight seems very interesting.

It’s a recurring theme in classic Hollywood films: not only “To Catch a Thief”, but also “My Fair Lady” comes to mind…

I find ok they (directors) want to have their own alien species, (but this is one of my complains about the new movies, I have said this before, many times but…) where are all other species?, I find dificult to agree with having a place, a casino-like place, where people came from a lot of places and reunite and yet I dont see any togruta, or rodian, or twilek, toydarian, gran, or any other known species. this specific scene looks more like a starwars-like movie, not too much actual Star Wars to me, I really hope to see some familiar species in the movie.

I think a lot of that hinges on where the action is taking place. If this Canto Bight place is closer to the Core, then I would find it odd that some of the more prevalent races are not seen. If it’s located in one of the farther-flung reaches of the galaxy, then it’s more understandable, considering how big galaxies are.

Exactly, i just don’t understand why they have to keep designing loads of new ones, when there is already a huge amount to choose from; many of which haven’t even appeared in the movies and many that haven’t appeared regularly, such as: Kel Dor, Nautolan, Pantoran, Togruta, Zabrak and Trandoshan.

It probably isn’t going to ruin the film for me at all, but i hope it doesn’t become a trend with every new director and just hope that they start include familiar species a bit more often. Maybe this seems nitpicky but i thought it was worth mentioning.

Canto Bight needs it’s Twi’lek strippers. That’s all it’s missing!

To be fair, any movie needs Twi’lek strippers.

If they included familiar aliens, the movie would be a REHASH!!

        REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

          why you took so long?!

          Let me explain it:
          FAMILIAR ALIEN = NOT REHASH
NEW ALIEN THAT LOOK ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE A FAMILIAR ALIEN = REHASH

Anything from a previous movie is a rehash. All familiar details are a rehash.

            Everything is rehash.

            You’re a rehash.

            I’m a rehash.

            We are all a rehash.

That would be funnny, everybody complaining about the teaser “oh! Rebels are infiltrating again in a First Order/Empire Base…” referring to Rose and Finn.
But what if they are Canto Bight party costumes?

A very real possibility. Attending the party of the wealthy Canto Bight elite as a couple of disguised FO officers would be a fun little scenario.

They could be even Empire costumes, they look pretty similar.
Even theirs are grey, the equivalent of Hux is black.

Haha, I love this idea! That would be a very Hitchcockian gesture: a character who ‘hides’ by wearing a costume of…himself…

Even the images we have from the teaser are more like Empire costumes than First Order, so it could be a real option.

      That would be genius.

Not gonna happen but it would be hilarious. Would love to see Boyega run with that type of scene.

I didn’t know RJ had mentioned this film. Hitchcock is one of my favorites: I’ll have to re-watch it (haven’t seen it in many years). A Hitchcock influence–and especially this film–would be a fun new element in SW. Something to remember for those who keep howling (without much evidence) that TLJ is going to be a rip-off of ESB…

Robbie the Cat is one smooth cat. I hope Finn tries to be that way and just comes off as goofy lol. “I’m with the Resistance!” hahaha.
