A Sneak Peak At Marvel’s Captain Phasma

marvelphasmacover

This afternoon we Star Wars comic fans were treated to a glimpse of the Journey To The Last Jedi comic dedicated to Captain Phasma. Thanks to Anthony Breznican at EW, we not only got a good look at the cover, a few of the actual pages were put on display. If you’re like me, one of the biggest complaints about The Force Awakens was that we barely saw Phasma. With this comic series, as well the Phasma novel by Delilah S. Dawson, Phasma fans should be pretty excited.

We last saw Captain Phasma being taunted by Finn, letting her know he got the best of her. Though we never saw it, we all assumed she was pushed into a trash compactor on Starkiller Base. Her fate was quite uncertain until it was confirmed Gwendoline Christie would return to dawn the chrome armor once again. In this series, we will not only see Phasma’s escape from Starkiller base, we will almost certainly see her rejoin the First Order, setting the stage for the events in The Last Jedi.

Marvel has really assigned a great team to this book. Kelly Thompson takes the helm as writer. She did excellent work on Marvel’s Star Wars Annual #2. We can rest assured that she will give us a great story about whatever Captain Phasma is up to immediately after The Force Awakens. In addition to the great writing, Marco Checchetto takes the art up again. He was responsible for a portion of Shattered Empire, and also did some great work in the limited series Obi-Wan and Anakin. There’s no doubt that fans will have high expectations for this Journey to The Last Jedi limited series, but I’m confident they will be exceeded.

Have a look below at the opening pages of the first issue. Thanks again to Anthony Breznican at Entertainment Weekly for sharing these. This series is going to be great!

Maybe I will finally care for that character after reading the comics 🙂

I can’t understand why they did nothing with her in TFA. They had built her up so much in marketing surely that means they must have filmed substantial stuff for her. They should (a) had her be the storm trooper Finn duelled with (using her spear against the lightsaber). Or (b) do what they in this comic, show how she escaped the base.

They said from the get go she was the Boba Fett of this movie. Translation: She has a few lines and looks awesome.

Sadly, she’ can’t shine Boba’s boots on her best day. Not intimidating in the least — shiny armor is cool — but complete vacant inside.

Are you just going to paste that line as a response to everyone in this thread? I guess you’re proud of your turn of phrase, but you’re still just an edgelord. Move along.

Can’t help it, I like to degrade weak characters. And Phasma was the weakest Villain of TFA. Monumental disappointment.

I like to degrade weak comments. And Kent Kaliber has nothing of substance to add to this conversation. Monumental disappointment.

See? I can do it too.

This is most likely because the “they” in marketing and the “they” that were making the movie are two different entities. Star Wars movies are usually kept under pretty tight wraps and I doubt many of the folks in charge of promoting the film had a solid idea of what the story looked like. Phasma looks cool and the character is played by a recognized actress, so naturally they went with it.

It’s also possible that Phasma had a bigger role before one of the many rewrites and edits that movie scripts go through. Merchandise and marketing materials have to begin production long before a film is actually finished, so often what we see in merchandise doesn’t exactly gel with what we see on screen.

It’s not a matter of someone botching something up. It’s just a consequence of how movies and merchandise are produced.

I was going to say something similar. They do marketing based on what looks cool with no real idea of what happens with a character, ship, set or setting, etc.

It’s a similar situation to what happened with the Force Awakens Monopoly game that came out a few months before the film. It included four figures; Rey wasn’t one of them. People went nuts because they interpreted this as a slight against female characters. It was nothing of the sort. The game had to be designed nearly a year before the movie’s release in order to see store shelves in a timely manner. The production materials released to the developers greatly favored Finn. So, the game designers assumed Finn was the focus of the movie.

People (especially those on the Internets) absolutely thrive on making something out of nothing. The real reason tends to be a lot less exciting and article-worthy.

Anybody else noticed the size of her blaster in the cover?
    That’s no blaster rifle… it’s a space station.

I noticed that a while back when it was first announced. I feel like scaling has been one of the biggest problems with the Star Wars art in the Marvel comics so far.

Granted though comics generally take liberties with scaling all the time. It’s called stylization.

It’s one thing for something to be stylized, look at Vader #1 or the Lando Series with the backgrounds and design of the characters but it’s totally another thing for a regular blaster rifle to be the size of a rocket launcher. It’s poor attention to detail. If you look at one of the covers of the previous Vader series, there is one where Vaders lower body looks like it was squished through a trash compactor and didn’t match his upper body at all.

Eh, it could just be representing a different mission that she was going on, which required da heavy weaponz. But, yeah, artistic license.

Hopefully these comics lead into a bigger role in The Last Jedi. It may bring back my attention.

So Phasma’s cloak can deflect/absorb a blaster bolt?

If true that’s interesting and I would think we could see that used to some effect in TLJ.

If you remove her from the movie, nothing would change. The mark of a good character is one to which they are so vital to the plot, that removing them alters something about it. It is why Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Leia are memorable. Remove any of them, and ANH wouldn’t be ANH.

Even though I found Rey, Finn and Poe developed poorly, they still played a role in the movie. Phasma could have been a wonderful character had she gotten the development necessary. I mean she is a captain and was Finn’s arch-rival. Yet, she was used as a punchline for a joke. A joke!

If there is ONE positive thing I can say, is that Phasma is such a blank slate of a character that this comic and the upcoming book could do her some good. Much like Darth Maul with Legends, TCW and beyond(overrated as I think he is. Cool Design, though).

I was hoping that Han was just being his usual wiseass self and she never was actually in the compactor or that her armor would at least get dented ala The Shredder in TMNT II.

But it’s pretty hard to look cool after reeking of bodily fluids and God knows what else is in there after getting your ass handed to you by a senior citizen and a janitor with no combat experience.

    • June 16, 2017 at 3:26 am
      Permalink

She should be demoted at the least.

      • June 17, 2017 at 11:20 pm
        Permalink

Yup. I hope we see some consequences associated with her. I mean, I know people who love TFA and thought Phasma was under-served. Unless, they are the apologists who say the marketing is to blame. Give me a break. Dark Maul, dull as he was in TPM, at least accomplished something to the main plot by killing Qi-gon and Bobba Fett tracked Han/ fired one shot.

She barely used her weapon. Heck, if Phasma had been the one to fight and best Finn, okay, but really she barely did anything. And I hate saying this because it wasn’t like this movie hired a nobody. They got Gwendolyn Christie. I have never seen GoT, but I know that is an insanely popular show. And If were her(much like Oscar Isaac), I’d be really disappointed.

So yeah, my hope is that this comic, book and TLJ can shed some light on Phasma. Because, concept wise; she is cool in that she is Finn’s paired enemy. And TFA by all accounts made her into a joke.

The art looks promising. Hoping the story will be worth a reading. Marvel needs to hire real writers again! So far SW comics have barely tolerable writing at best.

Looks good, so far. For granted, I have no gauge as Phasma was as compelling as a stale piece of bread. But fingers crossed for this, the upcoming book and TLJ. Also, Kelly Thompson is a good choice. I really did enjoy that annual that she wrote. And the art looks amazing too. So yeah, I’ll be picking this up.
