Those vehicles are so weird! I’m not saying it in a negative way… Who knows, let’s see! I hope they erase the wheels.

Wow… that one vehicle. The one that sort of looks like a car from the 50s. It weirdly works for me. Feels sort of like what they would have designed back in the 70s about what they would have thought future/sci-fi might look like.

This is all completely ruined by the poofiness of his hair! 😛

Love Alden acting skills and his charisma, and this project of course. Maybe I am too much perfectionist but to make an actor younger its important the constitution. Its just a photo but probably Alden is too fat to represent a younger Solo? I will not judge the final result with a photo. I will wait and see the movie with excitement. Don’t like the hair too :p but the vehicles look so so great.

        :p Exactly.
in fact, this really doesn’t bother me so much. Lots of kids and young people are fat in their adolescence and when they grow they become thin. Just surprised me that photo because in my mind i have a thinner Solo (at least in ANH). I really trust in Alden’s acting. He is really good. In “Hail Caesar!” he really stole the entire show.

I know people are saying that he needn’t look like Han, just have the essence of the character without doing an impersonation.

Imo, if he looks nothing like Han AND acts nothing like Han, not sure what else I can suspend my disbelief on.

Obviously, that may all change once we see him in motion. Still would have preferred someone who looks more like Harrison Ford, seeing how in Rogue One they went to great lengths to have Mon Mothma look like the ROTJ portrayal, and even went to the length of recreating Leia and Tarkin in cgi.

On the surface, it makes little sense why young Han does NOT follow that pattern of their own defined continuity in a film which is clearly not a reboot and meant to fit in within the framework of the other movies.

But, I am willing to eat my hat on this, so let’s see how it all unfolds.

I understand people wanting a young Han Solo to look very similar to Harrison Ford, and in an ideal world I agree that that would be great. But the reality is that LFL is working in the real world to make these movies and there is no doppleganger of HF that is 50 years younger. Given that, I can’t really be harsh on LFL for choosing an actor they feel is the best overall fit, all things considered. I had never heard of Alden before he was cast for this movie and am not familiar with his prior work at all. I’m keeping as open a mind as possible for his portrayal of Han until I see it in the theater.

Not everyone is saying that. Star wars webs are saying that. 1/4 people are saying that. My opinion is that I will never see this guy as Han Solo 6 years younger than his ANH version, thus I won´t be in cinema to watch this movie 🙂 I hope this movie will not be a success and that Disney will try harder in picking stories or actors….

Totally! Ford was 6’1″ when he did the first Star Wars (I think he’s shrunk a bit in his advanced age). Alden is only 5’9″ – that’s a difference of 4″ and not insignificant. For comparison – Mark Hamill was also 5’9″ in the original Star Wars, and the height difference between him and Ford is very noticeable. I don’t know how Lord and Miller are going to account for this – maybe put him in platform shoes or stand on a box Tom Cruise style?

Alden 28 Ford 33. Never seen anyone in my life who had changed significantly between 20 and 30. THe face was always there. ANH Han Solo was 30 y.o. Alden is 1/2 feet shorter then Ford and his face in the slightest doesn´t resemble Ford….not mention that 3/4 of fans through the internet prefer Obi-Wan movie, old Republic movie or anythng els than Han Solo origin.

Surgery – Han suffered a terrible accident and required extensive bacta treatment and reconstructive surgery. The side-effect to the amount of bacta treatment was he grew in height.

Not sure on the fact that 3/4 of fans don’t want a Solo film, it doesn’t seem that way. Plus non-Star Wars fans, the more casual filmgoer would identify with Han Solo way more than any other film, even a Kenobi film.

I like the military / industrial look of the vehicles. Will help give the film the “lived in” look of the OT, rather than the overly polished look of the PT.

I think understand now, it seems like LF (since Disney) have the new rule that vehicles and ships design must be ugly or copied from another classic design.

I believe this is of course in purpose, in this movie, maybe in that system all stuff looks like that, and we will see other kind of vehicles too.

The one that I find a bit interesting is the batmobile-like, I see potential but still a bit uggly.

    • May 19, 2017 at 8:05 pm
      Permalink

I dunno, I think LFL has had their design issues for quite awhile.

I still cringe when I see those ridiculous Jedi starfighter designs from ROTS, for example. Those things have always looked like ass to me, and IMHO they make no sense whatsoever from a functional design standpoint. But there we are.

I’ll admit, though, I’m not over the moon about these vehicle designs we’re seeing here for the upcoming Non-Solo flick. I get that the wheels are probably intended to be CGI’ed out during post-production, but they still look a bit wonky, IMHO.

The banged-up, lived-in look, though… that was one of the signature “looks” of Star Wars going right back to the beginning. I’m glad to see that they’ve gotten back to it.

      • May 19, 2017 at 8:51 pm
        Permalink

I have the impression that they are missundertanding a little the concept, as if they have 3 basic rules for design “rusty”, “square” and “must look like the OT” and they get lost there, they are limited in some way.

I think the design for the jedi starfighters in ROTS is beautifull, the Eta-2, is one of the best designs IMO, and I can see that this design eventually may evolve in to a TIE fighter, or at least the designs are related in a very close way.

With this in mind, for me, I find really cool the idea of having the Tie-striker from RO being a mix between the Tie-fighter and the Eta-2, you can see the similarities in the shape, I think it was a missed oportunity to connect even more the styles. I find the striker design very lazy, one of the laziest designs in my opinion, just an enlarged Tie-fighter cockpit with no effort in make it a bit variation, just a bit , because of the different length, I dont know.

Anyway, I hope we will see some interenting designs in the new movies comming.

      • May 19, 2017 at 10:32 pm
        Permalink

Star Wars (both PT and OT) has always been filled with vehicles that make little to no sense from a functional design standpoint. The main criteria has always been the coolness factor. Look at the TIE fighter. Pilot has no visibility except for what’s directly in front of him, and are we supposed to believe those “solar panel” wings provide any significant power? Maybe if there’s a water heater on board. But it looks bad ass. How about the Imperial Shuttle from ROTJ? It looks regal and elegant and I’ve always loved it, but what purpose do those giant folding wings and huge dorsal fin serve on a SPACE craft? The “it flies through the atmosphere too” argument doesn’t hold water because we’ve seen ships like the Falcon and even freakin’ Star Destroyers fly in atmospheres without wings. It’s just for looks – pure and simple. And perhaps the biggest offender (and also one of my all time favorites) is the Walkers. So they have hovering vehicle technology – but instead of building a giant hover-tank/troop carrier that can truly be “all terrain” and go anywhere, the Empire decides to build giant walking dinosaurs that my grandma can outrun in her wheelchair? And they also appear to get tripped up fairly easily. But that whole Hoth sequence in Empire was AMAZING and they looked cool as hell.

Anyway, I think Star Wars is the wrong franchise to get hung up on scientific/engineering feasibility. It’s more fantasy than science fiction. I don’t like every design we’ve seen in the movies, but I can’t use the argument of “it makes no sense” as a reason. Otherwise, I’d be a hypocrite because most if not all of the designs that I do love are also illogical.
